The most ancient scriptyure only refer to "tray vedaan"
Based on the above in the late 19th century there was a lot of discussion whether the Atarana Veda should be included in the list of the Major VedasFrom stray references in the Mahanaratha the atarvana Veda was called Atharvan-Angirasa smrtis and were associated with black majic etc
But references in the later upanishads and some grihya sutras refer to "Chatur Vedas"Based on the above it is to be concluded that Atharvana Veda is also one of the majot vedas,
THe term "Veda" strictly refer only to the Samhitas.The Aranyakas, etc do not form the core of the Vedas
