Sthalam: Tharamangalam
Swamy: Shri Kailasanadhar
Ambal: Shri Sivagamasundari

Constructed by: Ketti mudaliyar (a local king) in 13th century.

Hi,
This Tharamangalam temple is unique.. The temple is right opposite the bus station. An impressive 5-tiered gopuram greets you. In this temple from the main gopuram you have to get down steps to reach the temple praharam. Such type of entrance is available only in two temples in TN. When you see the Gopuram from inside it looks like two elephants hauling the gopuram. Stalapuranam says that the two elepants are the one, which helped during the construction of this temple, so in the memory of these elephants the king ordered to provide these stone elephants. The inner courtyard is spacious. A pillared corridor surrounds the courtyard. A nandi shirne stands before the main temple.

Entering the temple you will notice the following features:

· two subsidiary shrines face the main shrine. It is the latter that create a central passage towards the main shrine. I found this scheme to be unique, not seen by me in any temple in Karnataka. Incidentally, this is the first temple I am studying closely as I begin my tour of Tamil Nadu.
· on the left corner of the inner prahara has a small underground cave or an underground chamber and antechamber with a stone door, which can be accessed by a few steps, which leads us to a spacious shrine of paadhaala lingam (UNDERGROUND LINGA). It is a small stone linga, Just bigger than one’s thumb. We can be sure it’s a linga because it stands on a substantial peeta.
· Here the specialty is Swamy shrine is facing towards west and the Ambal shrine is facing towards east just like a Bride and Broom exchanging their wedding garland.
· just above the Swamy shrine a fantastic sculpture, which depicts the reason for the name Tharamangalam (Tharai + Mangalam), its narrates the marriage of shiva and parvathi, as Mahavishnu handing over Parvathi to Shiva (Tharam varthal). The other main shrine is of Shri Subramanyar.
· the space between these three shrines has a fascinating ceiling. A stone wheel ringed with pecking stone parrots is the highlight. It is claimed that the wheel can be freely rotated. Chains, probably of stone too, hang from the same ceiling.
· the main shrine stands at a level slightly below the level of the pradakshina patha. A well stands next to the main shrine at the same level.
· the ambulatory is full of interesting sculptures of gods, goddesses and saints. I admired greatly the figures of Rathi and Manmatha. There is an 18-armed sculpture of Nataraja, excellent by its own merit but not surpassing that of Badami Caves. Included among the saints are the 63 Nayanmars and 4 Nalvars. These are not sculptures for the sake of art alone. The temple is in active use. The sculptures glisten at times in oil. They are often decorated with vermilion and lamps burn in offering before them.

It is the pillars that deserve separate praise. Looking at the details, they are exquisitely carved. Looking at the overall arrangment, they are harmonious. They are formal but not rigid. Each pillar is essentially of a square base with octogonal or 16-sided sections or bands. In every section are carvings in bas-relief. This basic pillar is joined to a much slender pillar by latticed stonework. These two form a composite pillar. At the corners, three such slender pillars together with the primary pillar form the composite pillar. The slender secondary pillars are not just ornamental. They support the overhanging stonework that rises gracefully towards the capital. On some pillars, elephants, horses and lions are beautifully carved. Yalis, or mythical lions, are carved on some pillars. It is said that stone balls in their mouths can be freely rolled.

Tamil Nadu is full of magnificent temples. In the grand scheme of things, no one even notices this temple at Tharamangalam. Most people would not even have heard of this temple unless he/she has passed by this region.

I would like to show u all the only image of Tharamangalam Sri Kailasanadhar Temple available in net ...

Vijaymahadevan.

Dear Vijaymahadevan

Simply superb... A very nice pic too. The speciality of radhi--manmadan sculptures in that temple is you cannot see the manmadan sirpam from anywhere in the temple. Only from the radi's sculpture we can see the manmadan. (Am I right sir?? I heard that only. Not yet visited that temple).

STHALAM: THIRUNANGUR
SWAMI: MATHANGEESWARAR
AMBAL: Mathangi

Legend: Sage mathanga did his penance in this place and got uma as his daughter. Swami from thiruvenkadu (Swetharanyeswarar) came here and married shri mathangi and they both went to thiruvenkadu (There she is known as Brahmavidhyamba). This is the main rudra kshetra surrounded by 11 other rudra kshetras (Ekadasa rudra kshetrams) (Hrudhaya kshetra for ekadasa rudra kshetras).

A CONFLICT: It is said that, in order to get the darshan of these ekadasa rudras only, perumal has landed himself in ekadasa kshetrams (NANGUR EKADASA DIVYA DESANGAL). At the sametime, vaishnavaites are saying that inorder to see perumal only rudra came here and sitted in these eleven temples. It is like that of natarajar and govindaraja perumal story. Anyhow, there are 11+11=22 temples nearby Thirunangur.

Nangur temple is located in a remote part of the village. Almost, isolated. The temple is very small. But lord mathangeeswara is like a tanjore linga. (Big in size).

Speciality: The most special thing in this temple is the "DUAL NANDI". There are two nandis on the outer prakara in the same peetam. One nandi faces mathangeeswara, whereas the other faces "Thiruvenkadu" (It is the nandi of swetharanyeswara).

One more speciality is also there. That is the kshetra kali (Wooden kali idol) in the temple. The entrance of the shrine where the kali is residing is very small than the size of kali. But, every year they will take the idol out for procession (an amazing thing).

SAD POINT: Most of us will think of "Nangur" only as vishnu temples. Since the temple is also located totally out of the reach, many of the visitors miss this.

GOOD POINT: The gurukkal of the temple is residing adjacent to the temple. So, he will make you to get good darshan. Might be if you go there, you alone will be the visitor (When I went he said like that only- Might be in a month only 2-3 visitors may come there it seems). Luckily when I went, it was a sani pradosham. I had good darshan there.

ROUTE: You can go from Sirkali to thriunangur.Thirunangur is a pakka remote village. Dont expect anything here. Get down at sivan temple stop. You have to walk a long way. If going by car, enquire there and you can easily trace the temple.

I will mention the ekadasa rudra temples in next post.

Sthalam: Pallavaneeswaram
Swami: Pallavaneswarar
Ambal: Soundarya nayagi

Route: Very near to chayavanam. In the same route Sirkazhi-poompuhar. It is very near to poompuhar.

There is a separate shrine to Sambaapathi Amman, which is believed to have been worshipped by Madhavi and Manimekalai of the Sangam epics. There is also an image of Subramaniar, said to have been recovered from the ocean. It is believed locally that this image is that of Subramaniar at Tiruchendur, which is said to have been carried away by Dutch sailors in 1648.

There is also a separate shrine for Pattinathaar here. Temple itself is known as "Pattinathar temple".

Sthalam: Thiruveezhimizhalai
Swami: Veezhinathar, Veezhiazhagar, Nethrarpaneswarar
Ambal: Brihatsundarakuchamba (Azhagiyavanmulaiammai), Kathyayani

Legend: Parvati is said to have been reborn as Katyayani and married Shiva here. Vishnu received Chakrayudam from Shiva here in lieu of the 1000 flower worship to Shiva. Once due to the reduction of a lotus flower in the count, Vishnu plucked one of his his eyes and did archana considering it as lotus flower. A panel depicting the divine marriage is seen behind the Shivalingam. The Moolvar vimanam is believed to be brought to here by Mahavishnu.

When Appar and Sambandar visit this place, there was a severe drought all around. They prayed to Lord Shiva who gave Padikasu (Gold Coin) one each every day to both of them. Sambandar gets Padikasu at the Pedam in front of Mahamandapam. Navukarasar gets gold coin in the Pedam in Merkku (west) Pragaram. Using these gold coins, they offered food to the needy people. (In that sambandar got gold coins of more value and appar got coins of bit less value it seems).

Special Deity: MAPPILAI SWAMY
This special idol of swami and ambal is known as "mappilai swamy". (Swami in bridal form). Swami and ambal were seen in this idol as newly married couples. This temple is also known as "Marriage Sthala".

Route: In the Mayiladuthurai--Thiruvarur route, as usual get down at Poonthotam. From there, Poonthotam--Nachiarkoil (Get down at Thenkarai stop). From there a 5 min walk is required to reach the temple.

The temple is very big and there are so many special things to see (morning visit is advisable). A padhala nandhi is also there. It is also in a type of "Mada kovil". This sthalam was sung by all the three saints (Appar-sundarar-sambandar)

Sthalam: Thiru Eengoimalai
Swami: Maragathachaleswarar
Ambal: Maragathavalli

Legend: This temple is located in the vicinity of Trichy. Visiting Kadambar koil, Ratnagiri and Tiruveengoimalai on the same day is of significance. This is one of the 3 sikharams (mountains) in the Tiruchirappalli area, associated with characters from the Ramayanam (Karan, Dhooshanan and Tirisiran) - the other two being Trichy and Tiruverumbur. Legend has it that Agasthyar assumed the form of a housefly, to fly past the waiting thousands, to worship Shiva, hence the name Eengoimalai. : This Shivastalam is a hill temple with over 500 steps. The temple has been designed in such a manner that the sun's rays fall on the Maragata lingam on Sivaratri in the month of Masi, & the lingam emits different hues of colour.

Caution: The hill steps are so steep. Start before scorching sunlight. The hill is plain with rocks and hence, we cannot expect usual coolness while walking.

Good thing: An interesting view of aganda cauvery is seen from the hill.

Other importance: Very nearby in the foothills is the "Chayapeedam" of shri lalithamba (One of the 51 shakthi peedams). The whole temple is maintained by yogini ladies (Brahmacharinis).

Route: It is near Kulithalai (Trichy). The temple is located in village. Dont expect anything there. But at shakti peeta temple, brahmacharinis are serving devotees with grace (They provided us coffee and snacks when we went).

***Plan well before going here. This is entirely in an isolated route. Get snacks, water, etc with you.

Sthalam: Ambar Perunthirukovil
Swami: Brahmapuriswarar
Ambal: Poonkuzhali

Route: This temple is located 3 Kms from Poonthottam (Mayiladuthurai--thiruvarur route)Bazaar. Poonthottam is 16 Kms from Tiruvarur. Another paadal petra sivasthalam Ambar Maakaalam is situated 1 Km from here on the west direction.

Shrines: There is a shrine for Vinayakar who is known as Padikkasu Pulliar. Other shrines are for Paathaleswarar on the north side and Punnagavareswarar under the Punnai tree.

Legend:
Legend has it that the demons Amban and Ambaran were vanquished by Kaali here. Kaali took the form of an enchantress, accompanied by Vishnu in the guise of an old man and through chicanery caused Amban to kill Ambaran, and then devoured Amban herself. To rid herself of the sin of having killed, she prayed to Shiva here, hence the name Ambar Maakalam.
Vishnu in the form of Veetrirunda Perumaal is worshipped in a shrine nearby. There is an image of Kali the enchantress in the Vishnu temple. Shiva is said to have appeared as a Chandala in a yagnam conducted by Somaasi Maaranaar. Sundaramoorthy Nayanar is said to have attended this sacrifice.. This event is commemorated in the month of Vaikasi - Ayilyam.

Note: It is a very remote village. Minibus facility is there. Dont expect anything (even a hotel). Visit the temple in morning or before 7 in evening.

Sthalam: Maandurai
Swami: Ambiravananathar
Ambal: Azhagal Uyarnda Ammai

Route: This temple is located 3 Kms from Lalgudi towards Tiruchy. Frequent bus services between Tiruchy and Lalgudi are available.

Note: Though it is a village, it is very near to lalgudi and also trcihy (Srirangam & thiruvanaikka), so you can get everything from there. But dont expect anything on the temple locality.

Legend: Surya, Chandra, Kanvar and Vishnu are said to have worshipped Shiva here. Mrikandu Munivar (father of Markandeya) and a deer are said to have worshipped Shiva under a mango tree, and this legend is illustrated in stucco in the temple.
Bhrama is said to have brought the Gayatri Nadi at the completion of his worship here, and his act of having made the false claim of having seen the top of the column of fire in which Shiva had manifested himself, was absolved here.
Indra is said to have worshipped Shiva to absolve himself of the sin of having deceived Akalya, the wife of Gowtama Rishi. Bhrama and Vishnu adorn the niches in the walls of the sanctum. Inscriptions from the Chola period are seen in this temple.
A brahmin by birth who did "panchamaapadhaga" got resolved from his sin after worshipping this swami.

Sthalam: Thiru Sivapuram
Swami: Sivapuranathar
Ambal: Singaravalli

Route: 5 km from Kumabakonam. Minibus facility is there.

Legend:
Bhrama is said to have worshipped Shiva here before he undertook his task of creation. It is also said that Vishnu in his Varaaha Avataram (Boar) worshipped Shiva here. Carvings of these 2 legends can be seen in the walls of this temple.

A very small temple with only the shrines of swami and ambal as heart of the temple.

NOTE: A very calm and natural village. Dont expect anything. Since, Kumbakonam is near-by, you can get all facilities there itself.

Sthalam: ThiruPainjeeli
Swami: Neelivananathar
Ambal: Visalakashi
Vriksham: Vaazhai

Legend: Shiva is said to have blessed Vasishtar with a vision of the cosmic dance and the dance hall here is known as Ratna Sabha. Shiva is said to have blessed Tirunavukkarasar (who had arrived from Tirupachilasramam with a sumptuous meal on a banana leaf (Painneeli - Vaazhai). It is here that Yama is believed to have worshipped Shiva, to retrieve his power over mortal souls, after Shiva vanquished his powers at Tirukadavur in saving Markandeyan.

There are 2 shrines to Ambaal here. There are no navagrahams here, only 9 pits adjacent to the Dwajasthampam. The vast tank to the north of the temple is the Deva Theertham, while the Vishala Theertham is a well (This is located inside the temple infront of ambal shrine). There is a shrine to Yama in the third prakaram.

Route: This temple is located 20 km away from Tiruchirappalli & about 5 km from Bhikshandar Kovil.

Specialities: This is a "Marriage Prarthana Sthalam"
Yama Shrine
9grahas in 9 pits
2 ambals

When Appar came this temple, it was mid noon and the temple doors were locked. So, he took rest outside the temple. At the same time, he felt much hungry. Shiva himself came as a oldman and served appar a good lunch. So, doing "Annadhanam" is considered very special in this temple.

Sthalam: MAVOOTHU
Deity: Murugan (VELAPPAR)
Route: This temple is located near Andipatti, in Madurai district.

It is in the midst of mountains and is reachable by climbing some 300 steps. The Main deity is lord Muruga and the temple is also called Mavuthu Velappar Temple. The pooja is still conducted by the Paliyars. The temple is by the side of stream. The specialty is that, the water comes out as a natural spring from among the roots of the mango trees and forms into a stream. That is why it is called Mavuthu. Ma stands for mango in Tamil and Uthu refers to the spring in Tamil.

There will be only the shrine of this velappa swami in the temple. The stream will be of natural beauty and is considered holy.

Also places like suruli falls, kumbakarai falls, sothuparai dam, are all nearby to enjoy the holidays... Mavuthu is much a village and wont get anything there. Also, there will be lot of guide disturbances. You can get any sort of info from people there itself. No need of guide and all.

Sthalam: Thriukadavur Mayaanam
Swami: Brahmapureeswarar
Ambal: Nimalakusambigai

Location: It is very near to the famous "Thirukadaiyur Abirami temple" (2 kms).

Legend: In this temple only margandeya did penance and got the blessing of shiva. This temple is very old and is said to be worshipped by brahma. All the three thevara mudalis have sung this temple.

Note: The nearby abhirami-amirthakateswara temple will be filled with crowd and always we should be rushed to a quick darshan. This temple stands very calm and at the sametime energetic.

Famous Murugan temple Thiruvidaikazhi is also nearby.

Sthalam: Thirusoolam
Swami: Thirusoolanathar
Ambal: Thirupurasundari

Route: The temple is located near Thirusoolam (Chennai Meenambakkam Airport). After crossing the railway track from Thirusoolam, we can reach the village.

Special Dieties: Though the temple is old, I couldn't get any legends related to this.

But there are so many special deities which we cannot see in other temples. Let we start with Ganesha.

1. Nagayagnopaveetha ganapathy- We heard the name of ganapathy in asthothram. But we can see the ganapathy here.

2. Veerasana Dakshinamoorthy- This even we couldn't hear. The dakshinamoorthy is very charm. A nice sitting posture in veerasana. It means his left leg will be placed in the seat itself but not in the folded form.

3. Durgadevi- The durgadevi here is in the auspicious form called as "Thribangi". It means folded in three parts (like meenakshi amman).

4. The amman thripurasundari is like of chola-type. (I.e. in her two hands she is carrying a lotus and japa-mala, instead of usual pallava-type, where you can see Paasa-angusa)

5. A spacious navagraha shrine (infact I never visited such big shrine for navagraha anywhere) with huge sized 9grahas.

Although the temple is located even within the chennai limits, most of us are unaware of this temple. Even persons may wonder whether such a quiet village is there within the Chennai locality. Hence I request every chennai reader to visit this treasurous temple atleast once.

Pranams

Adada, how many times I have touched Thirisoolam station? I have not visited this temple, as I have not heard about it.

We, like-minded Chennaivaasis, may once arrange a local tour lasting for 2 days. We and our family members may engage a separate vehicle, depending on the extent of patronage and visit all temples in and around Chennai (within 40 kms radius). The only criterion is such temples must have been ancient and constructed strictly according to agama sastras.

I love visiting temples and enjoy the temple architecture, sculpture, prasadams and above all, the peace and tranquility prevailing in these temples, which purify our soul, re-energise our body and intellect and I always derive pride from our ancient cultural heritage.

All the best

Dear RVR,

As usual, please take the lead in this matter too. Rest assured, the total expenditure will be borne by individual families on 'per capita' basis.

Let us have some plan and concretise the tour idea.

Thirueengoimalai

Sirs:

This small hill is near Trichy. Hearing that this is a sakthi peetam
where Divine Mother sri Lalitha Maha Tirupurasundari is seated on
Sadasiva who is on a lying posture with Indra, Brahma, Vishnu
and Rudra supporting Sadasiva . It is just like a cot supported by
four legs upon which Goddess Lalitha is seated. This is described
in sri Lalitha Sahasranama as panchpreda samaseena ... But I have
not seen anything like this at that place. Can anyone in this forum
throw light on this ? Is it really there ? Thanks.

Dear NRR Ji

Please go thro the posts slowly. Somewhere the details has been posted by myself.

Anyhow as an answer, you cannot see such posture of shri lalithamba in that temple. It is the "chaya peedam" (where the shadow of sati fell-off). The sakthi peetams are identified by the Bairavar accompanied and the kunda formed. So, here also you can see the "kunda" and also a bairava guarding it.

A posture of lalithamba is seen there opposite as a painting. Thats all.

Coming to the point, the divine posture of lalitha sitting on the left-lap of kameswara is a dhyana posture and is there in her chintamani gruha. So, we can think the posture in that temple. The kunda and bairva are considered as sakthi-shiva combo and hence, we should think that they are in unification.

In lalithamba sobanam, it goes like this

"vattamana indha peedathil eesar, brahma, malavar rudhirar kattilin kaal
kattil palagai sivan, sadasivan paai, eesanan thalaiyanai sobanam sobanam"

So, the position is even higher than what you explained. But it should be think of there when we are in presence of the peeta. Peeta is normally an formless sort of worship (Powerfukl place too). Since our minds have always seen deities in sanctum sanctorum, here also we expects like that only. To satisfy our needs, the pictorial representation has kept by them in the opposite side.

The meaning of the nama "Panchapredhasanaaseena" is actually without her grace these 5 people will be like dead-bodies. Also she has the whole power to control (Srishti, sthithi, samhara, thirodhana, anugraha) and these 5 people are just servants for her.

Pranams

Dear sri Durgadasan,
Thanks for the info. I went there about 30 years ago when I used to go to all
the places of pilgrimage. My imagination was different then and I imagined that
there would be idols. I have seen the painting.

I am aware of the tattvartha you have mentioned from the various stotras,
stories of Devi.

But, I am told that there is one such panchaloka vigraha of this type , may
be in Sringeri Sarada peetam or its branch mutt in Hyderabad. I heard from
my relatives that there was one in their house, which was handed over to the
Mutt since these powerful deities cant be kept in the house without proper
puja. This needs to be verified.

Dear NRR ji

The info is new to me. Please share if you come across any such things. Am much interested to see such idol (Even as small vigraha atleast). One fine day, when I went Panduranga temple in Thennangur, in the adjacent thapovanam am able to have a good darshan of shri lalitha with her whole parivara (Asvarooda, rajamathangi, Vaarahi, etc.). Here also the lalithamba you can see in such a nice pose of sitting over the throne weighing by these four lords. But, I think kameswara is missing there.

Pranams

Dear all

I forget to tell one more essential deity to see there in Thirusoolam temple. Its the "NANDIKESWARA". Here, we can see all the four legs of the nandhi sitting in front of Thriusoolanadhar.

It is believed that worshipping this sort of nandhi during pradosham times will bring all fortunes to us, as this nandhi is said to be in just raising posture (he may start to walk at anytime to reach his devotees).

Pranams
