Jo Achyutananda Jo Jo Mukunda - lullaby to Lord Venkateshwara by Annamayya

Jo Achyutananda(immutable/imperishable one), Jo Jo Mukunda!

O Embodiment of Eternal bliss/Supreme happiness,

O Rama Govinda.||

Your play at Nanda's house is Mesmerising.

Maidens of surpassing beauty are serving you.

Your lovely deceptive acts made some call you a thief.

You are our dear Ranga.||

O Father of all, come dear.

Here is milk in a golden bowl.

All the maidens are lying that you are a thief.

Come and play with me, my adorable boy.||

O Marvelous boy! You made use of Mount Govardhana as an Umbrella.

You punished the wicked/arrogant Kamsa and took charge of Mathura.

O beloved son of Devaki||

With Love, Tallapaka Annamayya tells this lullaby(Jola) to his Lord Sri Venkateshwara,

the bestower of prosperity and auspiciousness to all.

O Madana Gopala.||

"By whatsoever way men worship Me, even so do I accept them; for, in all ways, O Partha, men walk in My path."

- Bhagawad Gita

"Why should you be frightened? Hold fast to God. What if the world is like a forest of thorns? Put on shoes and walk on the thorns. Whom should you fear? You won't have to play again the part of the 'thief' in the game of hide-and-seek, once you touch the granny.”

Humko Manki Shakthi dena - written by Sri Gulzar

O God, Please bestow us Strength of Mind.||

Before winning over others, May we conquer ourselves(Self-control).||

May our hearts be free from all kinds of Prejudice.
May we always be ready for Forgiveness.
May we discard falsehood and follow the path of Truth.||

Whatever may be the difficulties in the path, may we continue to Work.
May we tread the path of Dharma(righteousness).
May we possess Self-confidence to fight evil.||

- Sri Gulzar

"Men are taught from childhood that they are weak and sinners. Teach them that they are all glorious children of immortality, even those who are the weakest in manifestation. Let positive, strong, helpful thoughts enter into their brains from very childhood."

Marugelaraa O Raaghavaa - - - Sri Thyagaraja Kirtana

O Rama, Why this screen(Veil of Maya) between You and me.||

Why this screen(marugu), O Lord dwelling in both Living and Non-Living!
O Supreme Lord, who is beyond everything(parAtpara);
O Lord, who has Sun and Moon (one who sheds blissful nectar(sudhAkara)) as eyes(lochana)||

O Lord! Having searched my inner recesses of the mind(antarangamuna);
I have perceived that, it is You alone,
who has become everything(Living/Non-Living) – The Consciousness/Atman in all beings;
I shall not even think of anyone other than You;
please redeem me, by removing this screen(veil of Maya).
O Lord praised by this Thyagaraja!

- Sri Thyagaraja(18th Century)

"A man attains this state when his mind is one hundred percent absorbed in God. When Hanuman returned from Ceylon, Rama said to him: 'You have seen Sita. Tell me, how did you find her?' Hanuman said: 'O Rama, I saw that only the body of Sita lay there; it held neither her mind nor her soul. She has indeed consecrated her mind and soul to Your Lotus Feet. Therefore I saw only her body in Ceylon. Further, I saw the King of Death prowling about. But what could he do? It was only a body; it had neither mind nor soul.'"
- Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa
"I admire the British perseverance and the American spirit of equality. I want you to make a European society, with India’s religion. But mark you, if you give up that Spirituality, leaving it aside to go after the materialising civilisation of the West, the result will be that in three generations you will be an extinct race; because the backbone of the nation will be broken, the foundation upon which the national edifice has been built will be undermined, and the result will be annihilation all round."

Om Jai Jagdish Hare - Written by Sri Shardha Ram Phillauri

O Lord of the Universe! O Lord Hari! Victory to Thee! All Glory to Thee!||

O Lord of the whole Universe
Thou banisheth
All Thy devotees' agonies and sorrows||

He who's immersed in your devotion,
reaps the fruits of Thy love;
Gets freed from all the worldly problems,
and has all the happiness, prosperity and health.||

Thou art Mother and Thou art Father,
At Thy feet I seek Eternal Truth,
At Thy feet alone do I hope;
You are the Supreme Soul, you are the indweller in all
Thou art Perfect, Eternal, Absolute
O Lord of all Creation||

Thou art of Supreme Perfection,
O Omnipresent being, the Master of all;
My destiny is in Thy Hands,
O Supreme Soul of all beings,
O Lord of the whole Universe||

Thou art an ocean of mercy,
Thou art the protector of all,
O Lord, I am ignorant, attached to the fruits of action,
I am Thy servant and Thou art the Master,
Grant me Thy divine grace,
O Lord of the whole Universe||

Thou art beyond perception,
Formless and yet of multiform,
O Life in all beings;
Grant me a glimpse of Thyself,
Guide me along the path to Thee,
O Lord of the whole Universe||

O Friend of the poor and feeble,
Benevolent Saviour of all;
Offer me Thy hand of compassion,
I seek refuge at Thy feet,
O Lord of the whole Universe||

O Lord, Help me transcend all vanities and worldly desires,
Free me from all sins,
Bless me with single-pointed devotion and faith;
Let me be in Eternal service unto Thee
O Lord of the whole Universe||

- Sri Shardha Ram Phillauri (19th Century)

"Listen. There is no scarcity of moths when the lamp is lighted. When God is realized, He Himself provides everything for His devotees. He sees that they do not lack anything. When God is enshrined in the heart, many people come forward to offer their services."

"Once a young sannyasi went to a householder to beg his food. He had lived as a monk from his very birth; he knew nothing of worldly matters. A young daughter of the householder came out to give him alms; He turned to her mother and said, 'Mother, has this girl abscesses on her chest?' The mother said: 'No, my child. God has given her breasts to nurse her child when she becomes a mother.' Thereupon the sannyasi said: 'Then why should I worry about myself? Why should I beg my food? He who has created me will certainly feed me."

"If you meditate on an ideal you will acquire its nature. If you think of God day and night, you will acquire the nature of God. A salt doll went into the ocean to measure its depth. It became one with the ocean. What is the goal of books or scriptures? The attainment of God. A man opened a book belonging to a sadhu. He saw the word 'Rama' written on every page. There was nothing else.”

||O Mother Sita, please request Rama to rescue me.||

Please request Him, O jewel among womenfolk.||

O Mother Janaki, daughter of Janaka; please request Rama to rescue me.||

Request your Lord, staying by His side and pressing his cheeks at the time of meeting Him in Love.||

Request Him, the inner consciousness of the Universe, when he is in privacy with you.||

O Virtuous Mother, convince Him when He awakes from sleep.

The One, worshipped by Mother Parvati(adrija).

The Lord of Bhadragiri (Bhadhrachalam).||

- Sri Bhadhrachala Ramadasu(17th century)

"A man said to Ravana, "You have been going to Sita in different disguises; why don't you go to her in the form of Rama?"

"But", Ravana replied "when I meditate on Rama in my heart, the most beautiful women-celestial maidens like Rambha and Tilottama-appear no better than ashes of the funeral pyre. Then even the position of Brahma appears trivial to me, not to speak of the beauty of another man's wife."

"O Mother(Kali), make me like Sita, completely forgetful of everything-body and limbs - , totally unconscious of hands, feet, and sense-organs - only the one thought in her mind,

"Where is Rama?""

– Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa

"- - -And what to speak of Sita? You may exhaust the literature of the world that is past, and I may assure you that you will have to exhaust the literature of the world of the future, before finding another Sita. Sita is unique; that character was depicted once and for all. There may have been several Ramas, perhaps, but never more than one Sita! She is the very type of the true Indian woman, for all the Indian ideals of a perfected woman have grown out of that one life of Sita; and here she stands these thousands of years, commanding the worship of every man, woman, and child throughout the length and breadth of the land of Aryavarta. There she will always be, this glorious Sita, purer than purity itself, all patience, and all suffering. She who suffered that life of suffering without a murmur, she the ever-chaste and ever-pure wife, she the ideal of the people, the ideal of the gods, the great Sita, our national God she must always remain. All our mythology may vanish, even our Vedas may depart, and our Sanskrit language may vanish forever, but so long as there will be five Hindus living here, even if only speaking the most vulgar patois, there will be the story of Sita present. Mark my words: Sita has gone into the very vitals of our race. She is there in the blood of every Hindu man and woman; we are all children of Sita.”

Pibare Ramarasam(drink the Divine nectar of Rama) - by Sri Sadasiva Brahmendra

O Mind, drink the nectar of divine name Rama.||

It dispels fear and grief from the cycle of birth and death.
It is the quintessence of all the Vedas and other Scriptures.||

It is the sacred song sung in the hermitages of the holy and enlightened Yogis.
Great Sages Suka, Saunaka and Kousika enjoyed that nectar.||

Why don't you respond, O Lord, Kodandapani (One with a bow in hand)||

O Lord, Why don't you talk to me||

Never even in a dream i forget thinking of your name

O my dear Father||

You showered your grace even on a small squirrel trying to help you in her humble way rolling in sand,

Why don't you talk to me dear, i have immense faith in you,

O my dear Father||

By mere touch, you obliterated the curse and transformed a stone into being,

O my dear Father, you are my sole refuge||

What am i before you, don't be adamant dear,

please respond to my prayers, shower your grace,

O my dear Father||

People call you "The Protector of Devotees"

Show Mercy, O Lord of Ramadasu.||

“Little children play with dolls in the outer room just as they like, without any care of fear or restraint; but as soon as their mother comes in, they throw aside their dolls and run to her crying, "Mamma, mamma." You too, are now playing in this material world, infatuated with the dolls of wealth, honour, fame, etc., If however, you once see your Divine Mother, you will not afterwards find pleasure in all these. Throwing them all aside, you will run to her. So long as the child remains engrossed with its toys, the mother looks after her cooking and other household duties. But when the child no longer relishes the toys, it throws them aside and yells for its mother.Then the mother takes the rice-pot down from the hearth, runs in haste, and takes the child in her arms.”

– Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa

"I envy no one, nor am I partial to anyone. I am equal to all. But whoever renders service unto Me in devotion is a friend, is in Me, and I am also a friend to him. He quickly becomes righteous and attains lasting peace. O son of Kunti, declare it boldly that My devotee never perishes."

Bramhakadigina Padamu - Sri Annamacharya Kirtana

Here is the foot worshipped by Bramha.

That foot which symbolises Brahman (Supreme consciousness). ||

The foot that scaled the entire earth.

It is the foot that was placed on Bali's head.

The foot which measured the whole universe and rescued virtuous. ||

The foot that obliterated the sin of Ahalya.

The foot that danced on the hood of Kaliya snake.

The foot that is comforted by Mother Lakshmi with Love. ||

The foot that granted boons to the great yogis in many ways.

The foot that is resting on Tiru Venkatagiri - Seshachala.

The Supreme abode||

- Sri Annamacharya(15th Century)

"It is necessary to pray to Him with a longing heart. The kitten knows only how to call its mother, crying, 'Mew, mew!' It remains satisfied wherever its mother puts it. And the mother cat puts the kitten sometimes in the kitchen, sometimes on the floor, and sometimes on the bed. When it suffers it cries only, 'Mew, mew!' That's all it knows. But as soon as the mother hears this cry, wherever she may be; she comes to the kitten. Longing is like the rosy dawn. After the dawn out comes the sun. Longing is followed by the vision of God.”

This bouquet of twelve verses was imparted to a grammarian by Sri Adi Shankaracharya adored as Bhagawadpada.

What am I?

“I am the Lord of lords. I am devoid of even a touch of jealousy and hatred. I am He that fulfils the desired object for those who are bent on realizing the goal. I am undecaying, I am imperishable. I am the Lord, I am the consciousness of the inner self, I am full of supreme bliss, I am the supreme self, I am the infinite. I am full of Bliss, Knowledge and the realization of the Self. I am far aloof from any thought of the objective. I am delighted at heart by that which is not objective.

I pervade up and down and around with my own extraordinary glories. I am He who appears to be determined by means of argument, counter argument and enquiry. I am free from changes such as birth, thinness, senility and death; for I am other than the body. I am unattached to the objects of the senses, such as sound and taste; for I am without sense-organs.

I am free from sorrow; attachment, malice and fear; for I am other than the mind. For it is written in the Upanishad, “He is without breath and without mind, pure, higher than the high and imperishable.” I am verily the Supreme Brahman (consciousness) which is eternal, stainless, and free; which is one, indivisible, and non-dual; and which is of the nature of Bliss, Truth, Knowledge and Infinity.

I am without attributes and action, eternal and pure, free from stain and desire, changeless and formless, and always free. I am the revealer of oneness. I alone am the supreme reality for minds, purified by a thorough understanding of the (Vedantic) formula. I am the sun that dispels ignorance like the darkness of the night.

I am the healing balm to evils. I am devoid of all conditional properties. I am the acme of liberality. I am He that rescues all by granting the fourfold desires (merits, riches, pleasures and liberation) in various ways.

I am Knowledge. I am the Known. I am the Knower. I am all the aids to Knowledge. I am the pure Soul – existence bereft of Knower, Knowledge and Known. I am devotion, I am worship, and I am liberation. I alone am the means to liberation. I am the ruler of all beings. I am the root cause of all that is past, present and future.

I am neither the mind, intelligence, ego nor the chitta(seat of memory); neither the ears nor the tongue nor the senses of smell and sight; neither ether nor air, nor fire, nor water nor earth – I am eternal bliss and awareness – I am Shiva! I am Shiva!

I am neither the prana (vital force), nor the five vital breaths, neither the seven elements of the body, nor its five sheaths, nor hands, nor feet, nor tongue, nor other organs of action. I am eternal, bliss and awareness – I am Shiva! I am Shiva!

Neither greed nor delusion, nor loathing, nor liking have I; nothing of pride or ego, neither of dharma or object, nor of desire or liberation. I am eternal, bliss and awareness – I am Shiva! I am Shiva!

Nothing of pleasure or pain or virtue or vice do I know, of mantra or sacred place, of Vedas or sacrifice; neither am I the eater, nor the food nor the act of eating; I am eternal, bliss and awareness, - I am Shiva! I am Shiva!

Death or fear have I none nor any distinction of caste; neither father nor mother; nor even a birth have I; neither friend nor comrade, neither disciple nor Guru. I am eternal, bliss and awareness, - I am Shiva! I am Shiva!

I have no form or fancy, the all-pervading am I; everywhere I exist, and yet am beyond the senses; neither salvation am I, nor anything to be known. I am eternal, bliss and awareness, - I am Shiva! I am Shiva!"

- Sri Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya

“Let positive, strong, helpful thoughts enter into their brains from very childhood. Lay yourselves open to these thoughts, and not to weakening and paralyzing ones. Say to your own minds, “I am He. I am He.” Let it ring day and night in your minds like a song, and at the point of death declare, “I am He.” That is the Truth; the infinite Strength of the world is yours. Drive out the superstition that has covered your minds. Let us be brave. Know the Truth and practice the Truth. The goal may be distant, but

‘Arise, Awake, and stop not till the goal is reached.’“

“My dear Father, the source of my strength, of which you are asking, is also the source of yours. Indeed, the original source of all kinds of strength is one. He is not only your strength or mine, but the only strength for everyone. Without Him, no one can get any strength. Whether moving or not moving, superior or inferior, everyone, including Lord Brahma, is controlled by the strength of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

The Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is the supreme controller and time factor, is the power of the senses, the power of the mind, the power of the body, and the vital force of the senses. His influence is unlimited. He is the best of all living entities, the controller of the three modes of material nature. By His own power, He creates this cosmic manifestation, maintains it and annihilates it also.”

– Bhaktha Prahalada in Bhagavatam

"- - - there is no being, moving or stationary, which can exist without Me.- - -" - Bhagawad Gita

"Why do I ask you to think of God and chant His name in solitude? Living in the world day and night, one suffers from worries. Haven't you noticed brother killing brother for a foot of land? The Sikhs said to me, 'The cause of all worry and confusion is these three: land, lust, and money.'”

Bhali Bhali Bhali Bhali Deva - Composed by Sri Pingali Nagendra Rao (for Mayabazar)

Ah! O Lord! Your divine play (using your inscrutable power - Maya) is awesome/mesmerizing/wonderful/marvelous.||

In this play, one appears to be suffering, the other seems to be enjoying;
O Omniscient being, for you all this is a mere Entertainment.
Even Diti(Goddess of Earth) doesn’t know who wins your grace. ||

This world of yours, which is a mixture of happiness and suffering, going on endlessly (cycle of births and deaths) is your divine play. They are indeed blessed, who know the Truth behind this drama (You are the only Real/Eternal/Immutable/Imperishable one) by comprehending your divine acts.||

- Sri Pingali Nagendra Rao

"Neither the gods nor the great sages know My birth; - - - I am the source of all; everything is produced out of Me, knowing thus the wise worship Me with devotion. Though I am birthless, immutable and the Lord of creatures, yet resorting to My Prakriti, I come into being through My own inscrutable power (Maya)." – Bhagawad Gita

P.S: May Lord Krishna bless all of us with intellect to discriminate what is right and what is wrong. May we tactfully/wisely/successfully play this drama of Life and finally merge in our Universal Mother (Sacchidananda – The Eternal Biss).

Sri Saarangamji,

In Telugu, Modaka(noun) means something which is used to beat, Modu(verb) means to beat very hard. I have translated Sri Thyagaraja Kirtana (Sri Gananatham) in the context of Telugu language. However, Sri Thyagaraja kritis contains many Sanskrit words, which are not being used in present form of Telugu as they are increasingly being replaced by native dialects with more or less same meaning. You are absolutely right, in sanskrit Modakam means 'offering'.

There is no provision to edit the previous posts. I leave it to the Moderators discretion.

Muddugare Yashoda - by Sri Annamacharya

In this lovely song, Annamayya describes the beauty of child Krishna, comparing him with the various precious stones like diamond, ruby, sapphire, etc.

He is the lovely toddler (pearl) of Yashoda, playing in her front yard. He is the all powerful; son of Devaki.||

He is the manikyam (ruby) of all gopikas. He is the vajrayudham (all-powerful diamond like weapon) to the evil Kamsa. He is the emerald (paccha) of the three worlds (lokas), radiating light. Dwelling in everyone, He is our little Krishna.||

He is the coral (pagadamu) of beautiful Rukmini. He is the agate (gomedhikamu) that lifted Govardhana mountain. He is the cat's eye (vydooryam) in between conch (Sankham) and discus (Chakram). He is lotus-eyed (Kamalaksha), our saviour.||

He is like the topaz (pushyaragam) on the heads of Kaliya (serpent). He is the sapphire (Indraneelam), our protector, dwelling in Sri Venkatadri (Seshachalam). He is the divine gem in the ocean of milk. He is Padmanabha (one with lotus at navel), moving like a boy amongst us. ||

- Sri Annamayya(15 Century)

"Women are, all of them, the veritable images of Shakti. In northwest India the bride holds a knife in her hand at the time of marriage; in Bengal, a nut-cutter. The meaning is that the bridegroom, with the help of the bride, who is the embodiment of the Divine Power, will sever the bondage of illusion. This is the 'heroic' attitude. I never worshipped the Divine Mother that way. My attitude toward Her is that of a child towards its mother. "The bride is the very embodiment of Shakti. Haven't you noticed, at the marriage ceremony, how the groom sits behind like an idiot? But the bride - she is so bold!""
- Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa

"In India, the Mother is the center of the family and our highest ideal. She is to us the representative of God, as God is the mother of the Universe.”

Lord, we have a plea on behalf of all

Give patience and strength to sorrowful people

So that they won't get overpowered by the problems of Life

Provide Protection to the powerless

So that they live happily

Give vigour to our devotion

SWAMI VIVEKANANDA ON LORD KRISHNA

The next is He who is worshipped in various forms, the favourite ideal of men as well as of women, the ideal of children, as well as of grown-up men. I mean He whom the writer of the Bhagavata was not content to call an Incarnation but says, "The other Incarnations were but parts of the Lord. He, Krishna, was the Lord Himself." And it is not strange that such adjectives are applied to him when we marvel at the many-sidedness of his character. He was the most wonderful Sannyasin, and the most wonderful householder in one; he had the most wonderful amount of Rajas, power, and was at the same time living in the midst of the most wonderful renunciation. Krishna can never be understood until you have studied the Gita, for he was the embodiment of his own teaching. Every one of these Incarnations came as a living illustration of what they came to preach. Krishna, the preacher of the Gita, was all his life the embodiment of that Song Celestial; he was the great illustration of non-attachment. He gives up his throne and never cares for it. He, the leader of India, at whose word kings come down from their thrones, never wants to be a king. He is the simple Krishna, ever the same Krishna who played with the Gopis. Ah, that most marvellous passage of his life, the most difficult to understand, and which none ought to attempt to understand until he has become perfectly chaste and pure, that most marvellous expansion of love, allegorised and expressed in that beautiful play at Vrindaban, which none can understand but he who has become mad with love, drunk deep of the cup of love! Who can understand the throes of the lore of the Gopis — the very ideal of love, love that wants nothing, love that even does not care for heaven, love that does not care for anything in this world or the world to come? And here, my friends, through this love of the Gopis has been found the only solution of the conflict between the Personal and the Impersonal God. We know how the Personal God is the highest point of human life; we know that it is philosophical to believe in an Impersonal God immanent in the universe, of whom everything is but a manifestation. At the same time our souls hanker after something concrete, something which we want to grasp, at whose feet we can pour out our soul, and so on. The Personal God is therefore the highest conception of human nature. Yet reason stands aghast at such an idea. It is the same old, old question which you find discussed in the Bramha-Sutras, which you find Draupadi discussing with Yudhishthira in the forest: If there is a Personal God, all-merciful, all-powerful, why is the hell of an earth here, why did He create this? — He must be a partial God. There was no solution, and the only solution that can be found is what you read about the love of the Gopis. They hated every adjective that was applied to Krishna; they did not care to know that he was the Lord of creation, they did not care to know that he was almighty, they did not care to know that he was omnipotent, and so forth. The only thing they understood was that he was infinite Love, that was all. The Gopis understood Krishna only as the Krishna of Vrindaban. He, the leader of the hosts, the King of kings, to them was the shepherd, and the shepherd for ever. "I do not want wealth, nor many people, nor do I want learning; no, not even do I want to go to heaven. Let one be born again and again, but Lord, grant me this, that I may have love for Thee, and that for love's sake." A great landmark in the history of religion is here, the ideal of love for love's sake, work for work's sake, duty for duty's sake, and it for the first time fell from the lips of the greatest of Incarnations, Krishna, and for the first time in the history of humanity, upon the soil of India. The religions of fear and of temptations were gone for ever, and in spite of the fear of hell and temptation of enjoyment in heaven, came the grandest of ideals, love for love's sake, duty for duty's sake, work for work's sake.

And what a love! I have told you just now that it is very difficult to understand the love of the Gopis. There are not wanting fools, even in the midst of us, who cannot understand the marvellous significance of that most marvellous of all episodes. There are, let me repeat, impure fools, even born of our blood, who try to shrink from that as if from something impure. To them I have only to say, first make yourselves pure; and you must remember that he who tells the history of the love of the Gopis is none else but Shuka Deva. The historian who records this marvellous love of the Gopis is one who was born pure, the eternally pure Shuka, the son of Vyaasa. So long as there its selfishness in the heart, so long is love of God impossible; it is nothing but shopkeeping: "I give you something; O Lord, you give me something in return"; and says the Lord, "If you do not do this, I will take good care of you when you die. I will roast you all the rest of your lives. perhaps", and so on. So long as such ideas are in the brain, how can one understand the mad throes of the Gopis' love? "O for one, one kiss of those lips! One who has been kissed by Thee, his thirst for Thee increases for ever, all sorrows vanish, and he forgets love for everything else but for Thee and Thee alone." Ay, forget first the love for gold, and name and fame, and for this little trumpery world of ours. Then, only then, you will understand the love of the Gopis, too holy to be attempted without giving up everything, too sacred to be understood until the soul has become perfectly pure. People with ideas of sex, and of money, and of fame, bubbling up every minute in the heart, daring to criticise and understand the love of the Gopis! That is the very essence of the Krishna Incarnation. Even the Gita, the great philosophy itself, does not compare with that madness, for in the Gita the disciple is taught slowly how to walk towards the goal, but here is the madness of enjoyment, the drunkenness of love, where disciples and teachers and teachings and books and all these things have become one; even the ideas of fear, and God, and heaven — everything has been thrown away. What remains is the madness of love. It is forgetfulness of everything, and the lover sees nothing in the world except that Krishna and Krishna alone, when the face of every being becomes a Krishna, when his own face looks like Krishna, when his own soul has become tinged with the Krishna colour. That was the great Krishna!

Do not waste your time upon little details. Take up the framework, the essence of the life. There may be many historical discrepancies, there may be interpolations in the life of Krishna. All these things may be true; but, at the same time, there must have been a basis, a foundation for this new and tremendous departure. Taking the life of any other sage or prophet, we find that that prophet is only the evolution of what had gone before him, we find that that prophet is only preaching the ideas that had been scattered about his own country even in his own times. Great doubts may exist even as to whether that prophet existed or not. But here, I challenge any one to show whether these things, these ideals — work for work's sake, love for love's sake, duty for duty's sake, were not original ideas with Krishna, and as such, there must have been someone with whom these ideas originated. They could not have been borrowed from anybody else. They were not floating about in the atmosphere when Krishna was born. But the Lord Krishna was the first preacher of this; his disciple Vyasa took it up and preached it unto mankind. This is the highest idea to picture. The highest thing we can get out of him is Gopijanavallabha, the Beloved of the Gopis of Vrindaban. When that madness comes in your brain, when you understand the blessed Gopis, then you will understand what love is. When the whole world will vanish, when all other considerations will have died out, when you will become pure-hearted with no other aim, not even the search after Truth, then and then alone will come to you the madness of that love, the strength and the power of that infinite love which the Gopis had, that love for love's sake. That is the goal. When you have got that, you have got everything.
Swami Vivekananda

P.S: Krishna is now a Historical Character, thanks to the marvelous efforts of Marine Archeologist Sri S.R.Rao; whose findings have brought a new perspective on Modern Historians' attitude towards Epics, made them take a re-look into them as credible sources of Histrory, which were earlier thrown into dust-bin/ignored as mere mythological story books.

Swami Vivekananda used to ask this question to religious preachers, “Sir, have you seen God?”. Of course they use to repeat his glories but No one used to give him a positive answer. At last he went to Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, who calmly replied to this question,

"Yes, I see Him as clearly as one sees an apple over the palm; nay, even more intently. And not only this, you can also see Him."

"God can be realized through all paths. All religions are true. The important thing is to reach the roof. You can reach it by stone stairs or by wooden stairs or by bamboo steps or by a rope. You can also climb up by a bamboo pole.

You may say that there are many errors and superstitions in another religion. I should reply: Suppose there are. Every religion has errors. Everyone thinks that his watch alone gives the correct time. It is enough to have yearning for God. It is enough to love Him and feel attracted to Him: Don't you know that God is the Inner Guide? He sees the longing of our heart and the yearning of our soul. Suppose a man has several sons. The older boys address him distinctly as "Baba"or "Papa", but the babies can at best call him "Ba" or "Pa". Now, will the father be angry with those who address him in this indistinct way? The father knows that they too are calling him, only they cannot pronounce his name well. All children are the same to the father. Likewise, the devotees call on God alone, though by different names. They call on one Person only. God is one, but His names are many.

Men often think they have understood God fully. Once an ant went to a hill of sugar. One grain filled its stomach. Taking another grain in its mouth it started homeward. On its way it thought, "Next time I shall carry home the whole hill." That is the way shallow minds think. They don't know that God is beyond one's words and thought. However great a man may be, how much can he know of God? Sukadeva and Sages like him may have been big ants; but even they could carry at the utmost eight or ten grains of sugar!.

As for what has been said in the Vedas and the Puranas, do you know what it is like? Suppose a man has seen the ocean, and somebody asks him, "Well, what is the ocean like?" The first man opens his mouth as wide as he can and says: "What a sight! What tremendous waves and sounds!" The description of God in the sacred books is like that. It is said in the Vedas that God is of the nature of Bliss - It is Satchidananda."

"God is one; as many faiths, so many paths."- Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa

O INDIA! FORGET NOT YOUR IDEALS

This is the ancient land where wisdom made its home before it went into any other country, the same India whose influx of spirituality is represented, as it were, on the material plane, by rolling rivers like oceans, where the eternal Himalayas, rising tier above tier with their snowcaps, look as it were into the very mysteries of heaven. Here is the same India whose soil has been trodden by the feet of the greatest sages that ever lived. Here first sprang up inquiries into the nature of man and into the internal world. Here first arose the doctrines of the immortality of the soul, the existence of a supervising God, an immanent God in nature and in man, and here the highest ideals of religion and philosophy have attained their culminating points. This is the land from whence, like the tidal waves, spirituality and philosophy have again and again rushed out and deluged the world, and this is the land from whence once more such tides must proceed in order to bring life and vigour into the decaying races of mankind. It is the same India which has withstood the shocks of centuries, of hundreds of foreign invasions of hundreds of upheavals of manners and customs. It is the same land which stands firmer than any rock in the world, with its undying vigour, indestructible life. Its life is of the same nature as the soul, without beginning and without end, immortal; and we are the children of such a country.

If there is any land on this earth that can lay claim to be the blessed Punya Bhumi, to be the land to which all souls on this earth must come to account for Karma, the land to which every soul that is wending its way Godward must come to attain its last home, the land where humanity has attained its highest towards gentleness, towards generosity, towards purity, towards calmness, above all, the land of introspection and of spirituality — it is India. Hence have started the founders of religions from the most ancient times, deluging the earth again and again with the pure and perennial waters of spiritual truth. Hence have proceeded the tidal waves of philosophy that have covered the earth, East or West, North or South, and hence again must start the wave which is going to spiritualise the material civilisation of the world. Here is the life-giving water with which must be quenched the burning fire of materialism which is burning the core of the hearts of millions in other lands. Believe me, my friends, this is going to be.

O India! With this mere echoing of others, with this base imitation of others, with this dependence on others this slavish weakness, this vile detestable cruelty — wouldst thou, with these provisions only, scale the highest pinnacle of civilisation and greatness? Wouldst thou attain, by means of thy disgraceful cowardice, that freedom deserved only by the brave and the heroic? O India! Forget not that the ideal of thy womanhood is Sita, Savitri, Damayanti; forget not that the God thou worshippest is the great Ascetic of ascetics, the all-renouncing Shankara, the Lord of Uma; forget not that thy marriage, thy wealth, thy life are not for sense-pleasure, are not for thy individual personal happiness; forget not that thou art born as a sacrifice to the Mother's altar; forget not that thy social order is but the reflex of the Infinite Universal Motherhood; forget not that the lower classes, the ignorant, the poor, the illiterate, the cobbler, the sweeper, are thy flesh and blood, thy brothers. Thou brave one, be bold, take courage, be proud that thou art an Indian, and proudly proclaim, "I am an Indian, every Indian is my brother." Say, "The ignorant Indian, the poor and destitute Indian, the Brahmin Indian, the Pariah Indian, is my brother." Thou, too, clad with but a rag round thy loins proudly proclaim at the top of thy voice: "The Indian is my brother, the Indian is my life, India's gods and goddesses are my God. India's society is the cradle of my infancy, the pleasure-garden of my youth, the sacred heaven, the Varanasi of my old age." Say, brother: "The soil of India is my highest heaven, the good of India is my good," and repeat and pray day and night, "O Thou Lord of Gauri, O Thou Mother of the Universe, vouchsafe manliness unto me! O Thou Mother of Strength, take away my weakness, take away my unmanliness, and make me a Man!"

Higher than Myself there is nothing else, O Dhananjaya (Arjuna). In Me all this is strung like gems in a string. I am, O son of Kunti, sapidity in water, lustre in the moon and the sun, the syllable ‘Om’ in all the Vedas, sound in ether and enterprise in man. Shri Saarangamji,

Thanks for correcting me. Having listened to the song rendered by Sri M.S.Subbalakshmi more than hundred times, i mistook 'Nagaraja'(Lord of Snakes) as 'Nataraja'('King of Dancers'). Saints/Realised souls like Sri Thyagaraja are very broad minded and progressive in their outlook; for them there is no difference between Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu or any other Avatar.

He is indeed wise, who worships Lord Vishnu in Shiva Temple and Lord Shiva in Vishnu Temple, for all are the forms of that one SUPREME REALITY. Of course, this wisdom is given to us by Sri Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya, who gave life-breath to Hinduism by unifying all conflicting sects fighting in the name of God.

My objective behind these posts is to appreciate the kind of intimacy these Bhakthi Saints enjoyed with the God in their imagination, their Supreme love, Intoxicated state, complete Self-surrender of one's self before the Universal Mother - - - .

With Respect and Regards,
Student of V.I.H.E

Dear student of VIHE
From your reply it seems that you have tried to translate the thyAgarAja kR^thi without the proper lyrics.

The anupallavi of the kR^thi is:
nagarAjadhara needu parivArulella
Ogi bodhana jEsEvAralukArEyaTuluNDudurE
The translation for these lines will be:
nagarAja dhara --one who holds the great mountain (here thyAgarAja alludes to
kR^shNa lifting the manthhara giri)
needu parivAruulu ella -- all your fraternity (may be the reference is to the other dEvathas)
Ogi -proper or correct
Ogi bOdhana jEsEvAralukArE --are those who give proper advice
aTulu uNDuthurE --are they not like that?

The golden belt around his waist is studded with gems and jingling bells.

He shines in his beautiful costume.

He is a lovely toddler walking in a crooked way.

He takes delight in performing wonderful acts.

His playful hands are smeared with butter always.

Brahma and other Devatas keep his auspicious feet in their minds.

He is Hari, who dwells on the Holy Venkatachalam.

He is Gopala, The Supreme Lord.

- Sri Annamacharya (15th Century)

"After attaining God one forgets His external splendour; the glories of His creation. One doesn't think of God's glories after one has seen Him. The devotee, once immersed in God's Bliss, doesn't calculate any more about outer things. When I see Narendra, I don't need to ask him: 'What's your name? Where do you live?' Where is the time for such questions?
Once a man asked Hanuman which day of the fortnight it was. 'Brother,' said Hanuman, 'I don't know anything of the day of the week, or the fortnight, or the position of the stars. I think of Rama alone.'"

- Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa

"Do not mix in the fray, hold yourself as a witness and go on working. My master used to say, "Look upon your children as a nurse does". The nurse will take your baby and fondle it and play with it and behave towards it as gently as if it were her own child; but as soon as you give her notice to quit, she is ready to start off. Everything in the space of attachment is forgotten; it will not give the ordinary nurse the least pang to leave your children and take up other children. Even so are you to be with all that you consider as your own. The greatest weakness often insinuates itself as the greatest good and strength. It's a weakness to think that anyone is dependent on me, and that I can do good to another. This belief is the mother of all our attachment, and through this attachment comes all pain. We must inform our mind that no one is dependent on our self. No beggar depends in our charity; not one soul on our kindness. All are helped by the nature, and will be so helped even though millions of us were not here; Only blessed privilege to you and me that we are allowed, in the way of helping others, to educate ourselves. This is a great lesson to learn in life; and when we have learnt it fully, we shall never be unhappy; we can go and mix with the society anywhere and everywhere."
- Swami Vivekananda

"Even if a very wicked person worships Me to the exclusion of anybody else, he should be regarded as righteous, for he has rightly resolved. He quickly becomes righteous and attains lasting peace. O son of Kunti, declare it boldly that My devotee never perishes."
- Bhagawad Gita
