Namaskaarams to all..!!

The doubts i have are :

1. please explain me the concept of **kula dheivam**, inspite of worshipping other roopams?
2. How was it chosen? (Based on what..?)

The reason i ask is, i want to know & share the basic knowledge for my son about these. Anyhow, he is just 1 year old, and he will be starting to ask questions very soon, & I must be ready for that. :)

Please help & clarify.
