West Bengal Man Beaten to Death For Stepping Out to Buy Milk During Lockdown
Police use lathicharge to disperse crowd

Not knowing where to draw a balance amid this lockdown period, a 32-year-old man in West Bengal’s Howrah district was beaten to death by police officials as he stepped out on the streets to buy milk.

The man, identified as Lal Swami, had left his residence to visit the grocery store to buy milk. Unfortunately, he faced brutal police lathicharge when the personnel were vigorously clearing the streets, shuttering down shops and forcing people to go home.

He was rushed to the local hospital nearby but was declared brought dead. While the police claimed he died of a cardiac arrest due to existing heart ailments, the man’s wife alleged that he died of beatings.

Several instances of clashes between the police and individuals on the streets were reported amid a chaotic lockdown imposed across the nation. Reports surfaced that even grocery stores and daily produce shops were being shut in the state and personnel engaged in home delivery of essentials were being stopped by police officials.

Subsequently, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee clarified with a warning to state government officials that action would be taken against them if they stop essential services during the ongoing lockdown.

“I have instructed all police stations to permit home delivery of essential commodities. Vegetable vendors cannot be stopped. If the government order is not obeyed, action will be taken against administrative officials,” she said.
