Introduction to Vedic Astrology

Let's continue...

The Lagna Lord's placement in second house indicates, the native will be benifitted with many gains, will be highly knowledgeble and scholar, will remain happy, pious & religious, honourable. Probability of polygamy is also seen from this formation.

For such natives, the intelligence and ideals are focused in the 2nd house of family, wealth and food. Their focus remains on accumulating more money and wealth. They are fond of good food and are good at making good food.

If we discuss about senses, 2nd house belongs to that of speech and also belongs to Lordess Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge and wisdom, when the Lagna lord is placed in the 2nd house, it becomes a combination of knowledge and wealth. This makes the person learned and wise. While seen in the context of the 5th house, the house of knowledge, 2nd is placed in the 11th from it. Hence, it shows gain of objective of knowledge or applying the knowledge in real life, since 11th house rules gain of objectives.

Second house is also the house of family. The presence of the Lagna lord in the 2nd house makes the native is committed towards the family. The commitment can also be extended to the family outside his immediate family, all the relations, and his community in whole. The native shall constantly try to fulfil the requirement of his family or the community. This also makes the native respectable in the eye of the family and the community and honourable too.

Along with the 9th house, the 2nd house is also the house of Vishnu, since 2nd house is the house of sustenance and Vishnu is the sustainer. Vishnu gives the dharmic ideals to the person and takes him on the path of dharma as mentioned in Srimad Bhagavat Gita. Placement of the Lagna lord in the 2nd house thus makes the person inclined towards dharma and dharmic activities. However for this indication to fully manifest, the karaka for dharma, Sun should also be well placed in the horoscope and preferably influence the houses of dharma.

Second house is the 8th house from the 7th house and thus rules the 2nd marriage. When the lagna lord is placed in the 2nd house, the native craves for relationship beyond the marital relationship. The native is highly passionate and provided the planets which can give passion (Venus- Mars or Mercury- Moon) are also under picture, the native shall have relationships outside the social boundaries. This also means that the native have multiple marriages with the break of former marriage concludes into latter marriages. This indication however comes true, only if the 8th house is afflicted (malefics in 8th and/or 8th lord weak and afflicted).

Since Lagna lord also brings the influence of Moon on the 2nd house while placed there, the natives sometimes find their wealth fluctuating, since Moon shows fluctuations to the indications where it is placed.

Dear Sri Ganesh,
Thank you very much for replying to my query in such detail. Your articles are very informative. Maybe your Guru is very strong and well placed ;-)

I believe that Astrologers have converted it into a materialistic science like any other science. I hope you won't get offended by this. Our Upanishads clearly state that, without knowing that Paratma, the knowledge of all other science is worthless. Tarati sokam Atmavit is the prescription, naanyah pandhaah vidyateayanaaya. Knowledge of Astrology is not the pandhaah, so it will not, by itself lead one to santhi. So one should never lose sight of this essential fact, while running after various sciences, including astrology. But the beauty of Vedic Astrology is, the classical works do emphasize the one eternal source of all, calling it by various names like Vishnu, Siva etc. But the practitioners of astrology generally give scarce importance to these extremely important aspects ruling the science of astrology. Hence their predictions sometimes go wrong. Also they tend to waste time and energy arguing about which method is correct, which parampara is authentic and so on and so forth. Getting lost in the sabdajaalam.
Adi Shankaracharya says elsewhere,
Sabdajaalam mahaaranyam chittabhramanakaaranam. This applies well to many of these fanatics.
Its not the issue with the science.

If one goes to the simple essentials of the science, and follows it as a nishkaama karmam, his predictions cannot fail, and simultaneously he will go beyond the science and towards the Paramaatma. This is my conviction.

Thanks KRN and MSSG for your valuable views. There is nothing like getting offended when someone is stating a fact like people are using this science for materilistic gains. I, whenever get an oppertunity, used to caution people around me to be careful and not to fall prey victim to such unscroupulus elements who mis use this beautiful science. I think little bit knowledge about what are the contents of this subject and how it works will help people clearly identify the real and real nots.. Hence this humble effort

Astrology-themed park opens on riverfront

NEW DELHI: Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia inaugurated ‘Nakshatra Vatika’, an astrology-themed garden, at the Yamuna riverfront near Civil Lines on Saturday. The garden is part of a larger project to beautify the riverfront and help clean up the river, which has been reduced to a mere drain.Nakshatra Vatika was the brainchild of the Delhi Jal Board’s horticulture department. “Delhi has been waiting for a green riverfront. We have delivered this at a meagre cost of ₹23 lakh. This proves two things: one that it can be done. And two, that it can be done at a low cost,” saidKapilMishra,Delhi’s water minister. The garden has also been hailed as a tribute to the ancient Indian knowledge of astrology, with references to religious mythology and astrological symbols — be it bushes grown, to plants that are considered holy.Keshav Chandra, DJB CEO, said the theme of astrology was an in-house idea and the park took less than two to three months to develop. “It is a low maintenance affair. It should not take more than ₹2 lakh to maintain it,” he said.Sisodia said the garden would provide the new generation, a space to reconnect with ancient Indian traditions. “Some of our traditions that stemmed from ancient knowledge have been deemed superstitious now. However, many of these practices have scientific backing as well,” Sisodia said. The minister expressed the hope that the garden would deter people from polluting the river and surrounding areas with filth and garbage.

Deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia inaugurated ‘Nakshatra Vatika’, a garden developed on the theme of astrology, at the Yamuna riverfront near Civil Lines on Saturday. The garden is part of the larger project to beautify the riverfront and help clean up the river that has been reduced to a mere drain.
Nakshatra Vatika was the brainchild of the Delhi Jal Board’s horticulture department. The capital’s water minister Kapil Mishra said, “Delhi has been waiting for a green riverfront. We have delivered this at a meagre cost of ₹23 lakh. This proves two things: one that it can be done. And two, that it can be done at a low cost,” Mishra said.
The garden has also been hailed as a tribute to ancient Indian knowledge of astrology, with references to religious mythology and astrological symbols — be it bushes grown to spell ‘om’ or plants that are considered holy.

Keshav Chandra, DJB CEO, said the theme of astrology was an in-house idea and the park took less than two to three months to develop. “It is a low maintenance affair. Sisodia said the garden will provide the new generations a space to reconnect with the ancient Indian traditions. “Some of our traditions that stemmed from ancient knowledge have been deemed superstitious now. However, many of these practices have scientific backing too,” said Sisodia.
The minister expressed hope that the garden will deter people from polluting the river and the surrounding area. “When people will visit the area, they will see how green and clean it is. When something looks beautiful, they will also take care of it,” said the hopeful Mishra.
Yamuna river is considered one of the most polluted rivers in the country, with poor levels of dissolved oxygen that supports aquatic life and high levels of toxins.
“With a park here, officials will constantly visit the area, making them more accountable for the place. Also, once people start visiting the place more, they will realize they are spreading the filth, and will take care to protect it,” the deputy CM said.

Athimber,

Thanks for the post. I am not a believer in Astrology but I am very much interested in the beautification of Jamuna riverfront. A wonderful project. I might visit in my next trip to India.

Thanks athimber for the wonderful information. As per shastras, there are 27 different plants/trees for 27 nakshtras. Would like to see this garden once. I think similar garden exists in Ranchi also.

Back again after a long interruption! As already said, there was something beyond my control due to which I could not spare time here. Let us continue from where we left. We were discussing about Lagna Lord's placement on various houses and so far covered 1st and second houses. Since it is a vast subject this particular point will repeat in many a place. So we will discuss it number of times. Hence let it be brief here so that I can elaborate at appropriate levels.

Placement of Lagna Lord at 3rd house makes a person sharp in mental powers and precise decision maker. He makes his point in a very clever and calculated move so that it derives desired results. Makes him very powerful and strong. A warrior to be precise. Will have a lot of assets to enjoy. Will possess excellent communication skills and also will be exponent of many arts. With a sharp mind set they can influence others very easily and impress upon them. Many good writers, musicians, dancers or sports persons have their lagna lord in their 3rd house. They may always be growth oriented and if we closely watch their career graph it will show a steady upwards trend. In other words placement of lagna lord in 3rd house will be booster for the house and its characteristics.

Fourth house belongs to family and mother and placement of Lagna Lord in 4th house makes a person deeply associated and attached with his family and mother. Native is set to receive all material pleasures. Will have a charming personality. Lagna lord (lord of first house) also represents karakatwa of 1st house karaka of which is Sun which natural atmakaraka. Where as 4th house represents happiness with moon as its karaka also have an element water as its characteristics. So we could have a Sun-Moon clash here which could also contribute some undesirable results. Native could also inherit his mother's properties.

Indian astrology is popularly referred to as Vedic astrology. This is not because it is there in the Vedas. There is no mention of astrology in the Vedas. However, it is one of the Vedangas, i.e., limb or branch of Vedas, and dates back to the Vedic period. Several of the Poojas and remedial measures prescribed in the Indian astrology are as per the Vedic system. Hence, it is called Vedic astrology.
The Vedangas are six in number. They are: Siksha or phonetics, Kalpa or ritual, Vyakarana or grammar, Nirukta or etymology, Chhandas or metrics and Jyotishya or astronomy and astrology. These are mentioned in the Upanishads.
It is impossible ascertain the exact time of origin of our astrology. Even the most famous historians differ wildly, from 1200 BC to 2500 BC while trying to fix our Vedic period. A lot of them, especially the westerners, still study India based on the Mahenjadaro and Harappan discoveries, which were discovered in the 1920’s!! Several archeological discoveries of recent times date our culture to 7500 BC, making it the ancient most civilization in the world. Our astrology has details of the horoscopes of Lord Krishna, Lord Rama and many other ancient Indian kings and queens, recorded thousands of years ago. The Bhishma Parva and Udyoga Parva chapters of Mahabharata mention many astrological descriptions and omens just before the Mahabharata war. It also describes a period of draught with several planetary combinations. There is also a very clear reference about two eclipses, a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse occurring, creating a rare 13 day lunar fortnight. Available scientific research data shows that the Mahabharata war must have occurred either in 3129 BC or 2559 BC. According to the Hindu Panchangas, maintained from ages,

Kaliyuga era is counted from February 17/18 midnight 3102 BC. Hindu epics like Mahabharata and Ramayana have been written off as myths by the western historians. However the recent discovery of the submerged ancient city Dwaraka, (the site of the legendary city of Lord Krishna, which got submerged in the sea after the death of Lord Krishna), led by Dr. S.R. Rao of the Marine Archaeology Unit of the National Institute of Oceanography of India lends a lot of credence to our mythology. Various texts attribute the origin of Indian astrology to various gods and Rishis. It is futile to ascertain who was the originator. The most popularly followed astrological classics today are the ones written by Rishis like Parashara, Varahamihira, Garga, Jaimini and their followers. People in those days had no satellites or telescopes and yet the planetary positions and their motions recorded by them are as accurate as the planetary positions and degrees recorded today using the space satellites. Our ancient astrologers used their divine intuition to record these planetary movements and their effects on us. Astrology has a twofold purpose. On one hand it is used as a tool to select the right month the right date and the right time to start various auspicious rites and rituals so that the results are better. On the other hand it is used as a guide to study the destiny of an individual.
Indian astrology is based on the theory of fate. The good and the bad actions of the past life determine your fate or Karma of your present life, and the actions of your present life determine your future Karma. According to Indian astrology a person is born at that place, on that day and on that moment when his individual fate is in perfect mathematical harmony with the progress of the stars in heaven. However it does not preach total dependence on fate. Astrology lets you know what you were born with, what your possibilities are, the limitations, your strong points and your drawbacks. What type of life partners and professions suit you and to expect is also indicated. It also prescribes various remedial measures to ward off the bad effects and to enhance the good results. Astrology is your roadmap of destiny. However your fate is in your hands. The scriptures guide us by telling us what is good and what is bad; what to do and what not to do; how to do and how not to do. You are given a piece of land and the seeds to sow. How much effort to put in to it, what amount of manure and water to add and when how to reap the produce is your job. After that it is you who have to act using your knowledge intelligence, discrimination and experience.

5th house is a wonderful position for Lagna lord to be placed. This forms a Kendra - Trikona combination. Makes one famous, intelligent, and gives artistic abilities. Dr. Rabindra Nath Tagore has an exalted lagna lord placed in his fifth house. The person is believed to have close relation with people in power. According to Jatak Parijat, if Lagna Lord is placed in 5th 9th or with lord of 5/9 the natives father would be a famous personality. However according to Parasara Hora Shastra, Lagna lords in 5th house also causes lesser or no happiness from sons to the native particularly on such occasion when it has serious affliction like debilitation.

A strong Lagna lord placed in sixth house could make one a high ranked army officer. It also an indication for a medical profession for the native. Influence of Saturn in such a combination also suggest one to be a good lawyer. However malefic association would bring in ill health. A person with Lagna lord in 6th house is also will have number of enemies. In case of birth is in Aries Lagna and Mars being posited in 6th house could cause serious health issues like deep wounds, or sever skin diseases or even small pox in respective Dashas of Mars or Mercury. Here these two planets being Lordships of 1,3,6 & 8th house makes a dangerous combination of 1-6-8 which indicates severe health issues during Dasha/antar dashas respective of lords. Lagna lord on 6th house also suggests the native being debt ridden, however if well placed could come out of it during its Dasha. 6th house Lagna lord with 5th house 5th lord influence indicates past birth indebtedness (Poorva Janma Karma Phala) where as 9th house 9th lord may indicate unfinished Karma's of this birth may be carried over to next birth according to some texts. In general, 6th house Lagna Lord is believed to have a tendency to give more negative results, it should be understood that a strong well placed LL in 6th is not going to be negative at all and makes the person strong and fit to face any kind of situation in life.

7[SUP]th[/SUP] house Lagna lord is supposed to be good for health and prosperity. It makes one extremely beautiful/handsome and fond of lot of travel. Blesses the native with all sorts of prosperity. It also results in excellent married life if well posited(without affliction) and also causes split/differences between couple in case of malefic company. It aspects 1[SUP]st[/SUP] house thus making it stronger. 7[SUP]th[/SUP] house also being house of public relation and partnerships other than that of marriage, placement of Lagna lord in this house, holds much importance. Especially so, for personalities from film, politics and media fields. If we take the horoscope of N.T Rama Rao who excelled in both Film and Political fields, born on 28.5.1923, he had Tula Lagna with Moon and Jupiter making a strong Gaja kesari Yogam in lagna itself and also being aspected by Venus the lagna lord from seventh house.

I am unable to post horoscopes here as the outlines go missing . There seems to be no provisions to upload tables here. can some suggest any methods to post tables and charts here?

Strong un afflicted Lagna Lord placed in 8th house makes one learned and famous. Native will have a spiritual inclination 8th house being moksha trikona house. For an Aries ascendent if Mars joins Moon either in 1st or 8th house, makes native very power ful and lucky. He tends to get unexpected wealth like hidden treasures, lottery or huge gains through speculation. A person with strong lagna lord in 8th house is supposed to hold excellent command over occult sciences, according to Bhavarth Ratnakar. However if it has any afflication like association of malefics it could prove disastrous for the native and may suffer from Chronic incurable diseases including skin or body disformation. Parashara sees such natives as sicky, thievish, extremely wrathful and also a gambler.

Sri Subharama asks:-

"I have seen people predicting correctly even without astrology and seen people who predict wrongly even with precise astrological calculations. How can you explain these type of phenomenon through natal or birth charts?"

Perhaps I can hazard a guess.

The story (handed down through oral tradition) goes that when Lord Subrahmanya attained fame by accurately predicting others' futures, Lord Shiva Parameshvara accosted his son and asked him to predict the greater Lord's future. The son replied: You will be guardian of a cremaorium, get hold of a dead man 's skull and go begging with it.

Infuriated, Lord Shiva cursed that all his son's predictions will fail. Thereupon, Goddess Paarvathi, seeing the son crestfallen and about to weep, interceded with her spouse to show mercy. Lord Shiva relented, and pronounced that half Lord Subrahmanya's predictions will come true, and the other half will not.

So, half the predictions of astrologers come true. The other half of the lost power of Lord Subrahmanya is not completely lost for ever but has disintegrated, and settles now and then in bits and pieces on the heads of "unlearned non-astrologers".

Surprisingly, therefore, their predictions can also occasionally come true. Like patients recovering when doctors have given up hope. Or "corpses" recovering on their way to the mortuary, to the cematorium, or to church for final rites.

The age of miracles is not yet over, "natal or birth charts" notwithstanding.

About Vedanta

Pranamam to all,

Vedānta is derived from Veda. Veda means knowledge and anta means conclusive. Therefore Vedānta means conclusive knowledge. Vedānta is a philosophy that clears doubts about the Brahman. Knowledge here means not the worldly knowledge. Worldly knowledge is materialistic in nature and is acquired for material prosperity. Worldly knowledge is all about temporal and corporeal objects. Spiritual knowledge is different from worldly knowledge. Spiritual knowledge deals with infinite and eternal Brahman. Worldly knowledge has different dimensions. Spiritual knowledge deals only with Eternity that is beyond human comprehension. It does not deal with objects. Worldly knowledge is gained by affirmation and spiritual knowledge is gained by negation.

Sri Manblunder, our just-joined member, speaking about Vedanta, says,

"Worldly knowledge has different dimensions. Spiritual knowledge deals only with Eternity that is beyond human comprehension. It does not deal with objects. Worldly knowledge is gained by affirmation and spiritual knowledge is gained by negation."

The truth, i.e. sathyam, might well lie in between these two extremes.

All humans, spiritually inclined or not, live in this transient world.

We gain knowledge by personal experience, by the experience of other humans as related or otherwise known to us, by introspection into esoteric areas, by seeing, hearing, reading, thinking, speculating, evaluating, assimilating, and by drawing our own conclusions. We amend and refine these conclusions as we mature, as we go along, as we gain more and more knowledge.

Events sometimes prove us right, sometimes wrong. Some of the questions we have are left partly answered, unanswered, or answered wrongly. Or, we simply find it difficult or impossible to accept the answers. We go on, nevertheless. It is all part of life, of living among humans and Nature. Of accumulating knowledge, and of amending and adding to this fund of knowledge as we go along, as we get wiser. Indeed, they complement each other. Make us fuller humans.
My own experience has been that spiritual knowledge mix, meld, fuse, unite with, and enrich worldly knowledge. The two are not necessarily mutually antagonistic as alleged.

When I affirm that God exists, is this negation? When I pray, am I doing a negative act? When I draw inspiration and mental satisfaction from reading, reflecting on and understanding religious texts, from appreciating the infinite depth of the positive experiences of our ancient rishis, am I being negative? Is all this vast spiritual knowledge, this Veda, totally negative?

When I hear that atom bombs have been dropped by powerful humans on powerless old men and women, on school-children, on the sick and bedridden in hospitals, on non-combatants such as nurses and doctors in hospitals and care centres, when I hear that billions of undetectable anti-human plastic cluster bombs have been rained on the countryside of Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, killing and maiming innocent civilians even today -- am I gaining positive knowledge that will help me in life?

When I do my daily nithya kriyas, is that the result of negation? When I hear that my dearest and nearest friend has died in a horrible traffic accident, is that knowledge positive?

Kindly elucidate, thanks.

Dear Sir,

Both Worldly Knowledge and Spiritual Knowledge are on the same axis no doubt...the difference being
Wordly knowledge involves learning.....Spiritual knowledge involves unlearning.

What I was really hoping for was an intelligible and substantive response from Sri Manblunder. I'll wait.

Meanwhile, let me say that continuous "unlearning", like peeling an onion, leads only to shoonyam (nothing). Joseph Conrad, the distinguished English author of "Journey Into The Heart Of Darkness" wrote: "When you reach the heart of darkness, there is nothing there." Zero. Zilch.

The "perceptions" we do have on ultimate truth are the accumulated result of assimilating continuous upadesham since our upanayanam. The gurus are themselves "self-realised" greats but, instead of shutting themselves off in Himalayan caves, they condescend to come down to our level to share the secrets of ascending the higher path.

Are we seriously contending that all realised yogis, all true sanyaasis like the revered heads of Sringeri and Kanchi mutts, are vacuum-skulled? Same also with Aadi Shankaraachaaryar, Madhvaachaaryar, Raamanuchaaryar, Ramana Maharishi?

To divorce "worldly" knowledge from "spiritual" knowledge and try to paint them as fisticuffing antagonists is a vain exercise. They are part and parcel of our human needs. They complement each other, enrich each other. Not all of us need to be homeless barefoot naked sanyaasis with a human skull for a begging-bowl to be labelled full of "spiritual knowledge". For all we know, these "non-producers" are probably bereft of both worldly knowledge and spiritual knowledge.

Gurave sarva lokaanam...... nithaye sarva vidyaanaam.....

Gurave jagat sarvam, thasmai shree gurave namaha."
