'I refuse to beg or prostitute myself': India's first transgender delivery agent

preethisha-1.jpg

Preethisha is on a high. After years of fighting social ostracism and refusing to confirm to stereotypical 'job roles' expected of transgenders, she is now finding her feet. An aspiring actress, Preethisha, a transwoman, recently joined a food delivery company to become the first transgender delivery agent.

Born male in a village in Tirunelveli, the journey has been tough for 31-year-old Preethisha. “I was around 14 when I began to realise I was different. I wanted to be a woman,” she says. The youngest of three children, Preethisha left home to explore and embrace her sexuality. During this time, she befriended transgender youngsters who helped her understand things better. This took her to Pune, where after saving up money from a few odd jobs and with assistance from the community, she underwent a sex change surgery at the young age of 15.

And then the problems started, she recalls. She was expected to return the money the community spent for her. “After I became a woman, those who helped me told me to beg on the streets, or get into prostitution.” “I refused; this was not why I had become a woman. I wanted to live with dignity, but they taunted me to stick to the 'parampara' (tradition)”. Preethisha clarifies she doesn't intend to degrade the community, and hopes things have changed more than a decade since. Though she ended up begging on the trains for a few weeks, it is from here she moved on to her first real act of self-reliance—selling key chains and mobile phone covers on the trains. “Other vendors, as well as the staff at the railway station were supportive.” This, however, didn't go down well with certain members of the community. After a stand-off with them, Preethisha headed to Delhi.

Poor plight of few schools in Taml Nadu

[h=1]Leaky roof, peeling walls, no fans: TN teacher starts online campaign for govt school[/h]

GovtSchool_Main_750.JPG

This is the only middle school in Kattumalaiyanur and requires immediate repairs to ensure the safety of the children.

The Panchayat Union Middle School in Kattumalaiyanur, located 15 kilometres from Thiruvannamalai, is a government-run middle school for Classes I to VIII and has a student strength of 169. Look at one of its classrooms and the imminent need for a face-lift becomes apparent. On a sweltering summer day, the children sit inside these classrooms with a fan that does not work, under a roof that needs fixing.

With peeling walls, broken windows and a leaking roof, this facility is the only middle school in the village that has minimal or no access to buses, autos and other forms of transportation that might take students to other schools. “For students taking up Class IX, it is a 7-kilometre walk or cycling to the nearest high school,” says Jayapriya, the school’s science teacher who has been working there since 2009.

missile.png

India has test-fired its indigenously developed Advanced Air Defence interceptor missile, capable of destroying any incoming ballistic missile.

Three successful tests of the missile were carried out last year. In the last test, conducted in December, an incoming ballistic missile target was successfully intercepted within 30 km altitude of the earth's atmosphere. The two other tests is 2017 were conducted in March and February.

The missile is being developed as part the Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) system, which can intercept medium-range ballistic missiles travelling at speeds of Mach 3 to 8. [h=1]TN cracks whip on home-birthing practice[/h]

baby-300x205.jpg

Chennai: Taking a serious view of reports about women going in for 'natural birthing' at home resulting in deaths, the Directorate of Public Health (DPH) has warned that only institutional delivery of babies was approved by the State government.

“Conducting home deliveries by watching YouTube videos or inspired by movies is not a wise thing to do. MBBS doctors, midwives and staff nurses registered under the Indian Nursing Council and village health nurses are qualified persons to conduct deliveries,” an advisory said.

It is to be noted that cases of young couples opting for home birthing is on the rise.

Yesterday, police in Madurai arrested an engineer, Kannan (29) for preventing health officials from attending to his wife who was in labour at home.

The couple were adamant about having their baby delivery at home after the hospital said she would have to undergo a Cesarean section (C Section).

The couple came home in active labour and even refused to cut the umbilical cord, instead waited for it to wither away.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Supreme Court is expected to hear a clutch of petitions on August 6, seeking the quashing of the controversial article 35A which grants special status to permanent residents of Jammu and Kashmir.

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday said that it was ready for a debate over the contentious Article 35A of the Constitution, which guarantees special status to permanent residents of Jammu and Kashmir. Saturday also witnessed protests across the state over the sensitive issue, while the separatists' groups called for a two-day shutdown in the state demanding that Article 35A should not be scrapped.

The remark from the saffron party came ahead of the crucial hearing in the Supreme Court, which will take up a bunch of petition challenging the provision in the Constitution on August 6. The apex court is expected to hear a clutch of petitions, seeking the quashing of the controversial article. Among the petitions is also a plea filed by an RSS-linked NGO 'We the Citizens'.

Meanwhile, speaking on the issue, J&K BJP chief spokesperson Sunil Sethi reportedly said, "The BJP is open to a debate with anyone or any political party on whether or not Article 35A is in the interest of the people of the state. We are extending an open invitation." He added that since the last few days, political tension in Jammu and Kashmir had intensified over Article 35A and said that certain political parties, especially the ones which are active in Kashmir, had taken an “anti-national and anti-people" stance over the issue.

[h=1]Tamil Nadu’s first government-trained non-Brahmin priest, and his God moment[/h]
05THPRIEST

Ringing in change: T.Marichamy doing puja at the Ayyappan temple at Madurai
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[h=2]Marichamy, a first non-Brahmin to come out of a state-run archaka training centre, is a happy man.[/h]It is 12 noon and the small Ayyappan temple in Tallakulam is closing. The bell tolls softly to signal the end of the annadhanam (free) lunch and people slowly walk out of the temple after eating a fulfilling meal. T. Marichamy, the temple priest, finishes off the last few archanais (personalised puja with chanting of the names of the deity, invoking the blessings).

He lights the lamp and offers some vibuthi (sacred ash) and kungumam(kumkum) to a family of four. Finally, he turns to the sanctum sanctorum where a statue of Lord Ayyappa is placed, and closes the wooden doors. After a puja-heavy six-hour shift, the priest catches his first break.

The scene could be from any of the thousands of temples that dot Tamil Nadu, but Mr. Marichamy is just not another priest: he is a non-Brahmin priesttrained under the Tamil Nadu government’s archakas (priest) training centres between 2007 and 2008, wherein 206 people across castes were trained for priesthood in major Shaivite and Vaishnavite temples. After the first batch graduated, the programme was shut down.

IIT-Madras powers up a desi chip

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Microprocessor developed by the institute’s computer scientists is fabricated by Intel

These are the kind of chips that India always wanted, but could not make. Now, computer scientists and a student team from the IIT- Madras have developed the first of a family of six industry-standard microprocessors.

The initial batch of 300 chips, named RISECREEK and produced under Project Shakti, have been fabricated free at Intel’s facility at Oregon, U.S., to run the Linux operating system.

The IIT team says its microprocessors can be adapted by others, as the design is open source. They optimise power use and compete with international units such as the Cortex A5 from Advanced RISC Machines (ARM).

On the test bench, the IIT design fared better than the A5, measured in terms of the DMIPS per megahertz rating, scoring 1.68 against the competition’s 1.57. At a frequency of 350 MHz, RISECREEK can meet the demands of defence and strategic equipment such as NAVIC (Indian Regional Navigation Satellite) and Internet of Things (IoT) electronics, its developers say. “Our process helps us develop the processor three times sooner than industry standards,” says Kamakoti Veezhinathan, Professor of Computer Science at the IIT- Madras, who led the project.

What makes RISECREEK different is the open source nature of the designs. “This is made in India, but even if it were made in the U.S., it would be contemporary,” says G.S. Madhusudan, project adviser from the IIT- Madras.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has fined a medical college Rs 2 crore for trying to deceive inspectors by projecting healthy people as patients as it dismissed a plea the institute had filed to reverse a decision the Medical Council of India had taken.

The MCI had decided not to renew permission for the Telangana-based Mahavir Institute of Medical Sciences to admit its third batch of 150 MBBS students for the academic year 2018-19.

"The petitioner is not entitled to any relief as... (it) does not meet the required standards for renewal of permission for admission to the third batch of MBBS students. We take serious note of the fraud played by the petitioner in projecting healthy persons as patients in their hospital for the purpose of showing compliance of the minimum standards," a bench of Justices S.A. [h=1]BEGGING NO LONGER ILLEGAL IN DELHI![/h]
In a landmark verdict delivered on Wednesday, the Delhi High Court decriminalised begging in the national Capital, saying the penal provisions of the Act were unconstitutional and deserved to be struck down.

The Bench also made it clear that the provisions of the Act which do not directly or indirectly criminalise begging or relate to the offence of begging are not required to be struck down and are maintained.

A Bench of acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar said the inevitable consequence of this decision would be that prosecution under the Bombay Prevention of Begging Act against people alleged to have committed the offence of begging would be liable to be struck down.

However, the court said the Delhi Government is at liberty to bring in alternative legislation to curb any racket of forced begging after undertaking an empirical examination on the sociological and economic aspect of the matter.

The Bench said the provision which treats begging as an offence or deals with ancillary issues like power of officers to deal with this offence, as extended to Delhi, “are unconstitutional and are struck down”. It would be pertinent to mention here that on May 16, the court had asked how begging could be an offence in a country where the Government was unable to provide food or jobs.

The High Court was considering two Public Interest Litigations (PILs) seeking to decriminalise begging. The Central Government had said there were sufficient checks and balances in the Bombay Prevention of Begging Act, which criminalises begging.

DigiLocker documents must be accepted by traffic police for driving licence

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The road transport ministry has asked state transport departments and traffic police not to insist on original (hard copy) documents like driving licence, registration certificate and insurance papers for verification.

The advisory was issued citing the provisions of Information Technology (IT) Act. It also said that any of these documents in “electronic form” authenticated through the DigiLocker or mParivahan apps of the government should be treated as valid.

This is in response to a number of grievances and RTI applications received in the ministry where citizens have raised the issue that the documents available in DigiLocker or the mParivahan app are not considered valid by the traffic police or the motor vehicles department, when asked to produce.
