Why women must never chant Gayatri Mantra?

prasad1

Active member
We have discussed this before.
In those there were well educated people like Sangom and Nara were there and liberal values were the norm.
In light of the new rightwing mania, and preserving 'cultural tradition'' let us revisit this topic.

Reason why Hindu women must not chant Gayatri Mantra
India is land, where religious legacies hold a great privilege than a mortal life. Diversity is the strength of our nation, and respecting age-old traditions is mark of Indian values.

Religions in India
The foundation of our motherland lies in the rich cultural heritage that is bejeweled by gifts from ancient India. We, Indians believe in respecting and imbibing every facet of our religion’s positivity.

Mantra jaap
However, like several other mantras, which follow strict tenets, Gayatri Mantra too has a few; one of which is, debarring women from chanting this mantra.

Other theories
Apart from this belief, another primeval reason why women were disallowed from chanting the holy mantra was totally scientific. According to Shastras, recitation of Gayatri Mantra affects three pivotal chakras inside human body- Mulaadhar, Swadhishthan, and Manipur.

Effects on glands
And, as per science a human body has two main gland- pituitary and prostate, both of which affect gender growth; chanting of mantra deeply affects the functioning of both these glands.

A woman doesnt have a prostate gland..anyway its always so controversial..no Guruji says a woman cant recite it.
I used to recite before..i never became masculine.

Anyway Hinduism tends to have only male friendly mantras.

Is there any mantra a male cant recite?

Anyway..no big deal..many other religions have surahs..ayahs and chantings that are not gender specific.

In the Quran anyone of any gender or community can recite any stanza.

The famous sufi chant is a gem of a mantra.

No issues to recite..no.endocrine problems.
Gender friendly.

dear Renuka ji, then what about female prostate cancer ?
Women do not have a prostate, but they do have a gland that may function similarly to a man’s prostate, which has led some medical professionals to call the Skene’s gland the “female prostate.”

Though Gayathri Mantra has to be recited with utmost secrecy, of late it is being broadcasted in public without any hue and cry.

Even Venkatesa Subrapatham is being blown thru air even in the evening.

Dear Sir..

Its an analogous organ with almost unheard of rate of cancer.

For that matter females do have an analogous organ for the penis too...but no one gets clitorial cancer.

Breast cancer is seen in man too but clitorial cancer is never heard of.

Thank you for the write up.

But anyhow..so many females recite Gayatri mantra and nothing happens.

Logically the Gayatri mantra does not have a deity though some draw a Gayatri Devi..so if the mantra is so masculinizing why dont someone draw a Gayatri Deva.

Somehow we love to give a female twist to everything yet keep females out.

India is supposed to be male cos Bharat is name after King Bharata yet somehow the name became a female Bharata Mata.

Dont know how and why.

Gayatri Mantra was added to Rig Veda (10:16:3) by Sage Brahmarshi Viswamitra.
There is a controversy in hinduism that women should not recite/chant ‘Gayatri Mantra‘.
Neither do the Vedas nor sanatana dharma discriminated women. Infact womanhood is held in the Highest Esteem, and the universe, including the Trimurtis (Brahma, Vishnu, Siva) are said to be created by Goddess, who manifested herself into different forms.
Then why is only Gayatri Mantra restricted from women ?

Because of hormones!

Sure; why not?

Let me first ask: Who is the unmitigated fool who said, and who is it that repeats, that only women, and only Hindu women must not, must never ever, chant Gaayathri"?

Can these fools and their loud-mouthed sycophants say what is the decreed punishment? Who the executioner?

Have their noses, ears and nipples sliced off as Lakshmana did to Soorpanaka in the forest?

Bring them on stage before an assembly of the people and strip them naked as Dusshaasana did to Polyandriste Draupadi?

Behead them as Raama did to Renuka?

Stoning to death? Public floggng as per shariah law (hudud)? Cutting off tongues as per ditto ditto? Gouging out eye-balls of scripture readers as per ditto ditto? Triple-talak divorce?

Placing round heavy logs on offenders' legs and rolling them to break bones and cripple victims? Smearing chilli powder on the eyes and private parts (another favoured Mughal torture)? Hanging upside down till victim unconscious (also Mughal speciality)? Electric shocks to the genitals (a la Mughals)? Violence inflicted on the women in their children's presence or vice versa?

Forced to sit naked in the open in winter and under hot sun in summer? Forced to die of starvation through incarceration (on orders of Indira Gandhi alias Priyadarshani Nehru-Feroze Khan in Operation Bluestar)? Forced to sit bare-assed on a hot iron plate and have hot sand poured over one's body, as Mughal Emperor Jehangir did to Guru Arjan Dev Ji? Wrapped up in thick cotton and set on fire, and roasted alive as was done to Bhai Sati Das?

The despised and oft-savaged "cultural tradition" as I learnt it says Hindu women must not prostitute themselves, or have secret or open lovers when married.

Is it not the current new leftwing mania for girls to lose their virginity soon after puberty? As Tamil film actress said, "No educated woman today is a virgin on her marriage day." (The Hadiths say Aisha lost hers at eight years to a 65-years-old paedophile who had already married his daughter-in-law.)

Is not divorce on the rise in India, even among Brahmins, let alone Hindus? Are there not adverts in the papers, magazines and online publications for matches for "innocent divorcees"? For "virgin-widows"? For "unencumbered divorcees"?

What is there to prevent or deter Hindu women earning tons of money (half a million US dollars a go) as "rented wombs" (surrogate mothers) for non-Hindus or fellow-Hindus?

What I mean is, if you can donate one kidney, one cornea, all four limbs, half your liver, your skin, your hair etc for money, why not rent your womb? (Men donate sperm for cash. Till recently they donated blood for cash.)

Some Indo-Pak-Mals who do not even know what is going on in their own adopted country's hospital kitchens nor how many cows locally-bred are slaughtered every Hari Raya Haji (Eid al Adha), cannot be expected to know that in Muslim Africa among the tribes who still practise female circumcisions, clitoral cancer has occurred, e.g. through fouled-up excisions and unhygienic practices. Perhaps also through masturbation.

With due respects to the sentiments, there is no authentic text which debars women from chanting gayathri mantra. But both men and women should follow some basic principles before chanting any mantra.
1) Purity of body ie fresh bath or not menstruating.
2) Purity of mind (most important). ie a mind without any ill thoughts or bitterness or anger and filled with total devotion and dedication and nothing else.

In fact purity of mind is much more important than purity of body.

A woman should be able to recite any mantra regardless of what anyone says regardless of menstruation or bathing or anything for that matter... The purity standards are idiotic at best. no offense intended... There should not be any distinction whatsoever...

Interesting reply..waiting for some equally interesting responses from the interesting beings here.

Sure.

Rephrasing Sri ramskrid with all due humility:

A woman should be able to wear anything (e.g. bikini) or nothing regardless of what anyone says regardless of menstruation or bathing or anything for that matter. The attire standards are idiotic at best.. There should not be any distinction whatsoever.

She should have utter freedom to wear anything (e.g. bikini) or nothing at the Shabarimalai Ayyappan Temple, or in a Muslim mosque in Malaysia. Or even when on a Haj pilgrimmage to Mecca.

Kahlil Gibran the Lebanese poet and philosopher wrote:-

"Then the God took consuming fire from fhe furnace of anger, and searing wind from the desert of ignorance, and sharp-cutting sands from the shore of selfishness, and coarse eath from under the feet of ages, and combined all and fashioned Man. (He meant Woman.)

"He gave Man (again he meant Woman) a blind power that rages and drives him (he meant her) into a madness which extinguishes only before gratification of desire, and placed life in him (again he meant her) which is the spectre of death."

Kahlil Gibran also wrote:-

"When midnight came and the spirits emerged from hidden places, I saw a cadaverous, dying spectre falling to her knees, gazing at the moon. I approached her, asking, 'What is your name?'

"My name is Liberty," replied this ghastly shadow of a corpse.

"And I inquired, 'Where are your children?'

"And Liberty, tearful and weak, gasped, 'One died crucified (Jesus?), one died mad (the Prophet?), and the third one is not yet born (the Mahdi?).'

"She limped away."

In olden days, women had sacred white thread across their shoulder and participated in all vedic rituals.
They even contributed towards many slokas in vedas. But in later years, due to their menstrual cycles and responsibilities of kids breaking their concentration constantly, they were kept away from vedic rituals.
Slowly, the sacred thread and gayatri mantra went away from them.

Even they are not allowed to recite Sundara Kanda of Ramanayana(for containing the gayatri mantra).
It is well known that each vedic mantra has certain frequency and acts upon different parts of human body, glands, chakras and organs.
Gayatri Mantra’s 24 digits produce vibrations that work on 3 invisible spiritual chakras (Mooladhara, Swadhishhtana, Manipura) in our body.
Pituitary(near brain) and Prostate(near reproductive organ) glands in human body.
These two glands release hormones that seperate male from female kids while they attain puberty.

If a woman starts chanting these versus regularly, she is likely to lose her female-hood character and can get manly tendencies developed in physical appearance and behaviour.
In most of cases, it can cause hormone disturbances in the body and disturb their menstrual cycle and even extend it beyond five days !
In rare cases, a woman who chants these v
ersus frequently, develops masculine character which allows growth of facial hair !
These changes are not immediate and are noticed over a period of years.
Lactating mothers who chanted gayatri mantra for 108 times per day, produced lesser milk than normal after 10 days.

Even it effects vocal chord which differentiates voices of men and women.
For someone who wants to pickup an argument by stating that women are suppressed, should understand that humans are divided as men and women by nature – not by humans.
By birth, our gender is decided and our bodies are assigned few duties which cannot be altered.
A man going through menstrual cycle or getting pregnant is considered abnormal, and so is a woman with facial hair.

In an experiment on frogs, pre-recorded Gayatri Mantra was played at a pond where Frogs were moving around for mating. After about 10 minutes, few frogs went back into water, while others remained on land.
When tested, all those frogs which remained on land were male and only female frogs left the place.
Even animals are sensitive to frequencies and vibrations.

Looks like some fearless aspiring female Mahdi is at it again. Spreading the mssionary message: "Down with Hinduism! Up with Islam. The Quran is superior to all Hindu sacred texts."

Really?

Let us look at the Quran again. Earlier we looked at the surahs based on which some called it a textbook for terrorists. What does the Quran say about the Islamic Heaven?

The Muslims' concept of rewards in Heaven for the pious is totally different from ours.

We see our jeevaathman, on release from the mortal body on death, attaining not so much a pleasureable Earthly Paradise above the clouds, but merger with the Paramaathman through a four-step process -- saa-lokam, saameepam, saa-roopam, and saayujyam. Meaning, reaching the Heavenly abode, attaining the Divine presence, attaining the Divine form, and attaining complete merger with the Divinity.

In contrast, from its very beginning Koran 2. 25 promises sex in Jannat the Muslim Heavenly Paradise with "chaste virgins" eternally, plus satisfaction of all carnal desires, saying:-

Proclaim good tidings to those who have faith and do good works. They shall dwell in gardens watered by running streams: whenever they are given food to eat, they shall say, 'This is what we used to eat before.' Wedded to chaste virgins, they shall abide therein for ever.

So does Koran 37. 41 - 61, emphasising good food, good drink and union with more virgins:-

The true servants of God (after death) shall be well provided for, feasting on fruit, and honoured in the Garden of Delight. Reclining face to face upon soft couches, they shall be served with a goblet filled at a gushing (wine) fountain, white and delicious to those who drink it. They shall sit with (and fondle, be fondled, and be intimate with?) bashful dark-eyed virgins, as pure and chaste as the sheltered eggs of ostriches. Surely, this is the supreme triumph. To this end let every good man labour. (Note: these and the following are Allah's own words as spoken to Prophet Muhammad.)

Koran 38. 50 - 55. goes on to promise more of the same:-

The righteous shall return to a blessed retreat: the Garden of Eden whose gates will open wide to receive them. Reclining here with bashful virgins for companions, they will call for abundant fruit and drink. Our gifts can have no end.

Koran 43, 70 - 73 promises "all that your soul desires", reiterating:-

Enter Paradise in all delight. You shall be served with golden dishes and golden cups. Abiding there for ever, you shall find all your soul desires and all that your eyes rejoice in. Your sustenance shall be abundant fruit.

Koran 44. 45 re-emphasises sex with dark-eyed houris for ever in luxurious surroundings - The righteous shall be lodged in peace together amidst gardens and fountains, arrayed in rich silks and fine brocade. Yes, and We shall wed them to dark-eyed houris. Secure against all ills, they shall call for every kind of fruit. That will be their supreme triumph.

Koran 52. 17 - 24 adds meat and luxurious couches to exotic foods, drinks, plus "dark-eyed houris" (celestial courtesans), "young boys fair as virgin pearls" (for homosexual intercourse by men and sexually satisfying with women in Paradise?), and more:-

In fair gardens the righteous shall dwell in bliss, rejoicing in what their Lord will give them. The Lord will say: "Eat and drink to your hearts' content; this is the reward for your labours. (They shall recline on couches ranged in rows.) And to dark-eyed houris We shall wed them. Fruits We shall give them, and such meats as they desire. And there shall wait on them young boys of their own, as fair as virgin pearls (for fondling, for masturbation, and for other homosexual exploits)."

Koran 55. 53 - 69 says Muslims, on reaching Heaven:-

They shall recline on couches lined with thick brocade, and within each shall hang fruits of many gardens. Therein are bashful virgins whom neither man nor djinns have touched before. Virgins as fair as corals and rubies. And besides these there shall be other gardens of darkest green. A gushing fountain shall flow in each. Each planted with fruit-trees, the palm and the pomegranate. In each there shall be virgins chaste and fair: dark-eyed virgins sheltered in their tents whom neither man nor djinn will have touched before. They shall recline on green cushions and fine carpets.

Koran 56. 10 - 38 continues that in addition to having perpetual sex with bashful virgins chaste and fair, whom neither men nor djinn have ever touched before, God will supply plenty of "immortal youths" in Heaven for good Muslims (especially women?):

They shall recline on jewelled couches face to face, and there shall wait on them immortal youths with bowls and ewers and a cup of purest wine that will neither pain heir heads nor take away their reason, with fruits of their own choice and flesh of fowls that they relish.

And theirs shall be the dark-eyed houris, chaste as hidden pearls: a reward for their deeds.

We (i.e. Allah the God) created houris and made them virgins, loving companions (for you in Heaven after you die).

Koran 56. 58 confirms that Allah the Muslim God either masturbates or has sex with male or female angels in Jannat (or does both):- Behold! the semen you discharge - did you create it, or did We?

Koran 56. 75 exalts the untouchable Koran - I (Allah) swear by the shelter of the stars (a mighty oath, if you but knew it) that this is a glorious Koran, safeguarded in a book which none may touch except the purified.

True...some oldie cant help fantasizing about virgins in another type of heaven.

Lol...when the body declines in function...only the mind wants to hold on to it directly or indirectly.

Cant help quoting Bhajo Govindam

अङ्गं गलितं पलितं मुण्डं, दशनविहीनं जतं तुण्डम्।
वृद्धो याति गृहीत्वा दण्डं, तदपि न मुञ्चत्याशापिण्डम् ॥१५॥
angam galitam palitam mundam dasanavihinam jatam tundam,
vrddho yati grhitva dandam tadapi na muñcatyasapindam. – 15

The body has weakened; the head has turned grey; the mouth has become toothless; the old man moves about with his staff. Even then, he does not give up his bundle of hopes and desires.

"some oldie cant help fantasizing about virgins in another type of heaven. "

True.

One such oldie, having incestuously already married his own daughter-in-law Zainab bint Jahsh, and having several concubines (sex slaves) -- such as Jewesses Mariah bint Shamoon Al Quptya and Tukana Al-Quaraziya, both war widows after the Prophet suddenly attacked the sleeping peaceful Jewish village of Bani Qurayza, (and beheaded the 700 to 900 males there including pubescent boys) and having also a concubine such as Al-Jariya (presented to him as a sex slave by Zainab bint Jahsh his wife and former daughter-in-law) -- went on at the age of 53 to acquire as a paedophile six-year-old Aishah bint Abu Bakr and married her two years later when he was 55.

It was to this self-same oldie that in the Quran Allah the Islamic God revealed the incredible carnal pleasures of the Islamic heaven as quoted from the Quran itself in my posting #20 above, featuring for sexual enjoyment of the faithful for ever and ever, "young boys" and "immortal youths" and bashful virgins whom neither man nor djinns have touched before. Virgins as fair as corals and rubies.

Plus Fruits We shall give them, and such meats as they desire and a goblet filled at a gushing (wine) fountain, white and delicious to those who drink it.

The same oldie in his lifetime had the following wives:-

  1. Khatijah bint Khuwaylid (who was in her forties and he was in his twenties)
  2. Jawda bint Zamia
  3. Aishah Abu Bakr (see note above)
  4. Hafsa bint Umar
  5. Zainab bibt Khuzayna
  6. Umm Salama bint Abu Umayya
  7. Zainab binbt Jahsh (see note above)
  8. Rahyana bint Zayd ibn Amr (war widow from Bani Qurayza mentioned above)
  9. Juwaryriyah bint Al-Harith
  10. Ramlah bint Abu Sufyan
  11. Safiyah bint Huyayy
  12. Maymunah bint al-Harith
  13. Mulayka bint Kaab
  14. Fatima Al-Aliya bint Zahyanh Al Dabhak
  15. Asma bint Al Numan
  16. Amra bint Yazid
According to Anas ibn Malik the Prophet visited all of his wives in one night, as he had the sexual prowess of 30 men. (See Salih Bhukhari 1:5:268.)

On top of all these, the randy oldie had thousands of sex-slaves at his command acquired through his Allah-ordained "one-fifth" levy on all wealth, land and slaves captured during the various raids on neighbouring villages and human settlements from the time he attained the age of 40 till he died aged 65.

He ordered that on his death, none of his surviving widows - including teen-aged Aishah -- should be alllowed to re-marry. They were shut up in solitary confinement in their own homes, with armed sentries posted to ensure isolation and to guard against temptation and contact with eligible men.

Some unrepentant self-radicalised cow-catcher suffering from infectious bovine spongiform encephalopathology cannot help fantasising about "young boys" and "immortal youths" and such meats as they desire. And young boys of their own, as fair as virgin pearls (for fondling, or being fondled by for masturbation, and for other heterosexual and homosexual exploits)."

I read while browsing
Gayatri Mantra was added to Rig Veda (10:16:3) by Sage Brahmarshi Viswamitra.

You really mean that vedA mantrams upto 10:16:2 were lying in cloth bound condition and this Gayatri is just added or appended to the existing compendium? What about vedA mantrams after 10.16.3? They were composed later and added to the pile?

I really appreciate your efforts to spread Hinduism and make this forum lively, but picking up bits of info from the net is hardly the right way to get or pass on authentic information. For this you have to do a bit of spade work like learning how the mantrams were cognized, how they were collated and how they are redacted and being made available in the present form of mantra, 10.16.3 = gAyatri mantra.

and the universe, including the Trimurtis (Brahma, Vishnu, Siva) are said to be created by Goddess, who manifested herself into different forms.

So the paurANic stories that Brahma originated from Mahavishnu's nAbhikamalam are wrong?

In olden days, women had sacred white thread across their shoulder and participated in all vedic rituals. They even contributed towards many slokas in vedas.

Though there are cases of RishikAs like Gargi etc. to be mantra-dhrashTas and having dhrishti of mantras or being mantra composer (in the layman's language), I do not remember to have read anywhere in samhitAs, brAhmaNam, Aranyakas or sUtras of them having worn sacred white thread across their shoulder. I would be very grateful if you can give some authentic source for this info.

But in later years, due to their menstrual cycles and responsibilities of kids breaking their concentration constantly, they were kept away from vedic rituals.

Does that mean in the earlier era women did not have menstrual cycles? This does not seem to agree with biological and physiological evolution of women.

The mantram and the vidhi of wearing yagnOpavitam appears in mahAnArAyanOpaniSad which is in taittiriya Aranyakam. Judging by linguistic analysis this upaniSad dates roughly 700-800 years after Rg vedic period as per experts and if one goes by the premise that mantras were being kept added to the corpus (like you said of gAyatri) then roughly for 700 years gAyatri was chanted without wearing yagnOpavitam.

Even they are not allowed to recite Sundara Kanda of Ramanayana(for containing the gayatri mantra).

This is NEWS to me because my own mother still does sundara Kanda pArayaNam even today and she has been doing that for more than 50 years. For what it is worth, the person who asked her to follow this was my grandfather, who was a practicing purOhit and had earned the title of Brahma-riSi for his knowledge of both vedas and sanskrit.

I would be glad if you could give me the precise slokam of sundara kAnDam where the gAyatri mantram appears in toto, not one syllable here and the next syllable after 10 or so slokams.

This urban legend has to be slayed because it is just myth. If you have noticed, gAyatri mantra (except in a couple of occasions and at gAyatri hOmam) is ALWAYS chanted/uttered/muttered silently. In fact there are some injunctions that even the lips should not move while mentally chanting or reciting gAyatri mantram. In such circumstances, can you please explain how can it produce vibrations that work on kundalini and chakras?

Chanting gAyatri mantrA is said to bestow abundant benefits to the chanter, but I would not like to go there as it is a subject of faith.

Do you really believe these stuffs?

If you remember, Dasharatha mahArAjA performed putra-kAmeshti yAgam to beget his four sons. Do you suppose Dasharatha could have been unaware of the sex changing benefits of gAyatri japam?

Your posts gave me an indication that you are sincerely interested in bringing out the benefits or advantages of Hindu culture to other Hindus at a site they are likely to meet and discuss their culture and heritage. So I thought of writing a comprehensive post to make you aware of some of the nonsense freely peddled on the interest. But sharing free-floating and unauthentic info will only result in spread of absurd messages. I would estimate that 95% of the free-floating info on Hinduism on the internet is totally BOGUS.

Regards
