[Information Wanted] Masikam Question

Namaskarams,

I have been doing Masikam for my father. We follow Pambu Panchangam(Yajur veda). For one particular month of Aug 2025, Shradda thithi is not there in Panchangam ( its showing as Soonya thithi) , so vadyar told we can skip that month. My father thithi is on Krishna Paksha Dasami (Thai month).

But I heard from others, for masikam we have to do on the thithi every month even if Shradda thithi is not mentioned in Panchangam.
I am confused. Please advise which one is correct?

Thank you.

When it comes to Māsikam (monthly shraddham), our shastram says it must be performed every month on the same tithi as the original pitru thithi, regardless of whether it's listed as a "Shraddha thithi" or not in the Panchangam.

Now, in your case - Krishna Paksha Dasami is your father's thithi. That’s what we stick to each month. If in a particular month, that tithi doesn’t appear at all (called Soonya Thithi), then only it can be skipped for that month. But if the tithi is present even for a short time, then we must do the Masikam that month.

Some Panchangams like Pambu Panchangam use practical filters and mention "Shraddha Thithi" when the thithi occurs at a suitable time (usually for doing Parvana Shraddham in day time). But for Masikam, which is done monthly as per samskāra, that rule doesn’t apply strictly.

So here’s the key difference:
  • Shraddha thithi shown in Panchangam - mainly for annual shraddham, and for planning Parvana shraddham with appropriate kaalam.
  • Masikam - should follow the actual tithi of the departed person each month, even if the Panchangam doesn’t mention it as “Shraddha thithi”.
If that Krishna Dasami tithi doesn’t come at all in that particular maasam, then yes - your Vadhyar is right - it can be skipped. That happens sometimes due to tithi kshayam (when the tithi starts and ends before sunrise). But if it's there, even for a short time, you must ideally do the Masikam.

So I would suggest that you ask your Vadhyar again to double-check if Krishna Dasami tithi truly doesn’t exist in that Tamil month. If it's just not marked as Shraddha thithi, but the tithi is technically there, then Masikam should be done.

you must do masikam on 18-08-2025 based on chaandra maana month. you know months based on suryan is chithrai, vaikasi ani, adi, avani, purattasi, aipasi karthikai, markali ,thai, masi ,panguni. In the same manner based on moon 12 months are there by name, chaithram, vaishakam, jyeshta ,aashaada, shravana, paathrapatha, aashvinam, kaarthikam, maarkasiram, pousham, maagam, paalgunam. it will be there in all panchangams. each month starts on the very next day after amavasai and ends on the next amavasai.

you know krishna paksham and sukla paksham based on sun. Based on moon also bahula paksham and sudha paksham are there. bahulam= krishna paksham. sudham=sukla paksham. for thai month krishna paksha dasami thithi must come pausha month bahula paksham dasami thithi . both are same. first one is based on sun and the other is based on moon.

As per our sastras if there is soonya thithi or athithi. we can do by saying during sankalpam shraavana maasay bahula pakshaey dasami thithi.
