Keen to shed what it calls a ‘colonial tradition’, IIT Kanpur has directed its students to don ethnic attire like kurtas, pyjamas and churidaars during their convocation ceremony

Lucknow: Keen to shed what it calls a “colonial tradition”, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has directed its students to don ethnic attire like kurtas, pyjamas and churidaars during their convocation ceremony, in place of the ceremonial black robes and head gear.

The convocation ceremony will be held on 15 and 16 June in which some 1,600 students of graduate and post graduate levels will receive their degrees from chairman of Tata Sons, Natarajan Chandrasekaran.

“For the first time, students will receive their degrees in the institute not in the British-time gowns and headgear but in kurta pyjamas (boys) and kurta-churidaars (girls) along with stoles in different colours to mark their specific courses,” IIT-K Director, Professor Indranil Manna told PTI over the phone.

He added that the students will be required to wear Indian clothes during all future convocations. Coinciding with the golden jubilee of the institute, the ceremony will also see professors donning golden coloured robes fully covering their suit.

They will also not be needed to wear black leather shoes and will be free to go in for Indian footwear in leather, Manna said.

பட்டமளிப்பு விழாவில் கறுப்பு கவுனுக்கு தடா - கான்பூர் ஐஐடி அதிரடி!

கல்லூரிகளில் பட்டம் பெறும் போது கறுப்பு கவுன் அணிவதை மாற்ற கான்பூர் ஐஐடி முடிவு செய்துள்ளது. பிரிட்டிஷாரால் அறிமுகப்படுத்தப்பட்ட கறுப்பு கவுன் முறைக்கு பதிலாக நம்முடைய பாரம்பர்ய உடைகளையே அணிய வேண்டும் என்றும் அதிரடியாகக் கூறியுள்ளது.

உத்தரப் பிரதேசத்தில் சமீபத்தில் நடந்த தேர்தலில் பாஜக அமோக வெற்றி பெற்றது. யோகி ஆதித்யாநாத் முதல்வரானார். அவர் முதல்வரானது முதலே பல்வேறு அதிரடி நடவடிக்கைகளை எடுத்த வண்ணம் இருக்கிறார். அவை வரவேற்பையும் எதிர்ப்பையும் பெற்று வருகின்றன.

இந்த நிலையில் கடந்த 60 ஆண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலாக பட்டமளிப்பு விழாக்களில் பயன்பாட்டில் இருந்துவரும் கறுப்பு கவுனை மாற்ற கான்பூர் ஐஐடி முடிவு செய்துள்ளது.

கறுப்பு கவுனுக்கு மாற்றாக நம்முடைய பாரம்பர்ய உடைகளான பைஜாமா, குர்தா மற்றும் சுடிதார்
போன்றவற்றையே அணியலாம் என்று கூறியுள்ளது. இதன் பட்டமளிப்பு விழா ஜூன் 15, 16 தேதிகளில் நடக்க இருக்கிறது. இந்த விழாவில் டாடா சன்ஸ் தலைவராகப் பொறுப்பேற்றுள்ள தமிழர் சந்திரசேகரன் கலந்துகொள்கிறார்.

பிரிட்டிஷார் அறிமுகப்படுத்திய கறுப்பு கவுனுக்கு முற்றுப்புள்ளி வைத்து, பாரம்பர்ய உடைகளை ஊக்குவிக்கும் வண்ணம் ஐஐடி கான்பூர் நிர்வாகம் எடுத்துள்ள இந்த முடிவுக்குப் பாராட்டுகள் குவிந்து வருகின்றன.

BHOPAL: Stoking a potential controversy, environment minister Jairam Ramesh on Friday called as "barbaric colonial relics" the practice of wearing the traditional coloured robe at convocation ceremonies and publicly removed his own gown at one such event.

"I still have not been able to figure out after 60 years of Independence why we stick to these barbaric colonial relics," Ramesh said while addressing students at the seventh convocation of the Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM).
