When sruthi is shifted to Ma, M1 P D1 S. R2. M1. M. R2. S. D1 P M1. gives

Sivaranjani: S R1 G1 P D2 S. S. D2 P G1 R1 S

Both have the same mood!!

Hence the song 'Enna kavi pAdinAlum' is said to be in NeelamaNi (normal sruthi) and Sivaranjani (madhyama sruthi)

Good question Ozone Sir! I mentioned the difference between KalyANi and LathAngi.

Difference between PanthuvarALi and LathAngi is the Ri only; R1 and R2 respectively.

So, G M P D N S prayOgams will be similar. Hence to find out the correct rAgam, please note the Ri. :)

My master used to say that we have to show all the swarams right at the beginning of the rAgam singing. If a person sings

between Ni (lower stAyi) to only Pa for some time, listeners will be confused between KalyAni and LathAngi. Similarly,

'prayOgam's between Ga to top Sa will confuse between PanthuvarALi and LathAngi. So the 'rocket' sangathis, as I call them,

for the full octave will help to identify the rAgam correctly. :thumb:

PS: I have heard several times, the maestro Sri Balamuralikrishna, singing only three or four swarams and keep his audience

guessing for the right rAgam, just for fun.

This snake charming rAgam is sung in Madhyama sruthi because it has only limited notes from

mandhara sthAyi nishAdham to madhyama sthAyi nishAdham. It is janya rAgam of Thodi and

has R2 in the ArOhaNam. The snake tune adds N2 also ( S R G ,, R S , R S N,,,)

thanks for the long explanation. So, for the semi-half-baked knowledge that refuses to make further progress,
I am not that off it appears.
 
I attended a very nice dance concert yesterday. She danced to a thillAnA in rAgA pUrvi . I think the composer is Thirukokarnam Vaidyanatha Bhagavatar. This is the only song in purvi I have heard (Geetha Bennett in a concert 4 years ago).
