Research carried out by the Carnegie Institute of Technology shows that 85 percent of your financial success is due to skills in “human engineering,” your personality and ability to communicate, negotiate, and lead. Shockingly, only 15 percent is due to technical knowledge. Additionally, Nobel Prize winning Israeli-American psychologist, Daniel Kahneman, found that people would rather do business with a person they like and trust rather than someone they don’t, even if the likeable person is offering a lower quality product or service at a higher price.

With this in mind, instead of exclusively focusing on your conventional intelligence quotient, you should make an investment in strengthening your EQ (Emotional Intelligence), MQ (Moral Intelligence), and BQ (Body Intelligence). These concepts may be elusive and difficult to measure, but their significance is far greater than IQ.

I used to wonder how plain graduates with no formal professional degree have climbed the Corporate ladder of Private/MNC's with aplomb...

Their success lies in people management and understanding the nuances of the business...

A most important aspect as you grow in the Corporate hierarchy is your ability to delegate work..It is not that you delegate everything...It helps one to get freed from routine and mundane work & focus attention on those critical areas which are important to the Management.

Also equally important is your ability to adjust your leadership style based on the situation...You may like to direct, coach, facilitate or delegate based on the type of task & extent of relationship

.

They were perhaps selfish to the core and yet presented themselves as very caring for others. They were intelligent enough to know how to do that. That is the secret of their success. So intelligence ultimately wins. They cleverly stood aside to look at the thinker(themselves) who thinks. It is all just intelligence and nothing else. If you find a third class drop out climbing the social ladder effortlessly it means he understood the society better than you and me and that is nothing but intelligence which identified quickly the discount that is available in the society because of its "market inefficiency".

Cheers.

Lets be clear. when the Sht hits the ceiling, it is only the highest IQ person who can / will resolve the crisis !! all the rest about people liking people are all crap & good to discuss.

of course, if you want to succeed in corporate, u just need to sckup to your Boss.

Here we go again.
What if you are the boss, there is no sucking up. It is strictly pulling yourself by the bootstrap and achieving your goal. History is full of people who did not have the highest IQ but were successful.
Look at Bill Gates, warren Buffet, Ratan Tata, etc.

Show me a selfless man who has succeeded in material wold, and I will show you the best actor. We need to judge individuals achievement, and that is selfish.

I agree that EQ is more important than IQ especially these days.
I would like to add another and I would call it CQ(Cunning Quotient).
Believe me its the cunning types who somehow succeed most in life(I am talking about the mundane world here).

I have worked with co doctors who never used to turn up to work on time and we had to do all their duties but they were cunning enough to cover up for it.

Once I worked with a doctor who only saw some 5 patients a day and the rest of us would see some 60 patients a day(In the government outpatient department)

He would come late to work cos he would be spending the night getting drunk at some bar and then walk in to work 2 hours late.
He used to buy gifts for some nurse who would punch his attendance card for him and walk in to work as if nothing happened.
So on records he was not "late" cos his card would be punched on time.

Then he would take almost 1/2 hour to 1 hour just to see only 1 patient and the word got around that Dr so and so checks patients thoroughly and patients used to love to see him and wait even 2 hours for him.
He used to lie to patients that he is covering some other hospital too thats why he comes late.

Once some of us asked him "what the hell do you take so long to see patients?"
and he said "see I am building up my base for my private practice so I will take my own time to see patients cos I know you fools will be there to do all the work and when I open my own clinic patients will think I am the better doc cos I used to see them slower than you guys"

See these are types of doctors we get too..who use hospital as a launching pad even for politics.
Some are so active in charity work just becos they want to launch a political career.

Hi Prasad,

I understand the need for EQ etc.. But when there is a crisis, people seek out for the best of the best.

for eg, if a person suffers from a serious ailment, he goes looking for the best/high IQ doctor not a good talking, likeable person.

if you want some one to take India out of this dire situation, it requires a Genius to comeup with policies !!. not some likeable, presentable, nice talking man :) !!

so lets take this research in the right context.

Cheers,
JK

Dear JK,

For a doctor sometimes the situation differs.
I have had a few friends who were very very average students at college and even used to fail exams but have great surgical skills.

Some people have very very average IQ but have excellent surgical skills.

Surgical skills not related to IQ, they are related to EQ, ability to handlestress, ability to be precise & correct everytime.

But for those people with life threatening diseases like cancer etc.., it themost intelligent doctor who will come up with the right dosage, surgery, etc..treatment !!

thats why most of the Indians (who can afford) go to the US for all theirhealth issues. yuvraj singh is a classic example - he was misdiagonised inindia, finally had to go to US for treatment.

Dear JK,

Intelligence has very little role to play after a while cos its all boils down to experience finally.
Believe me the more a doctor sub specializes the more he becomes compartmentalized.
He/she only thinks within his/her speciality and fails to co relate with other systems in the body.

The Holistic approach is lacking thats why misdiagnosis happens.

Dear JK,

I will give you a simple example..sometimes its just being observant that actually helps you make a diagnosis.

Once when I was working in different set up many doctors there could not find the cause of rashes for a particular patient.

This young man in his early 20's had developed rashes and even seen specialist and cause for rashes was not determined.

Ok this patient was some sort of effeminate types and I am fond of such patients cos they talk with fanciful hand gestures and I read up lots about the gay community too out of personal interest.

One day I noticed he was wearing a black bra it was showing up thru his white shirt.
I asked him his sexual orientation and he told me he was gay and was a passive gay sorts.

I asked him "are you taking any hormone tablets to make your breast grow?"
and he said "yes"

So I told him to stop it and his rashes went away.It was a hormonal tablet allergy.
You see other doctors didnt dare ask a patient his sexual orientation and missed the finding.

Ok another case..Once I had a factory worker who showed up to hospital with elevated heart rate and tremors of hands.
All test done revealed nothing abnormal.

I noticed that this person had a good body physique.I asked him if he works out in gym and he said yes.
I asked him if he is taking any Fat Burners and he said yes.
Ok some fat burners come with high doses of caffeine and that can cause an increase in heart rate.

He stopped that fat burner and he was fine.

Ok you see I didnt learn about this from my text book.
Since I am a gym goer myself I spend lots of time reading exercise magazines esp men's magazines cos lots of info can be got from there.

Other doctors couldnt make the diagnosis cos they didnt read up on gym related complications.

So its not really intelligence I feel..its just having read the right info at the right time.

Well, I agree to some extent. But I would perhaps call these as shrewdness and tactfulness, rather than core intelligence.
I have seen such successful people wriggle out and bail themselves out when the discussions or situations get complex and they delegate it to the experts. They are highly perceptive and very good at manipulating others and themselves.

Of course you need intelligence. But you also need the ability for pattern recognition - to recognize and correlate the connectedness among the multitudes of information gathered in different contexts and stashed away in neural memory. How you acquire this ability is the million dollar question.

I still somehow feel practice makes perfect.
Co relation comes with experience...thats all.
When we do the same work day in and day out it becomes a reflex.

Ok I will give a simple example..after years of marriage even a once shy virgin becomes an expert in the art of love.

No one needs a degree to make babies...its experience and practice that makes the human race.

Yes, and if you want to call that success???
The topic is what is being successful? Being at the top of the corporate ladder, or being intelligent.
For the former you will need to know politics, and every one agrees politicians need no degrees

Dear ozone,

I have known many successful people in my field who even have a fleet of Porsche cars but the way they bend the rules to get there is sometimes not anyone of us would want to even dream off.

Some are blatant smooth talkers who can even sell you poison and you would gulp it.
These types ruin the medical field cos people start believing only what they say.

Once I had a patient who came to me saying he wanted me to do an Ultrasound abdomen to determine the progress of his gastric ulcer.

I told the patient he needs Endoscopy by a Gastroenterologist cos ultrasound abdomen wont pick up a gastric ulcer.

Patient got real wild with me saying that his regular GP has been treating him with medication and doing Ultrasound abdomen monthly and told me that his regular GP was on leave so he came to see me.

Patient started telling me that may be I lacked the experience to do an Ultrasound and thats why I wanted to refer him for Endoscopy.

So you see that doc was conning his patients and not refering them for endoscopy and patient thought thats the right thing.

I didnt tell the patient anything since he was already accusing me of being not experienced.
I thought let it be and its also not proffesional to point out another doctors con job cos patients cannot be trusted too.

So you see the harm con man do to the medical field?
Just to keep the patient and not wanting to refer him the doc could be missing out a diagnosis of stomach cancer.
But believe me patients somehow prefer con man docs these days.

dear Ms. Renu,
So, what is the bottom line? Successful people dont need intelligence to succeed. The general public prefer successful people?
Are we in agreement or still disagree with each other? That will help me determine whether and what to reply :)

Yes..succeful people do NOT need intelligence to succeed.
Anyone who is not brain dead can do anything in this world.
Intelligence is over rated.

Thats why I tell my son(he has a high IQ) all about EQ.
See no one taught me or anyone about EQ in school.
IQ was not a problem at all at school and at college but I feel that EQ is more important.

I can safely say I have quite a low EQ but since I dont measure success with money alone so I can say that I am contended and happy.

Todays kids need to be coached and guided about EQ.
It will help them face the challenges of the world better.

In any professional field just plain intelligence wont succeed..This is to be combined with tremendous ambition and at the same time communication skills...Unless you communicate your thoughts clearly & impactfully you would not be able to succeed in the Corporate world.

Move the Medical field...In the art & culture field what is required is the particular skill, a God father who would support you initially & tremendous amount of luck..Let us take the case of A.R.Rahman...He was not great in studies & had to drop midway but had a passion for Music through his dad & he got a God Father in Mani Rathnam who created his launch pad through Roja.

Dear sir,

Music itself is a study on its own.So I would never want to say that ARR was not good in studies.
