Not religion, the Markaz crisis is about health, and irresponsibility

The Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi during the month of March is in the news for all the wrong reasons. Out of the total number of coronavirus positive cases in the country, nearly one-fifth coronavirus positive cases have been linked to the Tablighi Jamaat congregation . Also, of all the 56 countrywide deaths, 15 were those who had attended the congregation held last month. This has led to widespread negative media coverage against the body which organised the meet and the sect leader Maulana Saad. The facts that have emerged so far point towards the fact that after the Delhi government notification regarding ban on meetings beyond a limit, the Jamat leadership failed to recognise the urgency of the directives related to the prevention of the coronavirus spread. That the infection spread among the participants is a fact. That 15-odd innocent people lost their lives due to the virus is a sad reality. In this situation, it is the government’s utmost duty and responsibility to ensure that all people who attended the meet are tested for the deadly Sars-CoV-2 pathogen and quarantined. The action to sanitise the place of meeting and the campus was urgently required to save everyone from the effects of the deadly virus.

Today, we as a country are up against a deadly virus which has not only disrupted our daily lives but has also brought infinite misery to the most vulnerable sections of the population by depriving them of their means of livelihood. In these pressing times, it is the duty of every citizen to strictly follow the guidelines issued by governments to stop the spread of this deadly virus. Every instruction issued by the authorities has to be adhered to, whether we like it or not. But there are a few who choose to ignore the directives or do not take them seriously. Some temples located across the country had a few thousands devotees even on March 18-19, as per media reports. Fortunately, for them, there have been no reports of the virus spreading at these congregations. But the Tablighi congregation organisers were not that fortunate. They certainly owe the responsibility of not adhering to the guidelines issued. Like the mosque in Malaysia, which became the epicentre of coronavirus cases in that country and had to be closed immediately.

While a country-wide impact of this episode is very difficult to ascertain at this moment, it is also unfortunate that a section of media and public has viewed the crisis through the prism of Hindu-Muslim divide. Instead of communalising the crisis, joint and concerted efforts are urgently required to control further transmission of the virus in the community and beyond. It is in this connection that Muslim leaders and the Ulema need to play a vital role. That a large number of attendees of Ijtima at Markaz have disappeared or have remained untraceable, further burdening the government machinery, is despicable. But at the same time, the effort by some TV channels to present the issue as “Corona Jihad” or “bio-jihad”, as it was called, is also shameful. This is undoubtedly a medical emergency, arising out of the irresponsible attitude of the Markaz authorities who, instead of cancelling the event, went ahead with the programme. The Markaz authorities have come out with an explanation that they had approached the Delhi Police and other officers for the evacuation of people from the centre but there was no positive response from them.

However, instead of holding each other responsible for the emergent situation that originated from the Markaz, it is urgently required to nip the crisis in the bud. This would not be possible without the active support of the Muslim community. The identification process of infected people needs to be completed urgently with the help of the community. These infected people should not be allowed to hide in the community as it could prove disastrous for the whole nation. Similarly, saner people on both sides of the divide should effectively launch an exercise to keep the issue within the realm of medical emergency and not turn it into a communal imbroglio.

After flouting quarantine norms, Tablighi Jamaat attendees refuse COVID-19 test

New Delhi/IBNS: Even as the Centre and the state governments across India are trying to trace the remaining Tablighi Jamaat attendees in order to arrest the further rise of coronavirus cases in the country that shot up after several of them tested positive, media reports said many attendees quarantined in a Delhi hospital are objecting to the required medical testing.

A Times Now report said the quarantined attendees posed threats to the wellbeing of the hospital staff and the security personnel by refusing social distancing, sneezing and spitting all around the hospital premises. On Thursday, reports said, many of them are resisting against being tested for COVID-19.

At a time the idea of social distancing was embraced both by the Centre and the state governments, Tablighi Jamaat, an "orthodox" missionary, congregated around 3,000 people at Alami Markaz Banglewali Masjid in Nizamuddin here flouting all norms of self-isolation.

Tablighi Jamaat Members Misbehave With Medical Staff In Kanpur, Prompt Hospital To Remove Female Staff: Report

Some Tablighi Jamaat members who were admitted to Lala Lajpat Rai Hospital in Uttar Pradesh (UP)’s Kanpur allegedly refused to take medication while also misbehaving with doctors and nurses, India Today reported.

The hospital administration, following the alleged act by the Jamaatis, had to call off the female staff members from the ward they were in, said an official on Saturday (4 April).

According to chief medical officer Ashok Shukla, six out of 22 Jamaat members had been tested positive with Covid-19. All 22 people were admitted on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

Aarti Lalchandani, a senior doctor at the hospital, said, "Our team is engaged in providing healthcare services to those admitted here. They were told not to spit in the hospital, but they refuse to accept our instructions. They spit on their hands and then touch staircase railings. They also misbehaved with the doctors."

They are also demanding non-vegetarian food and refusing to eat rice, dal, and paneer given to them. They also demand good clothes and better facilities.

"However, with police intervention, the situation has now come under control," she said.

UP govt books Tablighi Jamaat members under National Security Act for obscene behaviour in hospital

It is learnt that it has also been decided that female nurses and female police women will not be deployed where the Tablighi Jamaat members are kept.

In a major move, the Yogi Adityanath government has booked a few quarantined Tablighi Jamaat members, who misbehaved with the female nursing staff in a hospital in Ghaziabad, under the National Security Act (NSA).

According to reports, the chief minister has invoked NSA against six persons for the shocking acts.

Describing them as “enemies of humanity”, Adityanath said, “They will not follow the law, nor will they accept order. They are the enemies of humanity, what they have done with women healthcare providers is a heinous crime. We are invoking the National Security Act against them, we will not spare them.”

“An incident like Indore where doctors were attacked should not be seen anywhere in the state. For this, we will take whatever action is required by law,” he said.

It is learnt that it has also been decided that female nurses and female police women will not be deployed where the Tablighi Jamaat members have been quarantined.

This comes as the Chief Medical Officer of the MMG Hospital in Ghaziabad had written a letter to the Ghaziabad police informing about the ‘criminal behavior of the Jamaatis’.

The CMO, in his letter, stated that the members of the Tablighi Jamaat who are kept at the isolation ward of the hospital, have been roaming in their wards naked. The letter stated that obscene comments and songs were being heard from the ward, and inmates were asking for beedi-cigarette from the staff of the hospital. The CMO also wrote that these people have also been making lewd gestures towards female employees of the hospital.

Following this, a case for obscene behaviour, non-cooperation and other charges was filed against some inmates of the isolation ward for suspected coronavirus patients in the hospital.

According to the Ghaziabad SSP Kalanidi Naithani, as per a report in IANS, the case was filed at the Kotwali police station under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including Sections 354 (assault or criminal force on woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 294 (punishment for obscene acts) and 270 (malignant act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life).

The complaint also said that some Tablighi followers — who were rounded up and taken by bus to Ghaziabad on Tuesday and Wednesday for a medical check-up after they had been to the Markaz headquarters, said to be the new COVID-19 hotspot in the country, allegedly spat on police personnel and government officials.

The police have been instructed to collect evidence from the affected personnel and eye-witnesses at the hospital for their investigation.

A joint probe by Ghaziabad police chief and Additional District Magistrate was ordered following the complaints.

Tablighi Jamaat spreaders cause COVID-19 explosion in India

New Delhi (IANS): The Tablighi Jamaat connection to COVID-19 cases in India is exploding as these spreaders crisscross the country to reach their hometowns.

According to a Health Ministry update issued on Thursday evening, about 400 positive COVID-19 cases found across 10 states and Union Territories have links to the Tablighi Jamaat cluster in Nizamuddin.

The figures continue to spike as many more are testing positive. By night, between Tamil Nadu and Delhi, the cases are 264 and 124, respectively, showing the highest number of cases. In fact, all the nine deaths in Telangana have the Tablighi connection.

At 400 cases, one in every five cases in India has a Tablighi connection as of now and this ratio is likely to go up as the new cases detected on Thursday are primarily Tablighi-related.

On Thursday, in state after state, the trend is that almost all new cases are coming with a Markaz connection. The Tablighi connection has now become the single biggest source of the COVID-19 spread despite 130 crore [1.30 billion] people being under lockdown in India.

Before this outbreak happened in Nizamuddin, the spike in cases had mellowed and some commentators had even suggested that India may be better off than the other countries.

The number of cases has indeed seen an explosion after more than 2,000 people came out of the Nizamuddin Markaz, the headquarters of the Tablighi Jamaat in Delhi.

Lav Agarwal, the Joint Secretary in the Union Health Ministry, said that additional testing to identify new cases is in progress, as people from the Nizamuddin area have moved to several states across the country.

The official from the Health Ministry added that out of nearly 2,000 Tablighi Jamaat members in Delhi, 1,804 have been quarantined while 334 have been admitted to different hospitals.

“The doubling rate of covid-19 cases in India is currently 4.1 days. This is due to Tablighi Jamaat, the additional cases are being reported now. Had this event not taken place, the doubling rate would have been 7.4 days," said Lav Agarwal, joint secretary, health ministry, on Sunday.

Tablighis were comfortable to perform toilet functions in public view – book by Malaysian author reveals

Malaysian author Farish A. Noor in his book Islam on the Move reveals that the Tablighi Jamaatis who live in the markaz are so comfortable to perform their toilet functions like urinating and excreting in full view of others as the ‘shame about their bodies’ was eradicated. Excerpts shared by Delhi University Professor Abhinav Prakash on microblogging site Twitter revealed habits of the Tablighi Jamaatis while in the markaz.

Excerpt of the book Islam on the Move

Apparently, the design of Tablighi toilet at markaz provides an all-seeing view whatever is going on in the toilet area. This would enable the Tablighis to ‘monitor and correct’ the behaviour of their Tablighi brothers. Such urinating in full public view ensured that the Tablighis would urinate while squatting instead of standing up as sitting down is the ‘proper way’ to urinate as per Sunnah.

Open toilets also ensured ‘unwanted incidents’ like homosexual acts or masturbation do not take place inside the markaz. Homosexuality is condemned in Islam and masturbation is haraam in Islam. Hence, as per the author’s observations, since Tablighi Jamaatis are comfortable with excreting and urinating in public view, perhaps that is the reason they are running amok naked, as has been alleged.

Columnist and national security affairs analyst Divya Kumar Soti also shared on social media that the Sunnah, the social and legal custom in Islam, directs Muslims to spit to ward off satan (or the devil, who resides in toilets as stated above) when he tries to interfere in their religious practices.

Maulana Saad, the chief of Nizamuddin Markaz Tablighi Jamaat had told the attendees that coronavirus is a conspiracy. Hence, many of the attendees believe that the government is taking healthy Muslims and killing them. The government has prohibited large gatherings in religious places like temples and mosques and hence the ‘satan’ is prohibiting them from practicing their religious practice, i.e. offering namaaz in mosque. Hence, the ‘satan’ healthcare workers are at the receiving end of the wrath of Tablighi Jamaatis who are spitting on them.

The Nizamuddin Tablighi Jamaat, which was attended by thousands of Muslims from India and abroad last month, has emerged as a hotspot for coronavirus in India with maximum positive cases being traced to the markaz. After the attendees were taken to quarantine centre, reports had emerged that the attendees misbehaved with nurses, healthcare and sanitation workers, police and even excreted in the corridor.
