“Let better sense prevail,” the Madras high court said while directing the Thenkalai and Vadakalai sects of Vaishnavites to abide by the rule of law and stop attempting to project their respective acharyas above ‘Lord Venkateshwara’ – the deity of Vilakoli Perumal Temple, Kancheepuram.

Justice N Anand Venkatesh passed the order while dismissing a plea moved by the Thenkalai sect seeking to quash an order passed by the executive officer of the temple prohibiting them from reciting verses in praise of their acharya – Sri Manavala Mahamuni — outside the temple.

“…if really the devotees belonging to the Thenkalai sect want to participate in the procession in a peaceful manner, they must participate in the procession at the time of reciting Divya Prabhandham, which is common for both the Thenkalai and the Vadakalai sects,” the court said.

Instead of attempting to project the respective acharyas above Lord Venkateshwara, which formed the basis for the dispute between both sides, at some point, one of the parties has to rest in abiding by the rule of law and making the entire event peaceful, the judge added.

“Therefore, if they (Thenkalai) want to act upon the above observations, they can participate in the procession outside the temple and recite Divya Prabhandham along with the devotees belonging to the Vadakalai sect,” Justice Anand Venkatesh said.

“If they feel they must recite the verses in praise of their acharya and close with the benedictory verses in praise of their acharya, they will have to necessarily approach the civil court so as to execute the decree dated May 15, 1915, granted in their favour,” the court said.

The judge concluded the judgement with a poem penned by him, highlighting that both the sects are ‘two petals of one stem and both belong to Lord Venkateswara Perumal.
