Introduction to Vedic Astrology

sir, Kindly see these pages from one to 4 in the https://www.tamilbrahmins.com/showthread.php?t=20577&page=3#top 1,2,3,4. details are there.

Thank you so much Mr. KGopalan. Would have been hard to search for this. I asked due to general interest without detailed knowledge of any astrology.

From browsing your link, it appears mainly Nakshathiram and Raasi of boy and girl are used in determining Muhurtham dates. I may be wrong but that is what I gathered. Not sure if place of wedding factors in the overall calculation.

It is a very valid point you have raised Sir. But in most of the cases venue is decided later after deciding the date and muhoortham. I have seen certain Vadhyars doing pariharam to remove 'sthala-dosha" if any..

Thanks. But I would prefer vaadhyaars assuming professional responsibility and taking into account possible "sthala-dosham" before fixing muhoortham. Why commit a paapam first, knowing it is a paapam, then do a praayaschittham?

Rather, why induce the innocent kartha/gruhastha to commit a paapam at all in the first place?

Don't think we can blame the Vadhyar's alone for this. Many families consider it as a prestige issue to conduct at specific Mandapams or hotels etc to exhibit their pride. Vadhyar is helpless here as he is set to loose the clint if he insist on not conducting the function at place of the familiy's choice. More over I don't know how many Vadhyars are practically aware of these aspects.

Dear Sri Ganesh65

Sorry I did not make it clear that by "place of wedding" I meant town, village, etc, away from the metropolis of Chennai. The lagnam changes with the geographical location, as you will agree. For example, sunrise at Chennai will not necessarily be in the same lagnam as sunrise at Kochi. Or at Pudukottai, or Palani.

As for hotels, mandapams, etc. (and places other than brides' parents' homes), pariharams to neutralise sthala-dosha might well consist of doing punyaaha-vaachanam. I have observed this being done.

Let us understand the Dasha system now. All the nine planets have been assigned certain period of importance in one’s life circle. They are called Dashas and delivery of promises in any chart is being fructified during the Dasha/antar dasha/Pratyantar dasha of the designated planet. There seems to be around40 plus seems used to be in vague sometimes back. However only 3 systems namely, Vimshottari Chara and Yogini dasha systems are mainly considered now a day. Out of which Vimshottari is the most practiced Dasha system. Expecting an overall life expectance of 120 years these have been drawn. Every planet have been given certain years as their ruling period in the Dasha system based upon the Nakshatra at which the birth takes place. Let us understand the system with the help of following chart.

Graha Mahadasha Nakshatras

Ketu 7 Years Ashwini Magha Mula
Venus /Shukra 20 Years Bharani Purva Phalguni(pubba) Purva Ashadha
Sun /Soorya 6 Years Krittika Uttara Phalguni(uttara) Uttara Ashadha
Moon /Chandra 10 Years Rohini Hasta Shravana
Mars/mangal 7 Years Mrigashirsha Chitra Dhanishtha
Rahu 18 Years Ardra Swati Shatabhishak
Jupiter /guru 16 Years Punarvasu Vishakha Purva Bhadra
Saturn /Shani 19 Years Pushya Anuradha Uttara Bhadra
Mercury /Budha 17 Years Ashlesha Jyestha Revati

So as per above if we know someone is born in Chitra Nakshatra, we can easily find out the starting dasha pattern for that particular child would be that of Mars. Now we need to calculate the Balance of Dasha for this particular birth. For this we need to divide the entire span of the particular Dasha (in this case Mars-7 years) by the span of the Nakshatra. Say suppose the birth takes place in the 0-1st degree of that particular Nakshatra, the almost entire period of that dasha a for the planet would be the balance of Dasha. It has to be calculated in proportion to the remaining part of the Nakshatra, with reference to the span of that particular Dasha. Now a day’s no need to do manual calculation as many panchangams and soft ware’s does it for convenience of us.

It is believed that Dasha received in a birth is related to past Karma's of the soul. It is important to get good Dashas at respective age. Because as already told, promises in a chart are delivered during the respective Dasha of the lord. So if appropriate Dasha is not there, the delivery promised in a chart does not happen in right time. For example, if a promise of mariage is there in a chart and the appropriate Dasha scheme is there only after the marriageable age is gone, that promise is of no use. So it is expected that Dasha of Lagna Lord, same of benefic planets, and lord of ninth comes in the early stages of life so as to have a prosperous life by native.

Dasha of 5th lord is most important as this house is directly related to past karma. In case there is affliction to this house or its lord and it this dasha comes at a younger age, the life of the native is going to be troblesome. In other words the results could be that of the bad Karmas of past life is going to bear fruit.

In general, Dashas of
i) Lords of Lagna and trikonas (5th & 9th houses) are always auspicious.
ii)Lords of Kendra & Trikona comibned causes Raja yoga of highest order - Hence their Dashas are to be highly beneficial for the native.
iii) For rasis of Venus as lagna (Tarus or Libra), Saturn becomes yogkarak by virtue of being lord of kendra as well as trikona
for Rasis of Saturn (capricorn and Aquarius), as Lagna, Venus becomes yogkarak by virtue of being lord of kendra and trikona
Same happens with Mars when it becomes as yogkarak for a Cancer or Leo lagna. So these Dashas in ones chart supposed to give good results.
iv) Dashas of lords of 3,6 & 11 are evil.
v) that of 8 & 12 are neutral and will give results according to its association.
vi ) A benefic plant if attains lordship of two kendras losses its beneficial powers and hence its dasha may not be so beneficial for the native.
vii) Similarly a malafic planet if it attains lordship of two kendras tend to loose its malevolence and act in a beneficial way.

It would be better if we understand auspicious/inasupicious planets for various lagnas as their Dashas is also going to be beneficial for the native.

For Aries ascendant, Jupiter and Sun becomes 9th and 5th lords respectively and hence are benefics. Mars becomes his Lagna and 8th lord and Moon the 4th lord are neutrals. Venus becomes Maraka ( by virtue of being 2nd lord) and any association of malafics with it going to be critical. In such case if Venus is associated with Saturn, it becomes certain Marakesh or in other words, the Dasha of Venus could be "Mrityu tulya"
Jupiter-Sun combination for a Aries ascendant forms Rajyoga despit the fact Jupiter is 12th lord.

For a Taurus ascendant Saturn & Mercury. Saturn being 9th &10 lord becomes Yogakaraka causing Rajyoga. Mercury though 2nd lord is not considered as Maraka because of its owner ship of 5th House ( Kona house).

For a Gemini ascendant, Venus is auspicious. Moon if not associated with malafics cannot be considered as Maraka, here Saturn and Mars are Marakas. Any Mercury-Venus association brings in Rajyoga.

For a cancerian, Mars is Rajyogkaraka Jupiter being 9th lord, is good. Saturn becomes Maraka.(due to lordship of 8th) Sun though 2nd lord not bad if no malafic association.

Leo:- Mars own 9th and 4th (Kona & Kendra) thus becomes Rajyoga karaka, Jupiter is 5th lordship is good and will have a soothing effect on its 8th lordship (neutralising) Mercury becomes Marka due to 2nd lordship and other malafics like Saturn also is maraka.

Virgo:- Venus's 9th lordship saves it from being maraka. In fact being the lord of house of Luck, Venus is the only planet auspiciuos for Virgo ascendant. Mars is Maraka here.

Scorpio: Jupiter though 2nd lord is also 5th lord so good prevails. Moon is 9th lord so good. Sun-moon combination makes Rajayoga. Mercury and Mars become Maraka.

Well, the above points are only one aspect and no judgement is to be made only on the lordship of planets as above. There are many more combination to be seen like palcements of the planets, its friendship, strength, and other factors. which will be explained in following posts.

Let us examine the state of planets whose Dashas are favorable/unfavorable.

Dash of a planet which travelling towards its exaltation point is called Arohini Dasha and that of a planet travelling further i.e. after exaltation ( now it would be going to debilitation point) point is called Avrohoni Dasha. Arohini Dasha is expected to bring good results and Avrohini the opposite.

Best Dashas in one's life would be that of Lagna Lord, 10th lord and Dasha of an exalted planet.

In the Dasha sequence if Saturn Dasha happens to be the 4th one or Jupiter to be 6th or Rahu or Mars's Dasha as 9th Dasha is set to bring in unfavorable results.

For eg. for a person born with balanc of Mars Dasha, Saturn would be his 4th Dasha, for a person with balance of dasha of Venus, Jupiter will be 6th like that.

Dasha of a planet placed in its last degree of a Rasi in any chart is not capable of giving good results.

Let us now discuss about Ashtakavarga. Ashtakavarga is an exclusive system for analysing various results. All Rasis ( not house remember.) are divided into 8 Kakshas or sub parts. Each Kaksha has a rasi span of 3 degrees and 45 minutes in a Rasi and is ruled by Lagna and other planets. The Nodes, Rahu and Ketu is not considered here in Ashtakavarga calculations. The influence of a planet in a Rasi is measured and marked with a "bindu" in eash Kakshas for this purpose ranging from 0 to 8 dependng upon their strength. Kakshas are ruled by differnt planets like 1st Kasha of each Rasi is ruled by Saturn,2nd belongs to Jupiter,3rd Mars, 4th Sun, 5th Venus, 6 Mercury, 7 Moon and last i.e8 by Lagna. Score of 0 is not all desired and 1-3 is considerd bad. 4 is average and 5 and above is Good.
