Origin
The figurative expression 'getting down to brass tacks' isn't particularly old as phrases go. Its first appearance in print in 1863 was in the Texas newspaper The Tri-Weekly Telegraph:
"When you come down to 'brass tacks' - if we may be allowed the expression - everybody is governed by selfishness."
The derivation of 'getting down to brass tacks' is uncertain
In order to be more accurate than the rough-and-ready measuring of a yard of material by holding it out along an arm's length, cloth was measured between brass tacks which were set into a shop's counter. Such simple measuring devices were in use in the late 19th century, as is shown by this piece from Ernest Ingersoll's story The Metropolis of the Rocky Mountains, 1880:
"I hurried over to Seabright’s. There was a little square counter, heaped with calicoes and other gear, except a small space clear for measuring, with the yards tacked off with brass tacks."

The larger public interested in the field of population genetics should be all the more aware of this problematics as genetic studies come to us in a scientific garb; in actual fact, they are scientific only in part; there is still much room for human prejudice and error.
So to build up history based on a partial science where personal prejudices take over is wrong.
This theory has already been misused by certain sections for some political gains. Tamil Nadu is a standing example of the same.

Now, this is an interesting one.
This must sound like a very odd expression to someone just learning the language for the first time. There are a lot of things I have seen falling from the sky, but cats and dogs are not one of them.
How did this expression come about, then?
It's quite simple, really. It originated in England in the 1500's, when houses had thatched roofs. A thatch roof consisted of straw piled high, with no wood underneath. In cold, foggy England, this was sometimes the only place for an animal to get warm. Cats, and other small animals, like mice, bugs, and the occasional dog would wind up on the roofs.
When it rained really hard, some of the animals would slip off the roof and wash up in the gutters on the street. Hence, the saying, "It's raining cats and dogs" ended up referring to a heavy rain.

Yesterday I read a message in FB about a lady by name Nalina starting a hotel by name Thaligai (தளிகை) in Mylapore wherein all our forgotten ancient and traditional culinary dishes ( மோர்க்களி, அக்காரவடிசல், உசிலி etc) will be given a fresh lease of life and served . Even Vadam paste ( வடாம் மாவு , the tastiest on earth - I swear by its taste- if you have not tried, you are the unluckiest on the earth). It even went one step further that they also feed children in the hotel the way they are fed at home by mothers, and also giving balls of rice at the hands of children, with Kuzhambu trickled in the dip at the centre and making them eat. So we can hope children may be shown the moon , the crow, the dog, the cow and other animals and birds in the streets as a source of inspiration for them to open their mouths for being fed . It may also so happen that one of us may be used as பூச்சாண்டிs by the mothers to frighten their children to make them eat.
Apart from jokes, my sincere feeling as an ardent lover of typical South Indian foods, is it is a very good move that forgotten dishes will find a new life there. I am only sorry that I am nearly ten thousand miles away from that venue. So you have rightly guessed that my next trip to India will have in its itinerary several visits by me to தளிகை. I don't find in any restaurant, fast, quick, slow or very slow serving the different types of Uppumas and Sundals prepared at home decades back.
And what was common till a few years back is also fast disappearing. I mean the art and science of making traditional snacks (பட்சணங்கள்). While all of us remember Pizza, burger and so on, how many of us remember the names of our food items? I am glad to know that the world is round and so what was disappearing seems to be making one full round and coming back to satisfy our tongue buds.
We need the revival of more of these things rather than more and more of McDonald's, Pizza huts, Dominicos and so on.

Gossip is just one word, but it actually is derived from more than one word.
Before TV, phones, and other media, politicians of old had to depend on feedback to find out what was important to people in their jurisdiction. They did this by sending their assistants out to the local taverns and pubs, where most of the people hung out, and they would sip some ale, and listen to people's conversations, and thus learn what was on people's minds and what their concerns were.
They basically were told to "go sip some ale", thus the term "gossip" was coined.

When we hear someone say, "I heard it straight from the horse's mouth," we know what they mean. It's truth. You cannot contest it. Although being an odd phrase, since horses obviously don't talk, we understand that it means it is something you cannot deny, it's actual fact.
The truth is, horses have always been a prized commodity down through the ages. There were a lot of dishonest people who would try to sell less than quality horses to potential buyers. They would also lie about a horse's age.
