Thank you for the information which refreshes the mind. I have a doubt or I would like to know whether the Kalasams have embedded lightning arrester or something else to serve the purpose. If they do not have, there is a possibility of many gopurams having been affected or damaged. Though top damaged temples which abound only in TN, are seen have they been reported as such. Moreover, the intensity and frequency of the lightening is more over western coast (during onset of s.w. monsoon) and it is less pronounced during n.e. monsoon. To add to information, if science can only capture one lightening live, it can run the entire energy system including lighting, motive power, etc. for at least 15 minutes in the world. The power of nature indeed.

Surely there must have been some kind of system to safely earth the

lightnings. Otherwise the temple gopuram would have blown up!

Our ancestors knew more than we give them credit for!

The energy of the lightnings can be used-as you had said-to solve the

energy crisis. But how to harness the intense short bursts of

energy-which can cause damage more easily than be used for

constructive purposes- poses to be the greatest problem.

If any method is evolved, the way the explosive atomic energy is made

safe under controlled conditions of an atomic power plant, then

lightning will become a blessing in the form of free energy from heaven to

earth. Till then ... it will be more of a foe than a friend!

Ok going by the lightning conductor theory of Gopurams..what about countries which dont really have a Gopuram structure of worship ..does lightning strike everywhere then?
May be Gopuram styled building started off as some sort of Vasthu to channel the Cosmic Prana to be transmitted to the general public who visit the temple and also from a practical point of view a real high Gopuram is visible to everyone to remind us of our Kartavyam of prayer..(like a visible call of prayer).

Namaste madam!

Welcome back to active participation!

All the churches have a long needle like structure/or a tall cross on the

top of the cathedrals.

The Muslim tramples may have the crescent moon providing the

necessary spikes for conducting lightning to earth harmlessly.

The reason given by you is a good one too! A visible call to remember

God and pray to Him. Also God must be placed above mere mortals!

That may explain the shape of the Gopuram but not the kalasam!

The Gopurams of the temples in North India have a more or less

square cross section. They are devoid of the eye capturing sculpture the

Southern temples are famous for!

In fact even the flag staff in a temple may be a kind of lightning

conductor.

As I said, we have not fully realized the greatness and wisdom

of our ancestors.

with warm regards,
Visalakshi Ramani :pray2:

Dear friends!

I checked up the Google images of churches, cathedrals and mosques

( after the power cut from 12 noon to 3 P.M.)

They all have tall pillar-like structures (or domes) but they all invariably end in

needle thin extensions high in the sky!

So all the three religions agree in one point...the need for having spikes on the top

of their places of worship.

Impressive! isn't it ? :thumb:

STRANGE BUT TRUE.

Jewel made by air and water!

Billions of snow crystals fall from the sky. Each of them has a flawless hexagonal

design - resembling a pretty piece of platinum and diamond jewelry!

But no two are identical! Hard to believe? But it is true!

Due to the crystallization of water vapor in the air into geometric forms, the shape

of the crystal formed depends on the temperature of the air.

Crystals in the shape of needles and rods are formed in the cooler and higher

altitudes where the water vapor is scarce. Complex and beautiful hexagonal

crystals are formed in the warmer and lower altitudes, where water vapor is

abundant.

Snow flakes are formed when these crystals fall into warm lower atmosphere -

melt partly and bunch together.

STRANGE BUT TRUE.

Snow can speak!

The snow on the ground can 'speak'!

A trained person can guess correctly the temperature of the air by listening to the

snow!

If the snow makes a deep crunching sound underfoot, it just slightly below zero C.

At (-) 5 C the snow creaks at a higher pitch.

At (-) 15 C, the speech of the snow resembles the high notes, unpleasantly played

on a violin, by a novice!

A frost makes a sound resembling the scraping of a knife on a plate.

A pitch for each temperature? Music in the making?

Hailstones.

A hailstone is formed on the ice crystal, when more and more water

vapor condenses on it - using it as a nucleus.

The up droughts carry the hailstone several times across the freezing zone.

More and more layers of ice are are formed on it resembling the layers of an onion.

When the hailstone becomes too heavy to be carried by the up droughts,

it drops under its own weight.

A Hailstorm can damage fields, crops and properties very badly.

Farmers in Italy use firework rockets to disperse the potential hailstorms clouds

and shatter the hailstones before the fall to earth.

One of the strangest monuments commemorate the fierce hailstorm which

occurred on 3rd July in 1883.

The inscription reads:-

In memory of the great hailstorm at Barton July 3rd, 1883, 10- 30 P.M to 11 P.M.

Ice 5" long, 3" wide

Ice weight 2 and 1/2 ounces.

Tons of glass broken.

Figure skating.

The finest form of dancing and gymnastics is combined in figure skating.

Watching a performance by the world class artists/athletes can be the

most relaxing visual experience.

But how do they do it on a slippery, hard, cold surface of snow?

The skaters wear special shoes which have sharp knife edges at the

bottom of the shoes.

A person can't walk on and on those shoes even on land,

Yet they make the most eye catching performance on snow possible !

Water has a unique property. When a pressure is applied on ice its

melting point decreases!

The normal melting point of ice is zero C.

But when a pressure is applied it reduces below zero C.

So the ice at zero C is itself at a higher temperature than the new reduced

melting point.

So a layer of ice melts forming a water which allows the skater to skid

along. Once the pressure is released the water freezes back to ice at 0 C.

The weight of the person provides the necessary pressure and ensures

that there is always a thin layer of water under the skater's feet.

That makes this impressive performance possible!

Laws of limits of size ( part # 1 )

In Science Fiction we come across giant ants, spiders and many other

insects and animals.

The are pictured as the products of genetic mutations and modifications.

But mercifully the size of every living creature on earth is limited by

immutable laws!

Producing an ant the size of a horse or a man the size of mouse will

create new problems for these weird creatures by altering the ratio of

their body mass and surface area.

This example will make it clear!

When the side of a cube is doubled, its volume and mass increase

eightfold.

(Original volume was a x a x a and the new volume is 2a x 2a x 2a)

But its surface area increases only four times.

(original surface area was 6 x a x a; the new surface area is 6 x 2a x 2a )

So the rate of heat lost through the skin will be halved (4/8 = 1/2)!

Such a change will result in overheating of the body.

Conversely if the size is halved, the body heat will be lost twice as fast!

The tiny birds have very little body mass compared to the body surface

area. They do not freeze in the cold mainly because they have a warm

coat of feathers and spend their entire lives eating high energy food!

Strange but true

Laws of limits of size ( part # 2 )

Large animals conserve body heat better than the smaller ones. A polar

bear living in the ice cold atmosphere stands 11 feet tall and weighs up to

600 pounds. It is nearly twice as tall and 6 times as heavy as the

Himalayan black bear.

Bulky animals which live in hot climates (elephants and rhinoceros)

plaster their body with cool mud or wallow in water

(buffaloes and hippopotamus) to get rid of the excess body heat.

An ant has no lungs! The oxygen reaches the air sac through tiny holes in

the body called Spiracles.

An ant as big as a horse will need a hurricane wind to force the air from

the spiracles to the internal tissues.

The ant's shell will have to thicken to withstand such an enormous

pressure.

It may become so heavy that it will the crush the body of the ant it was

supposed to protect!

The massive animals have another major problem..finding sufficient

food. The largest living animal - the 100 ton blue whale - needs 4 tons of

food per day!

No creature with an insufficient food supply can ever grow to such a size

and mass!

In advanced countries people make sure that all tall buildings and skyscrapers

have lightning conductors.

About India, you must be knowing better than me! :)

Strange but true!

If it moves, it is mother!

Konrad Lorenz was a Vietnamese Zoologist, animal psychologist, ornithologist and a Nobel Laurette. He is the one of the founders of Modern Ethology. His field of research was the instinctive behavior in animals - especially the
geese and jackdaws.

He studied the behavior of newly hatched ducks and geese. He found that a gray lag goose-ling will adopt as its mother , the first moving object it happens to see, after hatching. It will follow its 'mother' everywhere!

Lorenz's goose-lings had adopted various mother substitutes including an Alsatian dog, a ball and a block of wood.

Ducklings react to sounds. Young mallards showed fear for anything other than an adult mallard-unless the call of the mallard was imitated.

Strange but true!

Snail egg and blood grouping.

A garden snail lays about 30 eggs a year.

Each egg is of the size of a large pinhead and each egg is a potential life saver.

HOW?

The snail egg is a cheap and readily available source of one particular chemical -

used in determining the blood groups.

Normally this chemical is extracted from human blood.

But single snail contains as much of this chemical as can be extracted

from the blood of five adult donors!

The contents of the snail eggs are extracted and dissolved in a saline solution before using.

The slimy snails may be unwelcome in any home or garden,

but they are welcomed in the medical field as potential life savors!

Small and insignificant creatures doing yeomen service in medicine!

Lakes of Satan (part # 1)

Mirages are usually associated with deserts, but they can happen

practically anywhere in the world.

Mirages occur when the layers of air at different temperatures and

different densities are superimposed!

The light rays refract and get bent more and more as they pass through

these different layers at different densities.

The result is that we can see the images of objects far beyond the

horizon, as a result of a phenomenon called Total Internal reflection.

Once a critical value is reached, the refraction changes to reflection just

as in a plane mirror.

The rays from the far away object which can't be seen by us directly,

form images very real and very near to us.

Strange but true!

Lakes of Satan (part # 2)

In the deserts, thirsty men have been driven mad by the sight of

shimmering lakes that can never be reached; as they kept moving farther

and farther away as the men tried to go nearer and nearer to them.

The Arabs call these as "Lakes Of Satan".

Mirages have played vital role in many wars and battles.

In 1798, Napoleon's army in Egypt saw a muddled landscape that

vanished and blades of grass that became palm tress.

So confused were the soldiers that they fell on their knees and prayed for

deliverance from the seeming 'end of the world'.

Gunners of British Artillery had to stop firing during their desert campaign

in the World Wat I, when a false landscape completely blotted out their

enemy position.

A German submarine captain saw the city of New York hovering above

him, as seen through the periscope.

He made a hasty retreat!

Birth of a hurricane.

A hurricane is a powerful spiraling storm that begins over a warm sea, near the equator. When it hits the land, it can cause more damage than any other natural calamity-by killing more people and destroying more property.

It exhibits in the forms of fierce winds, torrential rains, inland flooding and huge crashing waves.

Can you believe that an average hurricane releases as much energy as the combined effect many atomic explosions?

The power output per minute can supply electricity to the entire U.S.A for a period of 50 years! But the problem is that a hurricane cannot be harnessed or controlled!

A hurricane is created at sea.The water temperature must be more than 27 degree C. The warm sea creates a funnel of air which rises to 40,000 feet, producing vast cumulus clouds.

High air currents are distributed and more air from below is drawn into the funnel. The rotation of the earth adds a twist to the funnel and a hurricane is born. A mass of air 400 miles in diameter and whirling at 200 m.p.h or even more!

Hurricanes are constantly recharged at sea. But on land, its source of power is cut off. Hurricanes can rarely last for more than a day on land.

Tornadoes.

The terrible tornado is a wild cousin of the hurricane-operating on a smaller scale.Tornado can spring up without any warning. It lasts for less than an hour. The winds are so fierce that buildings collapse, tress get uprooted and trains overturn!

The winds at the outer end of the tornado may reach up to 500 m.p.h! Tornadoes occur on hot humid days. They are funnel clouds which start rotating gently first and than fiercely. The funnel travels at 25 to 40 m.p.h.

In the center air surges at 100 to 200 m.p.h. It has enough suction power to drag in objects as big and heavy as motor cars. The wooden houses which are sucked in, spin at the top and fly out again, completely broken.

Man might have conquered Space and landed on moon, but he is completely powerless when confronted by hurricanes, tornadoes not to speak of tidal waves.

Hello Visalakshi,

I would like to know your thoughts on the Lead vessel (Eiya pathram) being used for making Rasam. From what you have mentioned about slow poisioning in Rome, the same should apply for this too!! can you please clarify.

Hello newbie Sir / Ma'm!

For your info..........

Better add Smt as prefix or ma'm as suffix when you address a senior lady in this forum!

Raji Ram

Dear DUS3,
There is an old thread 'EYA SOMBHU' where many members have recorded their views. Please go through that thread.
Please follow the advice of Smt.Raji Ram while addressing elderly ladies of this FORUM.
If you are very familiar with a person, perhaps you may address them with their first name.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Extremely sorry for addressing the way i did. I assure it was a slip and definitely not intentional. However no excuses and my sincere apologies to Smt.Visalakshi.

Warm Regards,

Hi newbie Sir / Madam DUS3,

Still do not get your name... Sorry!

Anyway, thanks for taking my comment in the right spirit!
