How Goa became a part of India

Goa-s-golden-jubilee

dear Prasad,

here is a more interesting view of the goa liberation and the shenanigans of vk Krishna menon, and also as viewed by the goanese themselves.

The goa military campaign, was equivalent to an elephant killing an ant. There was no opposition, and even though big deal was made of the Portuguese surrender, the military challenge was nil. ‘johar and mehmood’ going to conquer goa, was closer to reality, I feel.

Right behind the army were the Bombay baniyas, for whom, goa was a gold mine – all the imported stuff they could buy and which were unavailable till then in free socialist india.

Goa had a higher standard of living than the rest of india, and though corrupted, is still is nothing compared to Indian standards. There is a thriving grass roots movement to prevent the pillaging of land for minerals, unlike neighbouring Karnataka or Maharashtra

It might be like you said an elephant killing an ant, or more like a baby elephant trying to kill a mouse. But behind that mouse was the NATO and possible sanction in UN. India was a new country without friends in high places. So let us not sell the achievement short.

prasad,

there was no military threat from nato at that time and public opinion was on india's side - the world over. the only thing usa could do was to have a security council vote. remember this was a time of decolonization..and goa was backwaters to the rest of the world.

but it was felt, that india, just did the military thing, so that vk krishna menon could win the election. remember, this was just a warm upper to the 1961 debacle with china, when we got thrashed.

an achievement, would have been, had we 'kicked the rascals out' as nehru ordered his troops. today, that dream is just that.. a dream. we pray now, china does not humiliate us again in the fighting fields..

nobody opposed the return of goa. including me. i am just pointing out, that there is no need for jingoism. in this case. there were
dark under currents, cloaked under cloth of patriotism. ok?

Nizam & Hyderabad

Any news about a similar annexation of the Nizam's territory (including Hyderabad)?

There is a new movie by Nagarjuna suggesting that the Nizam was thinking of joining Pakistan, or at least staying out of India.

given their choice, most rulers wanted to revert to independent states.

afaik, sardar patel, called them all together, and basically ordered them to join the union. we must remember, that the british ruled only certain portions of india directly. those parts were given independence.

the accession of the princely states was the work of patel. hyderabad, travancore were among the big princely states that toyed with independence (yes our own tambram c.p.ramaswamy iyer was the dewan, who thought he could pull it off :)).

essentially it came to this. hindu majority princely states went to india, whether it had a raja or nawab (yes there were hindu rajas who lost their fiefdoms to pakistan).

the only exception was kashmir, which mainly due to nehru's passion for his ancient homeland, when the raja wanted to accede to india inspite of a muslim majority kashmir (jammu had hindu majority), nehru broke the nominal partition rule of partition, and declared kashmir outright belonged to india.

pakistan send its tribal baluchis etc to occupy western part of kashmir, the first instance of proxy fighters in the indian subcontinent. indian troops, first of its operations post independent india, but still british led, occupied srinagar and 2/3 of kashmir and all of jammu. cease fire was declared, because situation was getting messy as each of the new country had immense problems elsewhere and no money to fight.

that to me, is the bare truth sans emotions.

Mr K,
Our biases should not change the facts.

According to reliable sources:
Sheikh Abdullah - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah was born in soura, a village on the outskirts of Srinagar, just eleven days after the death of his father Sheikh Mohammed Ibrahim, a middle class manufacturer and trader of Kashmir shawls. In his own words he was born an orphan. Sheikh Ibrahim like the poet Iqbal was the descendant of a Hindu Kashmiri Pandit named Ragho Ram Koul who was converted to Islam in 1890 by the saint Rashid Balkhi and after conversion changed his name to Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah. Thus Sheikh Abdullah was the namesake of the progenitor of his family branch.

Kashmir an integral part of India.
Just as much as Texas is part of USA.
We might be Tamil but majority of us are people of Indian origin. I strongly feel that people who question the accession of Kashmir to India, are less than patriotic. I am sorry to say this.
I have had problem with Mr. Kunjuppu's statement regarding India, and Indians before.

Janani janmabhoomishcha swargadapi gariyasi’’, well illustrates this sentiment. Janani (mother) and janmabhoomi (motherland) are more exalted than even swarg (heaven).

Social crusader Anna Hazare on Tuesday reiterated that Kashmir is and will remain an integral part of India and that, if needed, he was ready to again participate in a war against Pakistan on the issue.

"
The Instrument of Accession is a legal document executed by Maharajah Hari Singh, ruler of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir, on 26 October 1947. By executing this document under the provisions of the Indian Independence Act 1947, Maharajah Hari Singh agreed to accede to the Dominion of India."

Thousands of brave Indians paid for saving this state.
I am saddened by PIO's, who have no stake in the game willing to give up part of India.

in the interest of maintaining decorum and to avoid unnecessary snooping by RAW (they got new powers now) i have deleted portions of my post, which you might disagree with. :)

there are now thoughtful voices in india, who are calling for a political solution, as the military one appears to go nowhere. but then, as someone predicted, like the khalistan crisis, the whole thing might dissipate due to exhaustion on the part of the participants and end in a whimper and finally elections.

let us hope that happens....

ps. anna hazare, going to fight pakistan is a joke. let us not stretch our imagination that far here ;)

Political solution? High hopes. No political solution is possible when pakistan and muslims are involved. Afgan president recently said pakis and afagns are twins. it is a shame that those who know the fates of hindus in pakistan and bangladesh and that of hindu pundits in kashmir are blissfully unaware of islamic power.

A political solution of a divided Kashmir would have been possible if only so much time had not been wasted. But now also it is possible but much of Kashmir might have to be ceded to pak. Anyway today there are few lakhs of hindus in and around Jammu, Ladakh areas. So, if these areas are retained by India and protected effectively India can save a lot of headaches. But I don't know why we are still troubling ourselves with muslim chief ministers, legislators and pumping in more money into Kashmir than even perhaps our country's defence and thus indirectly financing Pak to trouble us; this is the typical வடியைக் கொடுத்து அடி வாங்குவது according to me.

amen :)

Have you made any jyotisham analysis on this (Kashmir) problem? I would like to know what josyam reveals as the possible outcome of this extremely intricate problem.

Regards

Frankly, I don't know on what basis I should proceed; horoscope for which moment? I do not know. So, as regards Kashmir itself I have done nothing.

But the Indian Independence Horoscope (IIH) is not very hope-inspiring and its third house (brothers, sisters, intelligence, neighbours, immediate relatives, correspondence and communicative ability, etc.) is very badly afflicted and so India's relationship with all its neighbours will likely continue in the "show love but be careful" way. In effect India will gain mcuh if it builds its arms power so much as to intimidate its neighbours because India's neighbours will never be trustworthy for it. Viewed in this background the Kashmir problem will most likely turn from the present highly septic sore on the head portion of the Indian map which it is, into gangrenous state, and then it may have to be surgically removed in order to save the rest of the body.

I only hope our rulers get unbiased and fearless advice from their experts.
