The residents of a remote village in neighbouring Kaushambi district, it seems, have gone a bit too far in their adulation of Narendra Modi. In fact, they have dedicated a temple to him -- complete with a statue and 'Modi Chalisa'. Villagers from Bhagwanpur have begun to worship the BJP prime ministerial candidate as a deity and address him as 'Swami' Narendra Modi. The ancient Shiva temple where Modi's statue is installed is now called 'NaMo NaMo Mandir'.

The 'devotees' offer daily prayers to the deity and also recite a 'Modi Chalisa' besides lighting a lamp which they say will be lit continuously for 125 days with the wish that Modi becomes the prime minister of the country. Not surprisingly, the move, led by the temple priest, has its share of critics, with some considering it as a stunt by those affiliated to the BJP. However, unfazed by what others say, 49-year-old priest Brijendra Narayan Mishra believes "worshipping Modi will result in a better future for the country".

"Modi alone has the potential to bring stability, security and prosperity to the nation and worshipping his statute is my style of patriotism," he said. "Har koi desh ke liye kuch na kuch kar raha hai to hamne socha ki desh ko Modiji jaise neta ki zarurat hai, to hum unke liye ishwariye shakti pradan karne ka prayas kyun na karen (Everyone is contributing on his part for the betterment of the country and we need a leader like Modi. So I thought I would do this and others followed)," said Mishra while talking to TOI.

"We are not doing this for personal propaganda as we are of the view that if Modi becomes the prime minister, we will have a better future," he said. The 'NaMo, NaMo Mandir' is becoming popular among the masses and people from nearby villages are coming here to catch a glimpse of it.

This practice may very well be the explanation of how we have so many gods, temples and legends in our sanathana dharma...

i dont know about sanatana dharma.

but it is the tradition among tamils since ancient times to raise a temple for anyone who died for a worthy cause or for the sake of the society. we have the history of madurai veeran for example.

and the villages are strewn with temples for women who died saving children from an abusive husband etc.these eventually evolve into ammans. there is temple for kannagi too among others.

these are not vedic pantheons, though there is an effort to absorb them into mainstream hinduism through two methods - takeover by HRCE (mundankanni amman koil in mylapore) and introduction of brahmin priests, replacing the poosaris (mundankanni amman, thiruverkadu mariamman).

personally, i would rather visit a village temple with a poosari, as the prayers come from the heart, no format and overall informality with anyone allowed to enter the sanctum sanctorum. i think, barring the brahmin priests, no one else is allowed into the praharams of the major temples of tamil nadu....

I dont know if only village poosaris pray from the heart.

There is so much murk around each and everything that it is better to say a silent prayer, if at all we believe in prayer, wherever we are.

in Facebook, Badri Seshadri is giving a day by day account of his 10 day visit to Gujarat - no not to evaluate modi but to visit the historic places. but invariably modi always turns up in any conversation.

here is today's report and even more interesting, the comments... telling about how various folks view modi and guj of today :)

Except for the power situation, Gujarat has a long way to go to catch up with TN.

Puthurajan Sritharan So, you don't know much about the present in Guj! We Sivakasi people do business with all states. To me Gujarat has developed much than any other state.

Puthurajan Sritharan It is not development in TN. It is swelling. Which industry shall flourish without power? I mean, power should be made available to small or big industries. Good durable roads are must. Show me a road in TN.

Thirumalai Sa What other indicators did you observe? Did you visit any Govt. office for any transaction? Did you check any village for drinking water? Schools? Roads may not be like Chennai but it should be compared across the state. Again Chennai alone is not TN

Poovannan Ganapathy It has a long way to catch up with TN in gender sex ratio.its 995-1000 in TN while its 918-1000 in gujarat.Gujarat has lost more than 2 lakhs of girls between 2001 and 2011 census by minimal
It has a long way to catch up with TN in education and the seats in government engg, medical, arts and science colleges in TN is miles ahead of gujarat.Even in pvt sector the seats are several times higher in TN.
Its miles to go before gujarat can reach the percentage of educational seats/ jobs women corner in TN and families which had opted for family planning with only girl children
Gujarat is among the last when it comes to number of people working in central govt, armed forces, paramilitary forces, scientific establishments, artists and TN has a share greater than its proportion in the indian population.
The hindu muslim divide is stark in gujarat and gujarat is totally dependant on other states to work as nurses, teachers, doctors, engrs in gujarat.

Tiruchendurai Ramamurthy Sankar On the converse, if this is generally considered a developed state of affairs, what would have been Gujarat after 50 years of congress rule.

Honestly, are we going to give credit to the Dravidian parties for the alleged better state of affairs in TN? Or is it that we shunned congress a good 46 years back and that could be cited as one if the reasons for the development?

these malnutrition, sex ratio are for board room discussions...not for the common man who looks for simple amenities, clean and transparent administration.

I think with uninterrupted power supply that was achieved in 2009-2010 the benefits could be seen in the next 10 years, in industry and infrastructure.

Ramiah Ariya The reason TN has been better off is because of several policies taken across multiple governments. One is the mid-day meal scheme. Second was the drive for literacy. A third was (surprisingly) the early occurence of AIDS in the state. It made the state focus a lot on healthcare. In reality, TN is very weak in natural resources, and has used successful welfare policies to stay ahead.

Ramiah Ariya Even in power, TN uses renewable energy sources far more than Gujarat - it generates 3 times as much wind power as Gujarat. Gujarat's famed solar generators are actually very weak in terms of production. Their overall share of renewable is far lower than TN
4 hours ago · Like

Ramiah Ariya Similarly T&D losses in TN are far lower than Gujarat. Gujarat, as far as I know, has around 24% loss due to T&D
4 hours ago · Like

Ramiah Ariya The two states offer a big contrast in approaches. TN invests in welfare policies largely and hopes that development would follow. Gujarat - the approach is to rely on offering huge sops to industry and thus create development in a short timeframe, without the corresponding social investments.
