Dear Raji Madam and all other friends of this Tamil forum,

Wishing you all a very happy Navaratri, May Goddess Durga Ma Bless us all and let us have a peaceful, happy and prosperous year ahead...In another occasion, one of my senior well wishers suggested me to go through the Kamalamba Series; Nava Varna Krithis by Dikshitar. I am very much interested in Kirthnams and Varnams, but I am more into devotional/Semi Classical songs, I came closer with ragams with the help of such songs. But giving full respect to my respected well wisher, I searched and learnt about the Nava Varna Krithis of Dikshitar/ Kamalamba Series with different Ragams and I am very happy in posting two krithnams here, to mark the beginning of Navaratri. As usual, Raji madam is the best person to tell more about this. With respects. Anandi

I am surprised by this video clipping of Smt. Nithyasree. Coming from a famous school and family of music,

she is not able to explain the vivAdhi rAgams which get the name by the presence of vivAdhi swarams.

It is very easy to explain to any person familiar with the twelve notes in one octave:

The constants sa and pa + 2 each in ri, ga, ma, dha and ni

The four vivAdhi swarams are:

1. The ri sung in the place of first ga = shatsruthi rishabam

The ga sung in the place of second ri = sudhdha gAndhAram

The dha sung in the place of first ni = shatsruthi dhaivatham

The ni sung in the place of second dha = sudhdha nishAdham

Since there are many readers of this thread with basic knowledge of carntic music, I am posting this!

Now watch the clipping!

Kamalambikayam - Dikshidar's kirtis - navavarnam

Dear All,

DKJ sings it well. Also B.Rajam Iyer.

If you want you can hear it in AIR at 6 Am daily , each day in one raga
as per order.

Not only Devi worship, it says Brahma vidya and Sri vidya are one and
the same. Deep meaning.

KamalAmbA navAvaraNa krithis are the compositions of Sri. Muthuswamy Dikshidar, one of the trinities of Carnatic

music. Including the invocation and mangaLam krithis, they are eleven, in praise of Goddess KamalAmbA of ThiruvAroor.

The nine main krithis deal with the intricacies of the nine enclosures of the Sri Chakra. A song on Lord Ganesha of

ThiruvAroor is added at the beginning of these eleven Krithis, making this as a set of one dozen krithis.

Each day of Navarathri has one Krithi and it is very special to sing the respective krithi on these days.

We were very fortunate to learn all these under the tutelage of Prof. Dr. S. Ramanathan.

:pray2:

Dear Anandi,

Hope you will post all the NavAvaraNam krithis in this thread.

Since the lyrics is given, it is easy to follow the Krithi.

Best wishes,
Raji Ram
