ONLY ONE AND ALL–PERVADING SELF

Yesterday, a sadhu came and sat in the Hall. He seemed anxious to speak to Bhagavan, but hesitant. After some time, he approached him and said, “Swami, it is said that the Self (atma), is all-pervading. Does that mean that it is in a dead body also?”

“Oho! So that is what you want to know?” rejoined Bhagavan. “And did the question occur to the dead body or to you?”

“To me,” said the sadhu.

Bhagavan: “When you are asleep do you question whether you exist or not?
It is only after you wake up that you say you exist.
In the dream state also, the Self exists.

There is really no such thing as a dead or a living body. That which does not move we call dead, and that which has movement we call alive. In dreams you see any number of
bodies, living and dead, and they have no existence when you wake up.

In the same way this whole world, animate
and inanimate, is non-existent. Death means the dissolution of the ego, and birth means the rebirth of the ego.
There are births and deaths, but they are of the ego; not of you.
You exist whether the sense of ego is there or not.
You are its source, but not the ego-sense.

Deliverance (mukti) means finding the origin of these births and deaths and demolishing
the ego-sense to its very roots. That is deliverance. It means death with full awareness. If one dies thus, one is born again simultaneously and in the same place with Aham sphurana known as ‘Aham, Aham (I, I)’. One who is born thus, has no
doubts whatsoever.”

Yesterday evening, after the chanting of the Vedas, a young European who came four or five days ago, asked Bhagavan a number of questions.
Bhagavan, as usual, countered him with the question, “Who are you? Who is asking these questions?”
Unable to get any other elucidation,
the young man as a last resort asked Bhagavan which verse of the Gita he liked the most, and Bhagavan replied that he
liked them all. When the young man still persisted in asking which was the most important verse, Bhagavan told him,
Chapter X, Verse 20 which runs: “I am the Self, Oh Gudakesa1, seated in the heart of all beings. I am the beginning and the middle and the end of all beings.”

The questioner was pleased and satisfied and on taking leave, said, “Swami, this unreal self is obliged to travel owing
to the exigencies of work. I pray that you may be pleased to recommend that this unreal self be merged into the real Self.”

Bhagavan, smiling, replied, “Such a recommendation might be necessary where there are a number of different selves — one to ask for a recommendation, one to
recommend and one to hear the recommendation. But there are not so many selves.
There is only one Self.
Everything is in the one Self.”

I stayed at the Ashram of Shri Ramanna Maharishi at Tiruvannamalai in the last quarter of 2017. It was a very nice experience. Those who are interested may go for a short stay at the Ashram. Google to see their website and then send them a request mail. Boarding and lodging is free and any donation to the Asram is voluntary. I am planning a trip to the Ashram again in the first quarter of 2020. There is a library from where one can borrow books for reading or read at the library itself. Wholesome vegetarian food comprising breakfast, lunch and dinner is provided free of cost. Please do not try to book accommodation there during full moon day to circumbulate the sacred Tiruvannamalai Hill. This is strictly discouraged.

D.: Is there use in bringing America and India closer by bringing the intelligentsia of the two countries together, say, by exchange of professors, etc.?
Maharshi: Such events will take place automatically. There is a Power guiding the destinies of nations. These questions arise only when you have lost touch with Reality. Is America apart from you, or India apart? Get hold of it and see.

D.: If one is miles away in Europe and invokes your aid ....
Maharshi: Where is Europe? It is in you.

D.: I have come here; I would like Maharshi to come there. (Saying it, she laughed gently. Silence for some minutes).
Maharshi: You see the physical body and so you find limitations. Time and space operate on this plane. So long as you think of the gross body there will be differences found as different bodies. On the other hand, knowledge of the real Maharshi will set all doubts at rest. Are you in India now? Or is India in you? Even now this notion that you are in India must go. India is in you. In order to verify it, look to your sleep. Did you feel that you were in Europe or in India while asleep? You were nevertheless existing then the same as now.

D.: This does not answer the question. The planet has a future - what is it to be?
Maharshi: Time and space are functions of thoughts. If thoughts do not arise there will be no future or the Earth.
D.: Time and space will remain even if we do not think of them.
Maharshi: Do they come and tell you that they are? Do you feel them in your sleep?
D.: I was not conscious in my sleep.
Maharshi: And yet you were existing in your sleep.

After a few minutes one lady asked: “Do you ever intend to go to America?”
Maharshi: America is just where India is (i.e., in the plane of thought).

D.: In Europe it is not understood by the people that a man in solitude can be helpful. They imagine that men working in the world can alone be useful. When will this confusion cease? Will the European mind continue wading in the morass or will it realise the truth?
Maharshi: Never mind Europe or America. Where are they except in your mind? Realise your Self and then all is realised. If you dream and see several men, and then wake up and recall your dream, do you try to ascertain if the persons of your dream creation are also awake?

D.: America is now the foremost country in industrial matters, mechanical engineering, scientific advance and other worldly affairs. Will she come up to the same level in spiritual life also?
Maharshi: Certainly, she is bound to.
D.: Thank God that it will be so! I am a partner in an Engineering firm. But it is not of vital concern to me. I try to bring spiritual ideals into the work-a-day life of the firm.
Maharshi: That is good. If you surrender yourself to the Higher Power all is well. That Power sees your affairs through. Only so long as you think that you are the worker you are obliged to reap the fruits of your actions. If on the other hand, you surrender yourself and recognise your individual self as only a tool of the Higher Power, that Power will take over your affairs along with the fruits of actions. You are no longer affected by them and the work goes on unhampered. Whether you recognise the Power or not the scheme of things does not alter. Only there is a change of outlook. Why should you bear your load on the head when you are travelling on a train? It carries you and your load whether the load is on your head or on the floor of the train. You are not lessening the burden of the train by keeping it on your head but only straining yourself unnecessarily. Similar is the sense of doership in the world by the individuals.

BIG RELIEF FROM THE DISAPPEARANCE OF THE QUESTIONING MIND.

The frequently tormenting questioning word 'why' no longer exists in the mind's dictionary or vocabulary when it is realised that the questioner 'I' is not a real entity and is a fictitious or notional centre or just a phantom. And what a big relief it is, to be unburdened off this massive heaviness.

(Moreover, it is a futile struggle to find answers to all the 'whys' because answer to each 'why' leads to another 'why', almost never-endingly.)

Devotee : Is solitude necessary for a seeker?

Maharshi:
Solitude is in the mind of a man. One might be in the thick of the world and yet maintain perfect serenity of mind; such a person is always in solitude. Another may stay in the forest, but still be unable to control his mind. He cannot be said to be in solitude. Solitude is an attitude of the mind; a man attached to the things of life cannot get solitude, wherever he may be. A detached man is always in solitude.

Taking the attachment to the states, sleep and waking in the prison of the body, having the unending sleep due to ignorance, suffering in the dream world that is seen - By Your Grace, knowing the Truth of waking and sleep, breaking the cuff of 'l am the body' and throwing it off, and to attain the true Jnana, in the sea of Karunya, the Turiya light Ramana, please graciously rise up.

One of the simplest self enquiry practices informed by Ramana Maharshi is as under. Just after waking up naturally in the morning, preferably without an alarm, say weekends spend a few minutes quietly in the feeling of existence ie your feeling of I am for which no one else need point out to you. Repeated practice will help you recognize this feeling even in your day to day work affairs and you feel this under current of peace even during the trials and tribulations of day to day existence.i feel we can practice this even after siestas that we sometimes take in the afternoons. There has to be a firm determination before going to sleep,to hold onto the I am after waking and abiding in it.Just remember to spend a few moments of quiet silence, before embarking on the work required to be done next. All of us are intrinsically divine, and this exercise reminds us just that.

Once during a visit to the Ashram in the 1940s I was sitting outside the Old Hall with many devotees, facing Sri Bhagavan who was reclining on a couch.

A group of learned pundits were dis-
cussing certain passages from the Upanishads with great enthusiasm and profundity. All, including Bhagavan, appeared to be attentively listening to
this interesting discussion when, all of a sudden, Bhagavan rose from his couch, walked thirty meters to the north, and stood before a villager who was standing there looking lowly with palms joined.

Immediately the discussion stopped and all eyes were turned to Bhagavan and the villager standing at a distance. They appeared to be conversing, but at such
a distance no one could tell about what. Soon Bhagavan returned to his couch and the discussion resumed.
I was curious about this villager and why Bhagavan had gone out of his way to meet him. So, while the discussion continued I slipped away and caught up with him before he left the Ashram. I asked the villager what he and Bhagavan had talked about.
He said that Bhagavan had asked him why he was standing there so far away.
“I told Bhagavan, ‘I am only an ignorant, poor villager. How am I to approach you who are God incarnate?’”
“What did the Maharshi say then?” I asked.
“He asked me my name, what village I was from, what work I did and how many children I had, etc.”
“Did you ask Him anything?”
“I asked Him how I could be saved and how I could earn His blessings.”
“What did He tell you?”
“He asked me if there was a temple in my
village. I told him there was. He wanted to know the name of the deity of that temple. I told Him the name. He then said that I should go on repeating the name of that deity and I would receive all the
blessings needed.”
I came back to Bhagavan’s presence and sat among the devotees listening to the learned discussion, in which I had now lost all interest, realizing that the simple humility and devotion of this peasant had evoked a far greater response from our Master than any amount of learning.
I then decided that, though a scholar by profession, I should always remain a humble, ignorant peasant at heart,
and pray, like that villager, for Bhagavan’s grace and blessings.

“If a man considers he is born he cannot avoid the fear of death. Let him find out if he has been born or if the Self has any birth. He will discover that the Self always exists, that the body which is born resolves itself into thought and that the emergence of thought is the root of all mischief. Find wherefrom thoughts emerge. Then you will abide in the ever-present inmost Self and be free from the idea of birth or the fear of death.”

(Bhagavan in 'Talks with Sri Ramana Maharshi' 80)

Sri Bhagavan's manner of speaking was itself unique. His normal state was silence. He spoke so little, casual visitors who only saw him for a short while wondered whether he ever spoke. To put questions to him and to elicit his replies was an art in itself that required an unusual exercise in self-control. A sincere doubt, an earnest question submitted to him never went without an answer, though sometimes his silence itself was the best answer to particular questions. A questioner needed to be able to wait patiently. To have the maximum chance of receiving a good answer, you had to put your question simply and briefly. Then you had to remain quiet and attentive. Sri Bhagavan would take his time and then begin slowly and haltingly to speak. As his speech continued, it would gather momentum. It would be like a drizzle gradually strengthening into a shower. Sometimes it might go on for hours together, holding the audience spellbound. But throughout the talk you had to keep completely still and not butt in with counter remarks. Any interruption from you would break the thread of his discourse and he would at once resume silence. He would never enter into a discussion, nor would he argue with anyone. The fact was, what he spoke was not a view or an opinion but the direct emanation of light from within that manifested as words in order to dispel the darkness of ignorance. The whole purpose of his reply was to make you turn inward, to make you see the light of truth within yourself.

A. W. Chadwick is copying the English translation of the Tamil Kaivalya Navaneeta. When he came across some technical terms in it and felt some difficulty in understanding them, he asked Sri Bhagavan about them. Sri Bhagavan said: “Those portions deal with theories of creation. They are not material because the Srutis do not mean to set forth such theories. They mention the theories casually so that the enquirer may please himself if he be so inclined. The truth is that the world appears as a passing shadow in a flood of light. Light is necessary to see that shadow also. The shadow does not deserve any special notice, analysis or discussion. The book deals with the Self and that is its purpose. The discussions on creation may be omitted for the present.”

From The Garland of Guru's Sayings
Will an ornament become gold only when its form is destroyed by melting? Is it not [in reality] gold even while it is in the form of an ornament? Therefore, know that all the three [unreal] entities [the world, soul and God] formed by the mind, are likewise [in reality] nothing but existence-consciousness [Self].

“The first thought that arises is the “I”-thought. It is only after this that all other thoughts arise.”
Ramana Maharshi taught Self-inquiry as the most direct way for Self-realization, to look within yourself and see what is always present, and never comes and goes.

Last moments of Bhagawan Ramana

Bhagwan Sri Ramana Maharshi: Do you mean to say that the world is apart from the mind and it can exist in the absence of the mind?
Devotee: Yes.
Sri Bhagwan: Does the world exist in your deep sleep?
Devotee: It does.
Sri Bhagwan: Do you see it in your sleep?
Devotee: No, I don’t. But others, who are awake, see it.
Sri Bhagwan: Are you so aware in your sleep? Or do you become aware of the other’s knowledge now?
Devotee: In my waking state.
Sri Bhagwan: So you speak of waking knowledge and not of sleep-experience. The existence of the world in your waking and dream states is admitted because they are the products of the mind. The mind is withdrawn in sleep and the world is in the condition of a seed. It becomes manifest over again when you wake up. The ego springs forth, identifies itself with the body and sees the world. So the world is a mental creation.
Devotee: How can it be?
Sri Bhagwan: Do you not create a world in your dream? The waking state also is a long drawn out dream. There must be a seer behind the waking and dream experiences. Who is that seer? Is it the body?
Devotee: It cannot be.
Sri Bhagwan: Is it the mind?
Devotee: It must be so.
Sri Bhagwan: But you remain in the absence of the mind.
Devotee: How?
Sri Bhagwan: In deep sleep.
Devotee: l do not know if I am then.
Sri Bhagwan: If you were not how do you recollect yesterday’s experiences? Is it possible that there was a break in the continuity of the ‘I’ during sleep?
Devotee: It may be.
Sri Bhagwan: If so, a Johnson may wake up as a Benson. How will the identity of the individual be established?

i conclude writing here with the above praying for all shri Raman Bhagavan's Grace. 🙏

Today is 14 April [2020]. This day in the year 1950 April 14 at 0847 night Bhagavan ........what word I don't know I can use here. I am leaving it to you to decide according to your concept.
His own affidavit is better remembered than piety in corrective attempts.
"The body comes. the body goes. We are where we have always been.....where can "I" go? Always Here.
Pray Bhagavan to give Peace under all circumstances.
