As a music teacher, I first appreciate the rAgamAlikA giving the names of the rAgAs as they sing....

VasanthA, KunthalavarALi, YadhukulakAmbodhi and Suruti.

If a man and a woman sing in the same pitch (sruthi) the man's voice will be heard like a shrill voice!

In old cinemas, ladies sang in their real voice which will be roughly 'anju kattai' - G in piano. And that pitch will be

very high for a man's voice! Usually men sing in what we call as 'oru kattai' sruthi which means C in piano.

Later on, lady play back singers cultured their false voices so well that they could sing one octave higher than men.

So ladies sing in 'ettu kattai' (one octave higher) to match the pitch, in duet songs!! They have the same high pitch

for solo songs too...

But overall in commercial movie songs..women tend to sing too shrill especially in the south.
One real shrill voice was SP Shailaja.
In Hindi songs they tend not to be too shrill.How come the difference??

First of all, sudhdha madhyama rAgams are easy for beginners. The ri - ga and dha - ni combination is same in

that rAgam. For easy understanding it is first ri, second ga; first dha, second ni. Once the beginner gets sa - pa

combination correctly, then ri - dha will be same combination. And ga - ni will be same combination. For a few

other rAgams like SankarAbharaNam, KaraharapriyA, ThOdi also the same type of combinations are there but since

MayamALavagowla has almost straight swarams, it is taken, IMHO. Other mentioned rAgams have more

'gamakams' and are difficult for beginners. It is also said that MMG rAgam brings prosperity to the singer!


Sri. T. M.S once said in an interview that if a person is not able to sing sa -pa correctly, then he can give up music!!

Wonderful Song Selection Sir,
Even a person with the basic knowledge of Ragas but with a great passion for songs will understand this ragamalika. That much clarity in their voices, People of all levels will enjoy such songs... it touches the heart....
I am not the right person to judge a singer and write my comments, Raji Madam will be the ideal person to post her comments with the right knowledge of Ragas and Piches.
but my humble opinion is; earlier female singers of films, be it K.V. Sundarambal, S. Varalaxmi, Soolamangalam Sisters, Smt. MLV to name few, they can even beat their male counterparts with their voice clarity and singing ability...Whatever be their pitch, they sing so naturally and with their real voice. So, the lyrics were crystal clear... How we are still able to remember the lyrics after many years.??? Today's singers; I don't think they will be able to compete with the predecessors in any category be it dedication, practice (Sadakam) timing, voice and even commitment are concerned. All have become commercialized and professionalized and they too have become the same. May be it is not their fault.. Time and the circumstances are persuading them to do so... With respects.. Two great songs of the great singer....( While I was listening to Nara ji's posted song... my mother came near me, while enjoying the song, narrated me the story of Sivakavi, what happens in the story, and told me about few more songs of the film... I have received instant information about the movie.. Thank you Nara Sir)

There are some basic differences, Renu! Some ladies have low pitched voice but can train in false voice to reach high

notes easily. All the North Indian singers, be it classical or filmy music, can reach very high notes only because of

their voice culture. You must have heard Parveen Sulthana's songs. One more difference is that, in the South, male

singers do not wish to change their pitch. If they take it below C (oru kattai) then the lady who sings the duet will have

6 - 7 as their sruthi and can manage better. But, some music directors are very competent and see that in the duet

songs, ladies are not given very high notes. Have you heard Sriram Parasuram and Anuradha Sriram jugalbandhis?
Poor Anu has to cope up with the 'ettu kattai' and strain so much during the concerts...... :high5:

All the singers of yesteryears were very competent. But as far as film music is concerned, I give 100% marks to

Smt. P. Susheela. She has a crystal clear voice, very good range and clarity of words. I always admire her! The

song 'Mannavan vandhAnadi' is one of her master pieces. Smt. M S S has given many hit songs but they have

more carnatic touch. So my vote is for Smt. P. Susheela!! :thumb:

Back to Carnatic music. This rAgamAlikA was sung by Smt. M S S and became very popular.

Verses from SilappathikAram, the epic written by IlangOvadigaL. All the mamis will request us

to sing this song, when we go to 'collect' navarAthri chundal!!

We copied the verses from the school library book and felt that it was a great achievement! :thumb:
