Rise of the Sari(ee)

I saw a notice handwritten and handed out in the apartments
in the neighborhood where my younger son used to live ten years ago.

Hair removing treatment for 1$ for one arm and 2$ for 2 arms!

I asked my son whether it was handed out by Indian girls.
My son was surprised and asked me, "How did you find out?"

"Who else will think of hair removal for one arm and one leg
and circulate hand written notices?" :rolleyes:

Now the answer your question ...
We may teach but we won't get paid for the sari wearing classes. :nono:

The title of the thread made me smile - I thought sarees were meant to have a good "FALL" !

The title - Rising Saree, made me think of one of those compact, self-opening umbrellas and then the
'visual' of six full meters of it all !!!!!!!!!!

It got even funnier when Tmt VR came-up with the One-Hand / One Leg stuff !!!

When a lady wished to teach her non-Indian DIL how to wear a saree,
the girl coolly replied, 'No, thanks. I shall learn from youtube!' :peace:

A few months ago, I went to get my blood sugar checked as usual.

When I climbed the three steep steps leading to the lab,
something was hindering my free movement!

Before I could find out what was wrong, a young man came running towards me.
I froze in fear wondering what he was up to.

I will be a sitting duck for the chain snatchers.
Neither can I run nor can I shout and raise an alarm!

Actually he bent down and was trying to help me with the skirt
which got stuck up somewhere in my knee protection socks.

He might have imagined me as his aunt / grand ma but still
I felt ill at ease when a stranger came running to help me with the skirt/ sari.

That day I decided to get a salwar suit made - at least for wearing
when I had to climb steps leading to labs/ buses / trains.

That is not the end of the story!

I did not want to wear those colorful sets which the youngsters wear.
I did not have the courage to tear up one of my nice saris.

Then something unpleasant happened.

I scratched my lovely printed sari with the point of the ball pen
which i had held like the ezhuththaaNi of Cheeththalai Chaaththanaanr.

Anyway a sari had got torn. I can as well try to make the best of a bad bargain.

To my utter surprise I could make it into a three piece suit complete with a 3 yards daavani / thuppatta. A sober, decent, well matched and conformable set of dress!

To my greater surprise neither my husband nor my critical relatives make any offensive comments.

So I have been stitching like a maniac and will get the 11th and 12th sets ready by this weekend!

AND I saved at least Rs 750 in the material cost and Rs 250 in stitching cost per set.

All these happened because of the ezhuththaaNi and the torn sari.

This is what I mean when I say

We must learn to convert our curses into our blessings!
 
Is it comfortable driving 2 wheelers with Sarees...I once saw a young damsel struggling in the roads as her saree pallu got caught in the scooter...With great difficulty she got herself extricated with the help of a passer by woman..I wonder what would have happened had there been no woman nearby..This happened in Nungambakkam a few years back

One arm OK! One leg??? :faint:

This 'one arm' concept reminds me of what I call as 'Janata iron'! Wonder what? It is the method to 'iron' the portions of the

dress, which will be visible to other people. For example, the bottom portion of the shirt which will be inserted into the pants

need NOT be crease-free! And so are the portions of the blouse, which will be covered by the saree and the top portion of the

churidAr /pyjamA, which will be covered by the salwar / kameez. Saves electricity, time and energy!! :thumb:
 
Never make fun of oldies who wear salwar - kameez because we never know what will happen in future! :decision:

who is making fun of oldies who wear s/k.

it is the standard wear up north regardless of age. now it has become the garment of convenience of our girl youth of the south. even mamis find it convenient.

my 80 year old mil wears it on long haul flights, walks and anywhere there needs to be brisk walking.

so what is wrong with it to make fun? pray enlighten me. thank you.

Dear Sir,

The same kind of accident may happen even with the dhuppattA cloth, if left free! Now a days, Sing. Chennai girls have learnt to wear

the dhuppattA like a 'mugamoodi koLLaikkAri', with just the eyes left open! Some wear a cooling glass to completely cover the face!

FYI, many of my friends wear sarees while driving a two-wheeler. But they make sure that they tuck in the pallu tightly.

Moral: Never wear floating garments while driving a two-wheeler!

Dear Sir,

A few months back, I remember to have read a post making fun of oldies wearing s/k! The poster may not remembers it! :cool:

BTW, s/k has become a regular dress for Sing. Chennai woman regardless of age. It is so convenient. Though I wear sarees

while going out, I wear s/k in the evenings and while travelling. Of course, I wear the dhuppattA like a mAlai. :)
 
Right from the young age, I did not like the nighties! Used to think 'uralukku uRai pOtta mAdhiri irukku!' The first sets of s/k

were stitched by me for playing games in our B H P V officers club and then for night dress. Even now it continues. :)
 
I was in a Marriage function when the discussion turned towards ladies dresses...One of the ladies commented" Whenever I wear Saree, looking at the comments that I get-Adhu theriyardu, Idhu theriyardu, Moodikko-I decided to shift to S/K"

There are two ways of wearing a six yards saree / a madisAr saree.

One is 'all covered' and the other is 'showy'!! :D

Yesterday, I had to wear a madisAr for a special lunch. I quickly stitched a two-minute-madisAr, using a Singapore saree

which is very soft and silky with beautiful print. Drying for 'madi' purpose was very easy and wearing it was comfortable

and all covered! When a few tradition seekers did not appreciate, the cook mAmi came and hugged me for this invention.

She is planning to send her DIL to meet me and learn the technique! :)

Thank you very much! :)

I have to confess I HAD to use my knowledge in mathematics, geometry and drawing
in successfully converting a mere sari, that too minus the rich pallu ,
into a three piece decent, sober, loose dress for a lady of my size!:rolleyes:

Bonus blessings:

1. I have now 12 rich colorful pallus - which my daughters in law and granddaughter appreciate as lovely brocade Indian fabric. So the next job will be to convert them into jeans-tops /blouses/ kurtis and langa for the JUJU kutti, depending on the length of those pallus.

2. AND wearing these has become a motivating force to resume my yoga session - which had taken the back seat after my brief illness after Dasara!

Well! the daavani is worn ON the salwar suit and the whole thing will look like a Ayyangaar madisar!
I can make it into an Iyer madisar by wearing the daavani on the opposite shoulder.
I must try that too! :)
