Sabyasachi Mukherjee defends Vidya's Cannes look, says respect not glamour was his brief Vidya Balan's look at Cannes this year has raised eyebrows and enflamed opinions on an extreme scale. While most felt it overdosed on desi exotica, the man behind the look, Sabyasachi Mukherjee, will have none of it.

"You want my point of view? I have already put it on the red carpet in Cannes," the designer told Mirror from London. "India is divided into two major parts: One that embraces cultural heritage, the other is looking for newness. I don't mind opinions. We live in a democratic country. Meanwhile, the fashion fraternity rallied behind Vidya, Sabya, and stylist Jayati Bose. "Vidya is looking fine in Cannes," said designer Anna Singh. "Rekha has worn sarees for more than four decades to almost every place where she goes. Have you seen Hema Malini donning any other garb since the longest time? Vidya is the authentic face of our country and we want her to wear international gowns! Gosh!"

?Only aunties wear sarees? Ridiculous!? - The Times of India

Any woman 30+ and married is legally an aunty. :moony:

Whoever would drape a lady from head to toe
(with a full sleeves blouse too)
in the same shade of red as the red carpet???

Scarlet red is shocking by itself. :fear:

It was danger signal red! red! red! everywhere
and my eyes craved for any color to break the monotony.

Ash, Vidya and many others are aunties -
whether or not they like to be called so!

It is both the age and the size of the lady
which decide who is officially an aunty.

When we see very obese girls we say immediately,
"She already looks like a mami!"

Mami = Aunty (for those who do not know Tamil)

Married and with kids and 30+ in age,
and imagining themselves to be teenagers!!!

The really ridiculous thing is that
EVEN mamis do not prefer to wear saris now
unless the occasion and the country demand it. :mmph:

come on visa, not in this day and age.

30+ and married = mami?

i know 50++ who look gorgeous enough, that even 'aunty' is an embarassment; 'young lady' is a more appropriate term :)

as we grow older, i find, the world getting younger.

my daughter 23 wears sari, and looks like a mature teenager. mrs K looks better than even vidya balan. and vidya is good competition any day. none of these would qualify for 'mamis'.

madam, even though i am not adam, i beg to disagree :)

Dear Srimathi VR Ji Madam,

Red everywhere or not, I am a sucker for a saree clad lady's looks. To me, beauty to the eye of a beholder, no other attire in any culture in the entire globe projects the full range of a woman's attributes: sexuality, modesty, royalty, purity, beauty, mystery and above all and understated glory than a saree. Whenever my wife dons a saree, like Sri Kunjuppu Ji, I go ape :).

'Red on red'? Yeah, but a minor point.

Regards,
KRS

I agree with KRS sir. The saree is ethereal, and the ultimate in sexuality and purity at the same time (a heady combo). Makes anyone beautiful imo; and a beautiful person even more beautiful.

right on pali...

a sari is a true socialist...thin or fat, young or old, black or white, .. the sari makes all of these look elegant and admirable...

had karl marx heard of the sari, he would have not called socialsm, 'socialism', but 'sari-ism' :)

Even the barrel like women who look clumsy in pant shirts / churidhars look good if clad in a saree!

All the white women who attended our brother-in-law's son's wedding wanted to drape themselves

in sarees and they were happy with their gorgeous looks - took many photos too! :thumb:

I love sarees...it is the sexiest garment ever.

Wearing saree does not make one an aunty but the problem is Vidya Balan looks like an aunty to start with!LOL

Will write more tomorrow...its a Public Holiday here for Buddha Jayanti.

BTW Vidya Balan was truly an ethnic overdose at Cannes.

She should have picked up a few points from Nandita Das who had worn a Saree to Cannes in 2012..Nandita was elegant and classy.

Vidya looked as if a Hurricane of Ethnic Disaster had befallen her.

Check out Nandita..classy and elegant while still being Indian.

One of my South Korean friend commented that in South Korea, Indian saree is perceived as obscene since it exposes the curve.

The South Korean women's dress exposes only the part below the knee which is perceived obscene in India.

Discernibly, that which is common is not obscene since it is common.

Obscenity is apparently a matter of perception.

This is because women do NOT wear the saree as M S amma for example!

Have a look at these ethnic sarees in the following link:

Gagra Type Designer

The dress which once upon a time made people  now invites

P.S: I like Sushmaji's style! :thumb:

One honest and genuine doubt...

Can a teenager call YOU as mama
or is that also equally outrageous???

OK which word will describe Ash and Vidya
other than the young lady???

I guess the upper limit of youth has
crossed beyond the lower limit of middle age!!!

Mr. kunjuppu,
You have given one more reason for the men in the forum
to see you with ever-green-eyes (green for jealousy)
by disclosing that your ever-green-mam is a
competitor to Vidya Balan with an advantage! :)
Happy and pampered people remain young.
The unhappy ones become Avviyar either
by choice or by compulsion.

...OR is there no middle age nowadays???

Is it just youth followed by old age??? :noidea:

Sari since she is proud to wear one,
waist coat to beat the cold of Delhi(???)
and the shawl for belonging to B.J.P!!!

I beg to differ. :nono:
'What is common' are both
"the shame shame" and
"the same same" and are
hidden/covered by most people.
Thank Heavens for the small mercies. :hail:

dear sir,

You too missed the point. :pout:

Reading your post, anyone will imagine that I am an anti-sari aunty/paatti. :nono:

I am not. I wish that the others are not anti-sari too!

You may see in my photos that I went to USA and stayed there for ~ 6 months, six times so far, wearing NOTHING but our traditional costumes of sari with its proper accessories.

ONLY while traveling I wear a salwar suit since the sari comes off loose every time I happen to step on my pleats.

And we have to walk long distances, climb staircases etc to board or alight from the flight, at times.

I have my own group of admirers there - even though I am not young any more and I stand no comparisons with Vidya Balan or Mrs. K or
Mrs. K.R.S!!! or any other celebrity.

It NEED NOT have been a red on red. It could have been a white/ gold/ sky blue/ pastel green/ or one of many other accent colors, which would have made Vidya Balan appear even more beautiful and traditional.

I get upset when I find prune faced mamis wearing chudhidars to swamiji's lectures and while visiting the temples in INDIA.

I can understand some other person missing the salient points in my post, but I never thought you too will miss it!

P.S:
May be just to make Mr. V.R go gaga, I must stop wearing sari everyday and make it as rare as a full moon or a blue moon or an annular ecipse!

I have written several times before that
a sari can HIDE many ugly bulges and
a sari can accentuate many lovely curves.
Please do not project me as an anti-sari-mami.
I AM NOT ONE!!! :nono:

Naturally! They are slimmer, taller and long legged.
They will look like devathai or diva in sarees!

Thank you dear Renu!
Yes Nandita does look like an innocent south Indian bride!

renu,

i disagree with you re vidya balan 'looks like an aunty to start with'. . she definitely looked virginal in parineeta, and looked whorish the dirty picture. she is a chameleon who can assume any 'look' she wants..

having said that, i agree, that in cannes, she looked dowdy. she relies too much on sabasachi the designer. she should have opted for kanjeevaram or mysore silks. in contrast bombay jayashree looked real class at the oscars

but look at those perfect teeth :)
