Upanayanam

In general, Upanayanam (Poonal ceremony) is ideally performed during Uttarayana (January–June) and Sukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon), especially on days that are tithi- and nakshatra-wise auspicious.

Now, to your question — can it be done on Shukla Paksha Chaturdashi?

Technically, Shukla Paksha is a preferred phase, but Chaturdashi tithi (14th lunar day) is generally considered not very auspicious for most samskaras, including Upanayanam.

Why?

Because Chaturdashi is often associated with tapas, austerity, and sometimes with spiritual penance — not ideal for shubha karyams (auspicious events). Traditional panchangam and dharma shastra references like Dharma Sindhu or Kalpa Sutras usually avoid Chaturdashi for samskaras like Upanayanam, Vivaham, etc.

What you can do:

  • If Chaturdashi is the only option due to personal constraints, consult a qualified Vadhyar with your child’s janma nakshatra and the day’s lagna timings. Sometimes, the tithi may end early and the muhurtam might fall under Trayodashi (13th) or Pournami (15th), which could be acceptable depending on the specific period.
  • Also check for Tara Bala, Chandra Bala, and Lagna shuddhi.

So in short:
Shukla Paksha – good.
Chaturdashi – usually not recommended unless no other option and timing works out well.
