So Much For “Indian Family Values”, Says a New Survey on Old Age

Excerpts:

Surinder Kaur is a fighter. She lives alone in a home that her son allegedly tried to claim entirely for himself after the death of his father. Her story points to the intersection of patriarchy, monetary aspirations and family dynamics – where the old, especially women, bear the brunt.

Help Age India conducted a nationwide survey whose most recent findings hold a mirror to our commonly held belief that we have strong “family” values.

Ageism is on the rise in a country which prides itself on its Indian culture and values. It is a sad commentary that 53% of the elderly interviewed said that yes, we as a society discriminate. It varies enormously from city to city. In Bangalore, 70% say they actually face abuse. Maybe it is because the city has developed so fast, with IT companies where there is huge performance pressure. Elderly parents coming in from outside are seen as not much more than caretakers of their grandchildren.

Elder abuse is rampant in all metros-more in places like delhi or bangalore.

Wherever big money rolls in , elders get ill treated in public spaces and more in homes.

South delhi with the most affluent tops in abuse.

Elders need to become self sufficient and be on guard against abuse-which is often by their own children who tend to use them for cooking or baby sitting. The more

vicious children dispossess them of their property if they are widowed .

It is sad that such things have become very common place in many homes.

This dependance on children is a two edged sword. While children could guarantee safety and roof over the heads of senior citizens , they are the maximum abusers. The

parents end up as free baby sitters and family cooks .They get shut up full time home with no avenues for outings and pursuing their own interests.

Staying separately leads to isolation both inside the home and social space. One comes across many cases of elder abuse by public officials in banks,Public and

private transport . There are cases of chain snatchings and rude public behavior by the young when seniors are slow in their movements. There is a recent downtrend in

callous behaviour in banks specially nationalised ones towards all .They keep our money and misbehave giving atrocious service if one can call it that.

These banks have sent the country downhill with their NPAs. The culprits mostly the borrowers, politicians and senior bank officials have gone scot free.
