And here's another version that takes Chandas into account (Thanks to Dr. Naresh Cuntoor who did this transformation) -

न गम्यं न जालो न हासेन वक्त्रम् ।
न यन्ता न गन्ता न शान्तिर्न सन्धिः
चिदानन्दरूप: शिवोऽहं शिवोऽहम् ॥

(this set of shlokas follow the catchy Bhujanga-prayaata meter. )

There are four stages for prayaschitam:
1. One must realise that he/she has done something wrong.
2. He/she must do a sankalpa to do prayaschitam approved by sastras.
3. He/she must do the prayaschitam.
4. He must never ever repeat that wrong karma.
A quarter of the papam accrued for the wrong deed is removed at each stage. So only three fourths of the papams can be cleared away, as he has to wait till the end of his/her life.

:help:Can we please trade the 4 steps mentioned above for 10 crores each and get quick annulment of all the sin?

Giving ornaments to the lord is for personal satisfaction; it will not remove even an iota of the papam accrued.

Recently a lady in mumbai, who was making home made chocolates with alchohal flavour, was raided as she did not have a permit to buy alcohol or to make chocolates; 20 bottles of liquor and 20 packets of finished goods were confiscated. If she had to come out of the event, she has to pay to exercise, police departments or fight the case out in court over 10 years.

Somebody (who did not approve of her business) snitched on her. The lady should have known that she required license. If only she made tOsai (with fermented batter) it would have had the kick and she would not have required a permit for alcohol.:tsk:

What is the definition of 'papam'?

What is pApam? It varies according to one's viewpoint. As mentioned in these pages before, if you kill it is sin and if you eat what you kill the sin is abolished. Sorry for being so crude. But honestly sin is not something defined as black or white. It has all shades of gray. If you steal a hammer from your neighbor it might be called so (very elementary) and if you do a terrorist act (the extreme) that is also a sin. But wait a moment. Isn't one man's sin another man's puNyam (the muslims are assured of heaven if they kill infidels)?

U Ve swaminatha iyer's upanayanam

Ms subhashini tremmel is posting her readings on teh autobiography of swaminatha iyer in the google group 'mintamil'. This excerpt is on his upanayanam.

உ.வெ.சா அவர்கள் வேங்கடராம சர்மன் என்ற பெயர் கொண்ட விஷயத்தையும் அதன் தொடர்பான சம்பவங்களையும் இந்தப் பதிவில் சொல்லலாம் என நினைக்கின்றேன்.


உபநயனம் பற்றியும் அது தொடர்பில் நடந்த விஷயங்களைப் பற்றியும் கூறும் அத்தியாயத்தில் சில சம்பவங்களை உ.வே.சா அவர்கள் நினைவு கூறுகின்றார். உத்தமதானபுரத்தில் தான் உபநயனம் நடைபெற்றிருக்கின்றது. அரியலூரில் தங்கியிருந்த குடும்பத்தினரை அழைத்துக் கொண்டு இவரது அப்பா உத்தமதானபுரத்துக்கு உபநயனத்திற்காகவே வந்து சேர்ந்திருக்கின்றார். இப்போதெல்லாம் உபநயனம் என்பது வீட்டுக்கு வீடு வித்தியாசமாக நடைபெறும் வழக்கம் இருக்கலாம். இந்த உபநயனம் என்னும் சடங்கைப் போன்றே ஜெர்மானிய கத்தோலிக்க, ப்ரோட்டெஸ்டண்ட் குடும்பங்களிலும் இளம் பருவத்தில் ஒரு வகை ஞானஸ்தானம் என்பது நடைபெறுவதைக் காண்கின்றேன். இதைப் பற்றியும் இதன் தொடர்பில் இச்சடங்கைப் பற்றியும் வாய்ப்பமைந்தால் வேறொரு பதிவில் பகிர்ந்து கொள்கின்றேன். இப்போது உ.வே.சாவுக்கு உபநயனம் நடந்த கதையைப் பார்ப்போம்.


உபநயன ஊர்வலம் வாகன ஊர்வலம் என்பது இல்லாமல் தான் நடைபெற்றிருக்கின்றது. பொதுவாகவே இச்சடங்கின் போது உபநயனம் பெறும் சிறுவனை அம்மான் தன் தோளில் ஏற்றிக் கோள்வாராம். மக்கள், பெண்களும் ஆண்களுமாக வாத்திய கோஷ்டியின் கோஷங்களுடன் ஊர்வலமாக்ச் செல்வார்களாம். இப்படிச் செல்லும் கோஷ்டி ஒவ்வொரு வீட்டு வாசலிலும் நிற்குமாம். வீட்டிலுள்ள பெண்கள் இப்படி வந்து நிற்கும் உபநயனப் பையனுக்கு ஆரத்தி எடுப்பார்களாம். இதே சடங்குதான் உ.வே.சா அவர்களின் இளம் ப்ராயத்திலும் இவருக்கு நடந்திருக்கின்றது.


இவர்களின் குடும்ப வழக்கத்தின் படி உபநயன காலத்தில் சிறப்பு பெயர் சூட்டுவது வழக்கமாக இருந்துள்ளது அந்த வகையில் இச்சடங்கை முன்னிட்டு இவருக்கு வேங்கடராம சர்மன் என்ற சிறப்புப் பெயர் வழங்கப்பட்டு இப்பெயர் இவரது தகப்பனாருக்கும் ஏனைய பெரியோர்களுக்கும் பிடித்துப் போகவே இப்பெயரே இவருக்கு சில காலங்கள் வழக்கில் இருந்து வந்திருக்கின்றது. உ.வே.சா வேங்கடராம சர்மனாக சில காலம் அடையாளங் கொள்ளப்பட்ட கதை இது தான்.


உபநயனம் மட்டுமன்று .. எந்த சடங்காகினும் அதற்கு பொருட்செலவு என்பது தவிர்க்க இயலாத ஒன்று. உ.வே.சா காலத்திற்கு மட்டும் இன்னிலையில் விதிவிலக்கு இருந்திருக்கவா முடியும்?


இவரது உபநயனத்தைப் பற்றியும் அதற்கு பொருளுதவி கிடைத்த விதத்தையும் உ.வே.சா இப்படிக் கூறுகின்றார். "அக்காலத்தில் என் தந்தையாரை ஆதரித்து வந்தவர்களுள் ஒருவராகிய கொத்தவாசற் குமரப்பிள்ளை என்பவர் ஒரு சமயம் எங்கள் வீட்டுக்கு வந்திருந்தார். அப்போது என் தந்தையாருடைய ஷேம லாபங்களை விசாரித்தார். பேசி வருகையில் என் உபநயனத்தைப்பற்றி அவர் கவலையடைந்திருப்பதையறிந்து" அது விஷயமான கவலை தங்களுக்கு வேண்டாம். உபநயனத்துக்கு நான்கு நாட்களுக்கு முன் தங்களுக்கு பணம் கிடைக்கும்" என்று வாக்களித்தார்..........


என் பிதா இன்ன தினத்தில் முகூர்த்தம் வைத்திருக்கின்றதென்று குறிப்பிட்டுக் கொத்தவாசற் குமர பிள்ளைக்கு ஒரு கடிதம் எழுதி அனுப்பினார். முகூர்த்தத்திற்கு நான்கு தினங்கள் முன்னதாக அந்த உபகாரி இரண்டு வேளாளப் பிள்ளைகளை வேண்டிய தொகையுடன் அனுப்பினார். அவர்கள் வந்து பணத்தை என் தந்தையார் கையிலே கொடுத்தார்கள். அதை வாங்கும் போது என் தந்தையாரும் அருகிலிருந்த சிறிய தந்தையாரும் கண்ணீர்விட்டு உருகினார்கள்."


உ.வே.சாவின் உபநயனச் சடங்கு உற்றாரும் பெற்றோரும் மனம் நிறைவடையும் வகையில் நடைபெற்றிருக்கின்றது. உறவினர்கள் பலர் பல ஊர்களிலிருந்தும் வந்திருந்து கலந்து கொண்டு உபநயனச் சிறுவனாகிய வேங்கடராம சர்மன் என்ற புதுப் பெயர் பெற்றுக் கொண்ட உ.வே.சாவை வாழ்த்திச் சென்றிருக்கின்றனர்.

The best method is to learn properly from a Guru.

If it is not possible, Google search will give you all the types - Rig, Yajur or Sama vEdAs - Smartha / Vaishanavite.

Download the one you need. Some youtube videos are also available. Books are available in Giri stores -Chennai / Bangalore.
