Dear Shriharsha,
Here is a synopsis of the previous posts. I will try to give such a synopsis to my subsequent posts.
Yoga means joining, merging. It refers to the merging of individual soul with the cosmic soul. There are four varieties of yoga. Of these Rajayoga is more popular nowadays than the other. It relaxes mind and gives relief from tensions. Some yoga techniques lull the mind to sleep and cause relaxation.
Sandhya vandanam is better than Rajayoga in that it not only provides relaxation but the mind is kept awake. It also develops one’s sraddha.
What is sraddha?
It has five constituents.
1 you must be very clear of your goal.
2 you must gather information as to how to reach the goal.
3 you must leave no stone unturned to reach your goal.
4 you must not do anything that would least impede in your reaching the goal.
5 you must have faith in the person who teaches you the ways and means to reach the goal.
This sraddha is the hallmark of Brahmins. This, in the past, made them efficient and shine in whatever sphere they entered. Even mediocre people can come up if they develop sraddha. This is not a hereditary trait. It is inculcated by the rituals in the families. There are 40 rituals or samskaras prescribed to be performed in each life. We have given up most of them. Even the other we are performing only perfunctorily. Even then the samskaras do inculcate sraddha.
Rituals prescribe many do’s and don’ts. By scrupulously following them we acquire the skill of being clear about the goal, following the procedures without fail and avoiding scrupulously the forbidden things. This skill is available to us in our day to day life also, by a process known as transfer of learning.
The peculiarity of sraddha is that if you perform a ritual with a little sraddha, it grows up. Even in the absence of other Samskaras, Sandhya vandanam, develops sraddha. It provides the basic training to merge actions with words, which leads on step by step to the final goal of merging the atma with the paramatma
