[h=1]Kerala woman’s forced conversion: She was held captive in Saudi for 80 days, say cops[/h]
lovejihad_0_0_0.jpg

The woman was kept captive in an apartment in Jeddah and managed a miraculous escape after her family, settled in Gujarat, sent her an air ticket via mail.

The 24-year-old woman from Kerala, who accused a Muslim man of forcible conversion to Islam, was under house arrest in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for more than 80 days, police officials have informed.

The revelations were made days after the officials arrested two persons from Ernakulam in connection with the case.
Police had started investigating the case after the woman moved the HC alleging forcible conversion in November 2017.

In a petition filed by the woman, she had also alleged that Muhammad Riyas, the key accused in the case, had taken her to Saudi Arabia and had plans to take her to Syria thereafter, to be sold as a sex slave to ISIS. She had also alleged that Riyas forced her to have sexual intercourse with him.

Police said that the woman was kept captive in an apartment after Riyas threatened to release her nude videos to the public.
The woman was also made to do data entry work in the apartment, police said, reports TOI.

The rural SP said, "Gruesome videos, including that of non-believers being stoned to death, were shown to her to instil hate towards other communities. The aim was to develop an affinity towards the activities of the terrorists. However, she refused to get brainwashed”, reports TOI.

Earlier, the woman had claimed that she managed to escape after she contacted her family settled in Gujarat.

Love India, desire to live there:DSC Prize winner Arudpragasam

Sri Lankan writer Anuk Arudpragasam, the winner of this year's DSC Prize for South Asian Literature, loves India and has a desire to live in the country once he is back from the US after completing his PhD.

Just 29 years of age, Arudpragasam bagged the USD 25,000 prize for his debut novel "The Story of a Brief Marriage",
which is set during the civil war in Sri Lanka. The award was presented to him at the Dhaka Lit Fest on November 18.
He is now going back to New York to complete his doctorate in philosophy at Columbia University.

"After that I would move back to South Asia, either India or Sri Lanka. I desire to live in India as I like India a lot," Arudpragasam tells PTI in an interview after his win here.

The fact that he has won a major literature prize for his first book is yet to sink in.

"It's like a bit too early to appreciate but obviously I am very happy. This is the first prize I won, the first real big recognition I got. I think I will feel the positive effects in the coming weeks and months, over a longer period of time. But this prize is a kind of security. You feel you can continue to write," he says.

For the past two years, Arudpragasam has been working on another novel.

"It is a structurally complicated novel, so it has taken more time to write. It is about yearning, about a feeling of incompleteness," he says.

There was more good news for the young writer. He was also named the winner of the Shakti Bhatt First Book Prize
2017. The prize carries a cash award of Rs 2 lakh and a trophy.

"The Story of a Brief Marriage" is published by Granta Books and in India by HarperCollins. It is focused on one individual and how the war affected this family, says Arudpragasam.

Passports may no longer serve as an address proof…bcos the last page of the passport will be discontinued, report says.
[h=1]MEA to issue orange passports for unskilled labourers[/h]

passport_PTI.jpg

India has decided to do away with the last page of the passport that contains the names of the spouse, parents and address of the passport-holder.

India has decided to do away with the last page of the passport that contains the names of the spouse, parents and address of the passport-holder while changing the colour of ECR passports, largely availed of by unskilled workers seeking employment abroad, the External Affairs Ministry said on Friday.

Responding to queries, External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said that a three-member committee comprising officials of his ministry and the Ministry of Women and Child Development was constituted to examine various issues pertaining to passport applications where mother or child had insisted that the name of the father should not be mentioned in the passport and also relating to passport issues to children with single parent and to adopted children.

"The report of the committee has been accepted by the ministry," Kumar said.

He said that one of the recommendations of the committee was that the External Affairs Ministry should explore the possibility of doing away with the printing of information contained in the passport such as names of father or legal guardian, mother, spouse, and address contained in the last page of the passport.

"The ministry has examined the recommendation of the Committee in consultation with various stakeholders, examined the guidelines of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regarding machine-readable travel documents and decided that the last page of the passport and other travel documents issued under the Passports Act, 1967, and Passport Rules, 1980, would no longer be printed," the spokesperson said.

[h=3]While the RTE Act makes education a fundamental right for every child between six and 14 years of age, it does not include any penal provisions in case parents or teachers do not adhere to its provisions.[/h]New Delhi: A sub-committee of the highest advisory body on education has reportedly recommended that parents should be punished if they do not send their children to school.

According to the Telegraph
, this suggestion was part of a draft report submitted to the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) on Monday, saying that the Right to Education Act needed to be looked at again. “The provisions of the RTE Act 2009 need to be re-looked as there is no penal provision for parents who do not send their children to school,” the report said, talking about the extension of the Act to pre-school and secondary education.

While the RTE Act makes education a fundamental right for every child between six and 14 years of age, it does not include any penal provisions in case parents or teachers do not adhere to its provisions.

coconut_tree-compressed.jpg

Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) supports innovative technology ideas that can help solve social or environmental issues while also having business potential.

A robot that cleans manholes. A machine that climbs coconut trees. A device that helps fishermen communicate even when they are miles away from land with no cellular range. Sounds unbelievable? Believe us, these are actual products developed by a few pioneering Kerala startups.

The Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM), which aims to create and sustain a startup ecosystem in the state, has been supporting innovative technology ideas that can help solve social or environmental issues while also having business potential.

"We believe that currently most of the startups work on problems which may not have large business potential. But many of our social problems have both business potential and can also have a social impact," says Saji Gopinath, the CEO of KSUM.

[h=1]India successfully test fires nuclear-capable Agni-V ballistic missile[/h]
agni_5_launch_PP_chaudhary_twitter.jpg

The test took place at the Abdul Kalam Island facility off the Odisha coast.

India on Thursday successfully test fired its indigenously developed intercontinental surface-to-surface nuclear-capable ballistic missile Agni-V -- the most potent and with the longest range in the Agni series - that can reach targets as far as Beijing.

The test took place at the Abdul Kalam Island facility off the Odisha coast. Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman tweeted about its success, congratulating its makers DRDO, the armed forces and the defence industry.

She said the successful test of the 5,000-km-range missile that can carry a one-tonne warhead, was "a major boost to the defence capabilities of our country".

"The Made in India canistered missile, having three stages of propulsion, was successfully test fired," she tweeted.

[h=1]Indian population is growing much faster in the north – and the south is paying the price[/h][h=2]The disparity in the rate of population growth could reshape the country politically, economically and culturally.[/h]
That India has a population problem is a truism every schoolchild learns. It was the first country in the world to adopt family planning, back in 1952. Yet, the problem persists: India is expected to surpass China as the most populous country on the planet by 2024, an incredible overtake given that in 1950, China’s population was one and a half times more than India’s.

This overarching narrative of India’s population explosion, however, becomes complicated as one zooms in. West Bengal’s fertility rate – the average number of children a woman would have in a given population – is lower than that of Norway, a nation worried about its social welfare system being stretched by an ageing population. Japan’s fertility rate of 1.5 is so low that the country is facing a socio-economic crisis. Yet, according to data released by the Union government last week, Kerala’s fertility rate is nearly the same – 1.56.

Clearly, then, it makes little sense to talk of India’s population problem without discussing the vast disparities that characterise how the population is growing across states. Have a look at this map:

[h=1]The world's attraction towards India is growing because government of India is doing good internally in every field. From 142nd place to 100th place in 'Ease of Doing Business' is a huge achievement in itself and the world acknowledges it[/h]Ease of doing business: Government targets 90 reforms to climb rank in World Bank's report

NEW DELHI: With four months left to implement reforms to make doing business easier, India is targeting 90 measures including quicker construction permits, simpler registration of new companies and Aadhaar-based identification of directors to achieve a higher ranking in the World Bank's annual listing.

This time, India has one month less to implement the steps because the World Bank has advanced the deadline for submission to May 1 for the next set of rankings, usually announced in October.

During a review by the Prime Minister's Office and the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, which is the nodal agency for ease of doing business ranks, several new reforms have been suggested by the finance, urban development and corporate affairs ministries, among others.

The Department of Financial Services will consider doing away with the requirement of providing a company seal to open open a bank account. It has been proposed that cash refunds on import of capital equipment should be given within a year instead of the current system of claiming input tax credit to improve ease of paying taxes.

India jumped a record 30 places to the 100th spot in the World Bank Doing Business rankings benchmarked to June 2017. It aims to be in the top 50.

[h=1]Bus fares hiked across the board in Tamil Nadu[/h][h=1]
MTC_bus_3222240g.jpg
[/h]CHENNAI, JAN 19:

The Tamil Nadu government has revised public and private bus transport fares with effect from Saturday, according to an official release. The rates have been revised for all services, including intercity and town and metro services across the State.
The fare hike follows a recent week-long strike by public transport workers that crippled transport services across the State.

Indexing method

The release said a committee will be constituted to revise fares in the future. The revision will be based on an indexing method that will take into account fuel prices, operation and maintenance costs, and wage hike.

It has also introduced fees to provide for accident compensation and toll charges as part of the fare.

The public transport corporations operate 22,509 buses and employ 1.40 lakh persons. Over 2 crore passengers use the services with buses travelling a total of 88.64 lakh km daily.

Running on loss

While operation and maintenance costs, fuel prices and wages have been going up, fares have not been revised since November 2011. Government-owned transport corporations are losing ₹9 crore daily and 75 per cent of the buses are more than six years old. The State government has compensated these corporations ₹ 12,059 crore in subsidy but they are burdened with accumulated losses of over ₹20,488 crore.

The government has pointed out in the release that the Madras High Court in an interim order on November 24, 2017, had said that fare revision is inevitable, given the economic factors.

[h=1]A significant development…[/h][h=1]Lockheed Martin proposes making custom-built fighter jets in India[/h]

lockheed-martin_660_012018073837.jpg

American aerospace and defence major Lockheed Martin has proposed to manufacture custom-built F-35 fighter jets in India, which its officials say will give Indian industry a unique opportunity to become part of the world's largest fighter aircraft ecosystem.

"We plan to introduce two new words into the lexicon of international fighter aircraft manufacturing: 'India' and 'exclusive'," Vivek Lall, vice president, strategy and business development, at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics told PTI in an interview.

"India-specific state-of-the-art fighter production in India will be exclusive, something that has never before been presented by any other fighter aircraft manufacturer, past or present. There will also be a significant export market available for Indian-made fighters," he said.

Lall, an Indian American who last year was instrumental in the decision of the Trump administration to sell top-of- the-line unarmed drones from General Atomics, in his previous capacity.

Modi's amended enemy property law gives jitters to China

modi.jpg

China fears India can confiscate assets of its companies, such as Xiaomi and Lenovo, if the two countries enter a military conflict.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The amendment of the 49-year-old Enemy Property (Amendment and Validation) Act after which the Narendra Modi government plans to auction more than 9,400 properties of those who took citizenship of China has made China jittery.

Chinese investment in India has grown rapidly in the past few years. China fears India can confiscate assets of its companies, such as Xiaomi and Lenovo, if the two countries enter a military conflict. Last year, Indian and China faced off for months over construction by Chinese troops in the Doklam region. Though the conflict was resolved, tension persists in India-China relations.

"If China and India become involved in a military conflict, the assets of Chinese companies doing business in India may be confiscated by the Indian government," said an article in state-run Chinese news outlet Global Times.

It says economic reforms introduced by PM Modi have made India an attractive investment destination but the amended law can scare away Chinese investors.

[h=1]Indian Railways is gearing up..[/h][h=1]Indian Railways to Introduce World Class High-speed Trains Soon, to Replace Rajdhani, Shatabdi[/h]

3a7e486b230a4a0e0355888764904a67

New Delhi, Jan 19: While Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream project – Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train – is a few years away, the Indian Railways is all geared up to introduce a couple of high-speed trains. The two trains – Train 18, Train 20 – would replace Rajdhani and Shatabdi trains.

The world-class trains, which would be fastest in India when introduced, are being developed at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai. According to reports, Railways is planning to roll out two ‘Train 18’ by August this year.

Rajdhani, Shatabdi to be Phased Out

Sudhansu Mani, GM – ICF, said that while ‘Train 18’ would replace Shatabdi trains, ‘Train 20’ will take place of Rajdhani trains in a phase-wise manner. Train 20 is likely to be rolled out on tracks by 2020.

Mani said that during trial runs the two trains clocked 176 km per hour speed. However, they will run at a maximum speed of 170 km per hour when commercial operations start. Gatiman Express, the current fastest train in the country, has a maximum speed of 160 km per hour.

The Design and Features

The upcoming high-speed trains will be equipped with world-class features. ICF’s Chief Engineer (Design) Sree Nivas said that the trains will be propelled by six motor coaches which would help in faster acceleration.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With an eye on India’s planned transition to using only electric vehicles by 2030, several Chinese bus manufacturers have evinced interest to start operations in India, reports Mint. At least five manufacturers including BYD and Changsha Sunda New Energy Vehicles Technologies have had discussions with the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association (ACMA) and the Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV) said the report.

Shenzen-based BYD had earlier supplied buses to the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) in 2014 and currently offers buses in India through its partnership with Hyderabad-based Goldstone group. This partnership has already supplied buses that are used in Mumbai and Himachal Pradesh.

Persons aware of the development said that Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers see a huge potential in India with the government’s plans to go completely electric by 2030 and also said that battery-operated buses were slowly seeing less traction in China.

They also said that since many of these manufacturers had the capacity to build 10,000 buses per year, it would help Indian suppliers who could tie-up with them.

It appears that MTC has no option except to hike its fare for its survival

[h=1]TN bus-fare hike: Why MTC has the potential to become India’s best transport service [/h]

It already runs one of the most efficient transport services in India, despite an old fleet and unrevised rates. With the fare hike, things are looking even better.

For the first time in its history, the Tamil Nadu government decided to separate political ambitions from bus fares. Last week, not only did it increase fares after six years, it also announced that the fares will now be decided on an “indexing methodology”, a phrase that was buried deep in its own press release.

What it means is that fares will now depend on fuel and lubricant costs, as well as establishment costs. “We are borrowing heavily from how Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh fix their fares. The hikes will be minimal - from 50p to Re 1. It won’t happen every year. Whenever there is a necessity, we will review our expenditure and fix the fares accordingly,” said Additional Chief Secretary to the TN Government (Transport), PWC Davidar.

The fare was last hiked in November 2011. This was done after a gap of 15 years – the hike before that was in 2001. Prices of commodities like transport, milk and electricity were always dependent on the current political scenario of the state. Even so, Chief Minister E Palanisamy was quoted to have said that he has allowed it with a “heavy heart”.
