Excellent concept.

Here in India also, in certain areas, people buy meals token and give it a deserving poor.

I used to do it.

We have a similar system in many parts of pune with small roadside eateries selling vada pav, dosa, misla etc. Some pay for extra portions and is given to others who can't pay.

During the pandarpur yatra too, some restaurents give free food, some pay for extra in their bill for feeding the varkari yatris. In addition to feeding pointss set by corporates, companies, trade groups and charities.

It is a good practice, hope it spreads of other cities too to ensure that food we take reaches others who can't afford, and supplements their subsistence level food.

In delhi , there is a cafe in hauz khas area where customers can sit for any amount of time ,relax ,have coffee and pay what they would like to and go without paying also if they feel . they get

bills with 0 written on them. the youngsters who started the joint say they expected to make a loss but they ended up making good money and are thinking of opening

more outlets in delhi ,bangalore,mumbai with the same philosophy.

In perur, we used to buy meal tokens and give it to those begging outside. We learnt, from a priest of the temple that such tokens were redeemed back for cash.!

Last Deepavali, an old woman came to our house at night, begging for money. We felt sorry for her plight and gave her ten rupees. To our astonishment, she flung it back on us and started abusing us. She said that even her dog would not accept ten bucks.

That is the other side of the story for those who may not be aware...

I saw on online post in youtube about a decent man in delhi taking to begging dressed as a beggar with torn clothes with one hand in a sling at a traffic junction as an experiment.

He could collect an amazing 200 rupees in two hours. He says begging is a good profession going by the collections

In many bakeries in Boston, the left over preparations are given FREE to the passers by! :thumb:

The left overs are kept in huge open boxes outside the bakery and the homeless ones grab what they want and eat heartily! :hungry:

There is a subtle difference between donating left overs, and sharing the food one takes. In the OP and in some later posts, it is equivalent to modern 'aththi devo bhava', share and not give away.

I think this is also a kind of generous sharing by the bakery owners.

The cakes and donuts are neatly packed and not just thrown like it is done in feasts held by our people!

I appreciate the bakers for their kind gesture. :thumb:

BTW, when a pregnant young lady was walking with her hubby around 10 p.m, one baker gave her six yummy

chocolate donuts packed in a big paper bag, even when she refused to take it free!
