Let's get real: A voyeuristic media is here to stay, so is readers' choice.

Rodion Raskolnikov, the main character in the famous Russian novel Crime and Punishment kills a pawnbroker and steals her money. He wants to put it to “good” use and he justifies his actions based on his own theory that there are two types of people - ordinary and extraordinary - and common moral and ethical standards codes does not apply to the former as they are rabble. He scouts the area of his crime offering leads to the authorities, expressing dismay and surprise while enjoying his murderous vanity. This pattern of behavior has been called the Roskolnikov complex.

Cut to the Indrani Mukherjea-Sheena Bora murder case and ask two questions. Who is the Roskolnikov here and as a corollary to that have we in the media taken a decision to think for our viewers and readers? Do we in believe that we are extraordinary so we can do as we please, abuse and accuse without a shred of evidence and harass people till they can take it no more?

For the past 72 hours, media houses have outdone themselves bringing gossip and innuendo, unconfirmed information and kite flying packed as news throwing all caution to the winds. The fact that many journalists have worked with Indrani Mukherjea’s husband Peter Mukherjea, a former media tycoon, has not helped.

This is a murder case like nothing before! And high society people are involved. I suspect the media to be trying covertly to hush up every nasty bit of this gruesome murder, by shouting from the rooftop about other, inane things. Ultimately some unfortunate underdog like the driver will get punished and all the rich & powerful people will get exonerated!

In media coverage of Sheena Bora case, sensationalism trumps proportionality yet again

There's no doubt that this high-society crime merits the attention of journalists ‒ but not by disregarding other stories

“The nation” has come to a standstill. It only wants to know one thing: Who killed Sheena Bora?

The developments since August 25, when the Mumbai police claimed they had solved a sensational murder case, would make any media watcher feel dizzy. Like a crime thriller that unfolds in deliberately calibrated detail, the Sheena Bora murder case has unraveled, holding the media and through it “the nation” in thrall. Apparently.

Who cares if the Patidars of Gujarat are screaming murder, drawing comparisons to Jallianwala Bagh in the way the police attacked participants at their massive demonstrations across Gujarat to demand reservations. Or that representatives of the Indian army continue to protest and demand One Rank One Pension, one of many promises that the prime minister has failed to keep. Or that apparently another Pakistani has been caught sneaking across the border. Or that the Chinese have successfully shaken up the Indian stock market. All this separately or together counts for little when we have a story of a gory murder committed three years ago that neither we nor the Mumbai police knew anything about until now
