This is a very rare probability. In one case in which the husband died in the hospital and on hearing the news the wife died at home, the tithis were different!

Anyway, if a contingency of the type cited by you occurs, the sraaddham for father alone need be done because the status of the aatmas of females as "pitrus" (meaning forefathers, not foremothers) is subordinate to that of their husbands only. As evidence we may cite that afterthe mother dies and the father is alive, the son cannot start performing "tarpanam" till his father dies. Second, in the tarpana ritual also, the riks are chanted only in the case of the male ancestors.

You see our scriptures were male-centric.

But one need not be surprised if the vaadhyaar today comes up with a rule saying the mother's sraaddham should be done on the next tithi or something like that so as to ensure that income also.
