Going by the thefts, it appears that the existing security arrangements for these ancient idols at temples are not upto the mark and needs to be tightened.

[h=1]Ancient idols theft: 107 recovered sculptures displayed at TN temple[/h]

Pandhanallur%20idols.jpg.png

The idols have been displayed to allow the public to identify and check the originality of the idols belonging to the temples in their villages.

In a move to help with their identification, 107 recovered ancient idols have been kept for inspection by the public at Pasupatheeswarar temple in Pandanallur village near Kumbakonam.

On February 14, the statues were taken from the Nageswaraswamy temple in Kumbakonam to Pandanallur under the supervision of the Idol Wing of the Tamil Nadu Police.

“The arrangements have been made to allow the public to identify and check the originality of the idols belonging to the temples in their villages. In this regard, village elders and temple authorities from surrounding villages have been invited to the temple in Pandanallur,” explains Idol Wing DSP Ramesh.

Ancient bronze idols belonging to Kizhkattur Vajradhambeswar temple, Aaralur Vishwanadhaswami temple, Kurichi Mariamman temple and Amridhakadeswar temple, Neivaasal Thadakapuriswarar temple, Marathur Sarvalokanadhaswamy temple and Serugudi Virupaatishwarar temple have been kept on display, so that village elders and temple authorities can confirm that they are the original idols and have also not been altered in any way.

At the end of the display period, IG Pon Mannikavel will assess the results of the inspection and make a formal announcement to the public.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the gravity of the Nirav Modi scam and its impact on various banks across India sinks in, one is reminded of the Indian Bank loan scandal that broke out in 1995-96. At one point in time, media reports said the scandal had the potential to shake the then United Front government led by H D Deve Gowda. This was because leaders of the Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC), who had broken from the Congress to form the regional party in protest against P V Narasimha Rao’s decision to have an alliance with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) didn’t want the case to be pursued to its logical end.

The issue came to limelight after the 110-odd-year-old bank reported Rs 1,727 crore loss in the 1995-96 fiscal. Then, it was the biggest loss in the banking industry and the bank’s entire capital was wiped out. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) initiated a probe into the scandal. But in November 1996, Deve Gowda called up the then CBI chief Joginder Singh to tell him that the then finance minister P Chidambaram was unhappy with the agency’s action against Indian Bank executive director T P Karunandan. Deve Gowda pulled up Singh for violating rules that prohibited CBI from taking action against any official above the joint secretary level.

Makkal Needhi Maiam, which roughly translates to People’s Justice Forum, is the name of actor Kamal Haasan’s new political party. Haasan unveiled the name and symbol of his political outfit in front of a huge crowd at Madurai’s Ottakattai Grounds.

“This is a party for you, for the people. I am your instrument, you are the leaders, this is a crowd full of leaders,” Haasan said.
The party symbol — six arms interlinked around a star at the centre — is in the colours of red, white and black. The party flag, which is primarily white, carries the symbol along with the party name.

“People ask me what is this ‘Maiam’? And if I am left or right? That is why I kept the name ‘Maiam’, which means centre. Six hands in my party symbol represent six states, star in the middle represents people,” he said.

Banks adopting different yardsticks for fraudsters and the poor

[h=1]Madras HC slams banks for refusing loans to poor but giving the rich without collateral[/h]

Madras_HC_new_750x500.jpg

A student had applied for an education loan in 2011, which was denied. The HC asked the bank to pay a fine to her.

Ever since the Punjab National Bank scam involving Nirav Modi, billionaire and diamond jeweller came to fore, questions have been raised about how banks that roll the red carpet for the uber rich, treat the poor.

On Friday, the Madras High Court made a similar statement slamming banks for preferential treatment to billionaires. The HC slammed the Indian Overseas Bank on Friday for not sanctioning an education loan of Rs 3,45,000 to the daughter of a poor farmer.

The girl, who hails from Tiruvannamalai, had applied for an education loan in 2011-12 at the Kelur branch of Indian Overseas Bank to pursue her undergraduate degree. Her application was not considered, after which she went to court. A single judge issued a direction, asking the bank to consider the application based on the bona fide certificate issued by the college and issue the loan if eligible. Indian Overseas Bank then appealed against the order in 2012. The girl completed her education in 2015, but the case has been disposed of only now.

The court called the appeal an abuse of the process of court.

In the current scenario where there are mounting NPAs and massive frauds, the HC slammed banks for using a different yardstick for the normal citizen.

“Though the banks would sanction loans and letters of understanding to the billionaire businessmen and affluent, even without sufficient collateral security and would take action for recovery only when the scam spinning out of control, they are adopting a totally different yardstick in the case of middle-income group and poor people across India,” the court said.

The Division Bench consisting of Justice KK Sasidharan and Justice P Velmurugan ordered Indian Overseas Bank to pay a sum of Rs 25,000 to the girl within two weeks.

[h=1]‘What he stole is rice. The reason, hunger’: Shock over Kerala Adivasi man’s death[/h]
tribal_killed_attappadi_madhu_750.jpg

‘My son would have somehow survived in the forest, now he’s been lynched,’ Madhu’s distraught mother said.

The death of Madhu, a 30-year-old Adivasi man who was assaulted by a self-righteous mob in Attappadi in Kerala, has left a wound in the conscience of the state. Accused of stealing rice and groceries worth Rs 200, Madhu was confronted and assaulted with sticks by a group of men, who then handed him over to the police. And when the police were taking him to the station, Madhu vomited blood and died before he could get medical help.

As Kerala comes to terms with the ugly incident, one person who has been left completely devastated by this is Madhu’s mother, Malli.

“My son would have managed to survive somehow in the forest, by eating whatever he got. And I would have had the solace of knowing that he was alive. Now, he has been lynched,” Malli told Manorama News.

Aruna Reddy became the third Indian after Ashish Kumar and Dipa Karmakar to secure a medal at the world stage in Gymnastics as she won bronze in the World Cup event.
[/h]Aruna Budda Reddy, the 22-year-old from Hyderabad, Telangana, on Saturday created history when she became the first Indian gymnast to win a World Cup Series medal. Aruna bagged a bronze at the World Cup Gymnastics Series event in Melbourne, finishing third in vault with a score of 13.649 on the first day of the finals at the Hisense Arena.

Aruna made it to the vault final with the second-best score in qualifying. She had a score of 13.566 in her two attempts. Aruna had an excellent vault in her first attempt, bagging 4.600 for difficulty and 9.066 for execution. She could not repeat the same in her second attempt as her execution was not perfect and she got 4.800 and 8.666 respectively; thus finishing 0.383 points behind Australia’s Emily Whitehead (13.949).

Aruna is the third Indian gymnast after Ashish Kumar and Dipa Karmakar, who won bronze in the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games respectively, to win a medal in competitions organised by the international gymnastics federation (FIG). Her achievement is all the more credible because she was participating in the World Cup Series, which is an invitational event involving 16 selected gymnasts across the world.

Andhra marching ahead.......

[h=1]Andhra may get India’s first Hyperloop between Vijayawada and Amaravati[/h]

Hyperloop_%20Hyperloop%20Transportation%20Technologies_Facebook.jpg

A drive between the two cities which usually takes an hour, will be turned into a six-minute journey.

India's first hyperloop is likely to come up between Amaravati and Vijayawada and will begin soon, if all goes well.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of CII Partnership Summit in Visakhapatnam on Saturday, chairman and co-founder of Hyperloop Transportation Technologies, Bibop Gresta, said that travelling between the two cities would only be a matter of minutes.

He stated that Amaravati was a good place to start as the environment is unique, saying, "You have a density of population, a lack of infrastructure, and a need for a faster, sustainable and efficient way to move people and goods."

“Our technology is totally different. We have created a system that uses a combination of renewable energy to generate more electricity than it consumes. This ensures affordable cost of construction and maintenance... the capsule can move at a very high speed with very little energy, making the system highly efficient,” he was quoted as saying.

Land scam.... crisis deepens....

[h=1]Kerala HC raps Syro-Malabar Church head for saying Pope is their appellate authority[/h]
syro_malabar_church.jpg

The court said it is strange to hear that the law of the land is not applicable to the Cardinal, while looking into a land deal.

The Kerala High Court on Monday rapped the counsel of Syro-Malabar Catholic Church Cardinal Mar George Alencherry for pointing out to the court that as far as the Cardinal is concerned, the appellate authority is the Pope.

Taking a strong view of the Cardinal's counsel's contention, the court told him that it is strange to hear that the law of the land is not applicable to the Cardinal and said the court is looking if there was a breach of trust in the land deal.

The court made this observation when a petitioner sought a probe into the land deal done by the Cardinal which came under severe attack from the laity and even from a section of priests attached to the dioceses headed by the Cardinal.

The Ernakulam archdiocese in 2016 sold a three-acre piece of land in Kochi to repay a Rs 60 crore bank loan it had earlier taken to construct a medical college. The agent appointed by the church to facilitate the deal had estimated the value of the land at Rs 27.30 crore, but priests and local people claimed that the property's real value was at least Rs 80 crore.

The Cardinal's counsel told the court that as per the Canon Law, the Pope is the appellate authority to take action against a Cardinal.

[h=1]Flower Vendor, Dabbawalah and women passengers are the VIP to lnanugurate the FOBs.. a nice gesture[/h][h=1]VVIP Not Needed? Railways Gets Ordinary Citizens To Inaugurate Railway Bridges In Mumbai[/h]
5ec7ddd7-6f98-42a1-a692-fcdb5e6c8623.jpg

Ditching the popular culture of having officials and politicians inaugurate projects, the Western Railways (WR) and Central Railways (CR) have decided to rope in the aam aadmi to throw open foot-over-bridges (FoBs) on the Mumbai Suburban Railway.

Three FoBs were thrown open simultaneously at 3.30 pm at Kalyan and Currey Road on the Central line and Elphinstone Road on the Western line. While Union Minister for Railways Piyush Goyal, Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis and Minister of State for Defence Dr Subhash Bhamre were present at Elphinstone Road, they took a backseat, reports Mumbai Mirror.

Flower vendors use the Elphinstone FoB due to the presence of a flower market to the west. WR decided that a flower vendor would inaugurate the bridge that was built after a stampede last year killed 23 people. Among the victims was the son of a flower seller.

It is reported that AIRCEL is poised to file for bankruptcy in order to protect from creditors.

Aircel, country's last small mobile phone operator, files for bankruptcy

The last standing fringe operator Aircel, along with its units-Aircel Cellular and Dishnet Wireless, has filed for bankruptcy in the National Companies Law Tribunal (NCLT)- Mumbai on Wednesday. This last resort was taken when the Malaysian owned Maxis company failed to strike a truce with its lenders and shareholders.

"Post detailed discussions with the financial lenders and shareholders, the company could not reach consensus with respect to restructuring of its debt and funding," said Aircel in its statement on Wednesday.

The operator added that despite discussions and the invoking of a Strategic Debt Restructuring scheme in January 2018 pursuant to the then guideline of the Reserve Bank of India (“RBI”), no agreement could be reached. "Under current circumstances, especially after the 12 February 2018 RBI guidelines, the Company believes resolution process under the Code is an appropriate recourse," said the telcoom firm.

ET in its February 19 edition first reported that the Rs 15,500 crore debt laden telecom operator will be filing for bankruptcy.

"The Board of Directors acknowledged that it has been facing troubled times in a highly financially stressed industry, owing to intense competition following the disruptive entry of a new ..

The Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill, perhaps besides declaring offenders as fugitive, confiscate their movable and immovable properties also underlines strict action--similar criminal proceedings as the economic offender--for officials who collude with offenders and flee the country.

Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill : How Modi Government plans to prevent future absconders like Mallya

The rising instances of white collar crimes and offences have led the Modi Government to draft “Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill 2017”. This Bill is extremely significant and is a step towards protecting the Nation’s financial interest, especially in evasion cases such as of Vijay Mallya and Nirav Modi who have defaulted on repaying loans worth thousands of crore and have fled the country.

Union Law Ministry has approved “Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill” to empower the government to confiscate the property of economic offenders and defaulters who flee India. The bill seeks to deter economic offenders from evading the process of Indian law by fleeing the country

The bill was drafted in pursuance of Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s 2017-2018 Budget speech, promising legislative changes or even law to confiscate the assets of such fugitives. Finance Ministry had prepared the draft and sought Law Ministry’s opinion on it.
Who according to the bill, is classified as Fugitive Economic Offender? The Bill defines ‘Fugitive Economic Offender’ as an individual against whom warrant for arrest in relation to the economic offence has been issued and the person has left the country and refuses to return to India to face criminal prosecution. The burden of proof for establishing that the individual is a Fugitive Economic Offender rests on the authorities.

Manik Sarkar's left front grapples.....

The Last Red Citadel Crumbles To Dust

081630d1-11df-4dde-bd09-280a2acea302.jpg

Tripura was the last bastion of the Marxists (discounting Kerala that alternates between left and Congress rule). They were in power there for 25 long years since 1993. Before that, too, Tripura was ruled by the left for 10 years from 1978. The red fortress was, till even a year ago, deemed impregnable. Very few believed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could even put up a fight in Tripura and most used to peremptorily dismiss the BJP as a marginal player in that remote northeastern state bordering Bangladesh.

But the BJP has fought valiantly against all odds and demolished the red citadel, grounding it to dust. This is not only a crushing blow to the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M), but a spectacular victory for the BJP. Fighting the CPI(M) is, all said and done, not like fighting any other party. The CPI(M) in Tripura, like in West Bengal earlier, was a strong cadre-based party which didn’t mind going to extreme lengths to subdue opposition. It was entrenched in Tripura and had infiltrated into and rooted itself in the state bureaucracy and the police force, which used to function more like adjuncts of the CPI(M).

For the BJP, it was a multi-pronged battle that it had to wage. Staving off the CPI(M)’s cadre was only one part of the battle. The terror tactics of the CPI(M) had benumbed the people of Tripura with fear. Workers and leaders of the Congress, which was the major Opposition force in the state till three years ago, used to be regularly beaten up, rendered homeless, and even murdered. So widespread was the fear that people would even baulk at the idea of attending rallies of Opposition leaders. To take that fear out of people’s minds and convince them that the BJP could not only stand up to, but protect the people from, the Marxist terror machinery was a huge task.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Idol Wing of Crime Investigation Department (CID), Tamil Nadu police, has filed a case with Thanjavur West Police Station that panchalohaidols of king Raja Raja Chola and his wife Logamadevi have gone missing.

The Inspector General of the wing, A G Pon Manickavel, on Friday (2 March) filed the complaint on the idols, which were donated by king “Poigai Naadu Kizhavan Aadhithan Suriyanagiya Thennavan Moovenda Vellan” to king Raja Raja Chola 1,000 years ago when the Thanajvur Brihadisvara Temple was under construction.

The Times of India reported that the value of the king’s idol was Rs 60 crore and that of the queen, Rs 40 crore. The daily quoted Thajavur Superintendent of Police T Senthilkumar as saying that the idols could have been stolen 50 years ago. Investigation to recover the idols has begun.

The theft of the idols came to light only recently after former Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department Minister V V Swaminathan filed a case in the Madras High Court on the two missing idols and sought their recovery. The case was filed in November 2016. The Tamil Nadu Idol Wing took cue from the case filed by the former minister and began investigations.

Bengaluru’s helicopter taxi service is all set to take off on Monday with users able to fly from Kempegowda International Airport to Electronic City in 15 minutes, a journey that usually takes two hours by road.

The heli-taxi service is being introduced in the city by Thumby Aviation, which will operate two Bell 407 helicopters, that can seat up to six people.

The service will operate in two shifts during peak business hours – from 6.30 to 9.30 am and from 3.00 to 6.15 pm. Currently the service is only available between Bengaluru airport and Electronic City, while HAL Airport will be added as an additional destination in the next two weeks.

Speaking to TNM, an airport spokesperson said, “The shuttle service will start from the airport to Electronic City. The city has close to 90 helipads awaiting DGCA approval. As some of those get cleared, then we will slowly expand the service to other areas. The process of schedules, identifying locations and programs will begin now.”
