Dear Moderator,

This is my first post since joining this forum.
I have a query.
My son's upanayanam has been fixed on july 10th in India. We live in the Uk. My periamma ( my father's brother's wife, my periappa died many years ago.) unfortunately passed away on 9th april. Am I allowed to proceed with this function in July?

Can anybody help me with an answer please?

Thanks.

Navaneeth.

Dear Navaneeth,

Is it written anywhere in any scripture regarding this matter?

Is there any law in any nation which forbids you from proceeding with Upanayanam of your son in the instance of demise of Dhayaadhi?

I reckon you may exercise your discretion in this matter.

Regards,
Sastri

Generally, we mourn for a year, especially in the type of relationship like periamma from paternal side. However, when very senior members of the family pass away and a marriage or such functions have been fixed before their demise, it is generally held as decided, assuming that such elders are there to bless the function. Actually we do the Subhasweekaram on the 13th day only to go ahead with any auspicious functions,if there is a necessity.
Again in all such matters, the type of opinion gathered inside the family and their consequences in the family relationships have to be kept in mind before any decision is made.
From a religious point of view, I do not think there is any objection to your performing the function. Again, before the Upanayanam, we also invoke the pithrus and offer them propitiation in the form of NANDHI SRARTHAM. IF THERE ARE NO VISIBLE OBJECTIONS AMONG THE MEMBERS OF YOUR FAMILY, GO AHEAD.
