One of the leading jewellery outlets operating in Tamil Nadu with branches across the country alone has evaded central excise duty to the tune of Rs 40 crore and immediately after the raids, it paid duty of Rs 12 crore. If banks themselves on which we bank so much indulge in this sort of a dirty game, can anyone bank upon banks to protect their savings without misuse. While majority of the bank men have strained themselves beyond the call of duty to serve the public in their most difficult times after demonetisation, there are a few banks and their branches that have brought disrepute to the banking system. How are they going to regain the confidence of the people and the government. This is like police aiding and siding the thief. Is it not shameful? Very severe action needs to be taken against the guilty and the public's faith in banking system restored.
Thousands of bank accounts in different parts of the country have come under the scanner of the enforcement agencies like the Income-Tax Department, Enforcement Directorate and the CBI for suspicious transactions after November 8. Shell company accounts with Noida and Kashmere Gate branches of Axis Bank are being investigated for alleged illegal exchange of demonetised notes. A significant part of the funds were used to purchase gold. A few days ago, the ED arrested a manager of Kotak Mahindra Bank’s Kasturba Gandhi Marg branch here for allegedly helping a lawyer Rohit Tandon recycle ₹38 crore.

Our country is rich with stories and anecdotes from Puranas, mythologies, Epics such as Ramayana and Mahabharatha, besides stories from Panchathanthra, Vikramadithya, Tenaliraman, Birbal and so on. Which child will not be fascinated by the stories of lord Krishna? With the grand mother fondling the child at bed time and telling stories which have great entertaining as well as moral values had a telling effect on the child. It is unfortunate that such things have become a thing of the past today. The homely and fond way of story telling which helps to establish a bond between the grandmothers and the children has given way to murderous TV serials and cine shows that brainwash children to violence, hatred and sex. So something should be done to revive the forgotten art of story telling to children and this will go a long way in helping character and personality development of the child. But how many of our grandmothers who are glued to the TV are ready for this today? A revival of this art of story telling will go a long way in instilling good virtues and qualities in our children. This can be a good beginning for this new year.

We as a nation do not think in terms of occupational hazards and how to overcome them to provide safety for the workers and others involved. Today in our country, construction activity is going on in a big way and except for a few bigwigs in the construction sector, all other construction companies do not seem to consider safety of workers as an issue at all. Every other day, we find workers in the building industry getting killed accidentally because of a fall from a height while constructing , plastering or painting and occasionally objects falling on their heads or because of poor design or construction using substandard materials or poor cement mix. The buildings under construction encroach on the road space also with the result that even pedestrians walking on the road side near a construction site are not spared. The entire road space at times is dumped with building materials, obstructing free flow of movement of people in the area. In Western countries such things can never happen. It looks as though human life is very cheap. Most of us have experienced such problems in India and have learnt the art of living with them. There is a great need to create awareness on the part of the builders to prevent these hazards in future.

Some thing unpalatable which the youngsters of today may not agree with:

Are we in dire need of pizzas and burgers, Pepsis and cokes, KFCs and McDonald's?

Don't we have enough varities of our own chaats, snacks and a host of eatables,

dishes and drinks completely native, healthy and quite tasty to suit our taste buds?

If only we try to improve the presentation, hygiene and marketing of these Indian varieties throughout the world, for which there seems to be a growing craze among foreigners, this can effectively deter our youngsters from falling a prey to every thing western, even in such matters as food, at the cost of our own food.

The service charges and service taxes are sheer nonsense imposed on a silent public by idiotic and stupid economists to extract and exploit them. The charges that you pay for your food in a hotel or restaurant INCLUDE the cost of the ingredients that go in the preparation of the item, the labour cost, the energy cost, the proportionately shared cost of the capital invested in building, furniture and vessels and the service provided, including the cost of labour and cost of supply. But why the heck this bloody boorish service charge? Fooling people. Service tax is another thing that fools people. The cost of everything is worked out based on the total cost that goes into the system until it reaches the consumer. Then why this idiotic nonsense of service taxes. At this rate students should pay service tax because education is a service, patients should pay service tax, because treatment is a service, all politicians should be taxed, because they all claim to serve the nation and so on. Similarly sales tax. What is that bloody sales tax? We buyers pay sales tax. Is it not silly at the outset? It should be paid by the sellers from the profit that they make out of selling products. So we are being continuously being fooled by the economists and the government. Economists are stupid people who exploit the silence of the vast majority. Following this stupidity, hereafter every shop may charge service tax for the item we purchase, because the shop owner takes the trouble of giving you the item that you want. You use the highways and all other infrastructural facilities for which in addition to the toll or the tax that you pay, you will be levied service tax. Those who vote during elections should pay election service tax and so on. That these sort of taxes are levied in advanced nations does not cover up the stupidity of these taxes. No sensible fellow in the top seems to have raised objection to these things so far. Tomorrow at this rate, you may be asked to pay living tax, breathing tax and laughing tax and so on.there is no limit to this stupidity until people remain stupid.

( I know that the Harwardians and other great and eminent economists will recommend me to be put in a mental assylum, but I don't know whether I may have to pay service tax for that also.)

These people who support such acts of boys, fail to think for a moment what would have been their reaction had the victim been one of their daughters or sisters. In one TV talkshow I saw a lady saying that she restricts the movement of her daughter, but doesn't bother about the promiscuity of her son, because he is a male! When are our people going to reform themselves and come out of the darkness in which they are engulfed?

Human sacrifice has been a part of certain religious functions in good or bad old days. But unfortunately this is what is happening on the eve of every new year, some sacrificing their lives for no worthwhile purposes. It is foolish and is beyond my comprehension to know why there should be such a midnight revelry on the English New Year. No other new year in our country is celebrated the way the English new year is celebrated. The worst part of it is that the Hindu temples that are in way connected with this new year are keeping their temples open and perform Ardhajama (midnight) Poojas much against the Agama Sastras followed. For some reason, it was started some years back when we were under the British to divert people who were in the habit of going and seeing their British bosses at midnight on the New year eve to give presents to them and be in their good books and it is continued as a revelry today that lacks chivalry. I have nothing against the celebrations but am against the way it is done, drinking, dancing, creating traffic hazards and jams, drunken driving, over speeding and so on creating law and order problem. This should be curbed at any cost. When there are people raising their voices in favour of Tamil and Indian traditions, no leader of any party, political or social, seems to condemn this sort of hooliganism on the New Year Day in the name of celebration.

It is time for us to realise that no other country in the world as large as India with such diverse cultures, languages, religions and geographical features exists in today's world under a democratic set up. Unity in diversity is our strength. Tolerance is our strength. Democracy is our strength. Let us be proud of it. Let us not compare ourselves with other countries such as China or America. Let us not turn our strength into weakness by comparing and copying some other country in the world. Generally in our traditional households, the women of the house eat last. It is more a matter of tradition than poverty. In the case of the poor, what the author says is valid and because of this habit, the women are left with whatever is left after all others in the house have dined and this invariably leads to undernutrition and malnutrition, such ladies suffering from anaemia and other health deficiency problems, resulting in a large number of deaths associated with pregnancy and child births. But in the case of well to do families, it is not the case. There is enough and more food left even after everyone has taken their grub and invariably the lady of the house who eats last has some surplus left which is usually given to the servant maids and servants of the house or to the road side beggar who begs for alms. At times, in their anxiety not to waste food, some ladies used to consume more, causing problems associated with overeating. Ladies of the house in the olden days never used to sit with their men and children and dine which was considered a taboo. But those days are over and today no one has time even to eat, not to speak of eating together and are in a great hurry to go to the offices. The only time they meet and eat is in the night and there again it is invariably the food prepared days back , kept in the fridge, which is microwaved and taken. This is in no way healthy but today we are left with no other alternative. The fridge and the microwave which are the kitchen aids today are responsible for many health problems and there is nothing like eating fresh food daily. But this an impracticable suggestion to day and if one wants a healthy food, one has to be wedded to the kitchen all the time and with one salary, the family has to manage, which again will mean problems of food scarcity, mal and under nutrition and will take us no where. Only in joint families, this is possible and not in nuclear families. But whatever said and done the fridge and the microwave which have entered the kitchen as our aids are causing more health problems than they solve and healthy food has become a thing of the fast when these two "aids" were not there, whether the entire family eats together or not. Eating together saves electricity and energy besides providing a 'family atmosphere of love and affection" which one cannot get by any other substitutes.

We have either experienced or heard of tenant- landlord relationship, which is usually a two way affair. The harassment meted out to the tenant by the house owner has become something proverbial and based on my own personal experience I wrote my first Tamil drama வீடும் பாடும் ( house hunt) which was staged in Mumbai . There I have explained the many ordeals which a person has to undergo in getting a house or a portion of a house ( when there were no flats) for rent especially when one is a bachelor. Even for a married person, it was no cake walk. Just as Seetha had to go through fire to prove her chastity, these house hunters have to go through several tests and inconvenient questions. About the treatment given to them, once they become tenants, the less said the better. They are the modern slaves of the 21st century. I thought I know all the problems faced by the tenants by cantankerous landlords, but the one given here in this news is really a news indeed. Every Time the tenant flushes the toilet, he has to pay charges for it. On asking , the owner said that the government had made an attempt to conserve water and so he was taking the required steps. An extraordinary way of conserving water! The user also stated that he pays his water bill regularly and it would be unfair for the owner to charge him if it is going to the government. Fortunately, the owner has not locked the toilets for use of the same without his permission.The owner has thus converted a domestic toilet as a "pay and use toilet" , fortunately without fixing a ceiling for its use. Weird are the ways of landlords.

A PIL urged the court to inquire into the "mushrooming of illegal businesses" of marriage brokers and marriage service providers. It also contended that advertisements on matrimonial websites seeking dowry were directly violating the provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act and sought orders to the state government to regulate the functioning of such websites.




The court has directed all the states to implement the above order on dowry. So far as I know, this order is there on statutes and on paper safe, for long with very few people honouring it. The practice that was originally prevalent among Hindus only today has become common among the Indian Christians and Muslims too. I do not know whether it is prevalent among other religionists such as Buddhistts, Sikhs, Jains and so on. While these religionists have broken away from their parent religion, I am cock sure that this dowry habit will be followed in all its sincerity and seriousness by most of them. This practice is prevalent even among certain tribal sections. It is very difficult to define the term dowry. Only in case a complaint is lodged, action can be taken. When and where there are no complaints, what action could be taken and how? We don't have an answer. What is willingly given can be termed as a gift or a present. Those who oppose dowry at the time of their daughter's marriage are in favour of dowry when it comes to their son's marriage. Dowry among poor families is one of the causes of female faeticide. Among the middle class people, it is a give and take affair for those who are endowed with equal number of male and female children. The less fortunate are those who fight dowry tooth and nail. Unless the concept of dowry is extinguished from the minds of people, it will find its ways into the system in different names. The concept cannot easily be removed from tainted minds by law alone. The conscience of the individuals must be awake, but the temptation in many cases seems to suppress their conscience.

When it comes to marriage brokers and marriage services, how is the government going to regulate it? Will there be a separate diploma or degree course for that, qualifying which, people become eligible for providing marriage services?

Action can be taken on open advertisements, but that alone cannot stop the dowry evil. Without ads, it can survive through word of mouth. Severest punishment in proved cases where the aggrieved has complained for relief, can help to do away with this evil to some extent. Accepting dowry should become a social stigma and until this happens, this problem will be very evasive. Most of the evils about which we complain, we are only responsible. No use expecting the government to do everything.

Fungus is normally associated with diseases and now again it is associated with diseases in a different way. That which was considered unsafe is no more so. SOME of the fungi can cure diseases

DRDO’s Defence Institute of Bio-Energy Research at Nainital has developed capsules out of fungus, which is grown on the insects at high altitude of the Himalayas. These drugs are used for curing TB, bronchitis, asthama, hepatitis and other ailments. It contains cordycepin, which has aphrodisiac value ( performance enhancing values) too.

Incidentally, Chinese soldiers often used to cross over to India for this fungus, which they call ‘love flower’. A kilogram of fungus costs around Rs 8 lakh to Rs 10 lakh.

The mushroom, it seems, when eaten, strengthens the immune system and promotes overall vitality and longevity. The fungus had caught the attention of the world in 1993, when Chinese women athletes, who have been using it, shattered nine world records in outdoor track field championship in Germany.

So some fungi can shatter records, not health.
