Here is about Avvaiyar and Aathichudi by Wikipedia:

Avvaiyars (Tamil: ஔவையார்; English: Respectable Women) was the title of more than one poet who was active during different periods of Tamil literature.

The Avvaiyar were some of the most famous and important female poets of the Tamil canon. Abithana Chintamani states that there were three female poets titled Avvaiyar.

Among them, Avvaiyar I- lived during the Sangam period (c. 1st and 2nd century CE) and had cordial relation with the Tamil chieftains Paari and Athiyaman. She wrote 59 poems in the Puṟanāṉūṟu.[SUP][1][/SUP]

Avvaiyar II - lived during the period of Kambar and Ottakoothar during the reign of the Chola dynasty in the 13th century. She is often imagined as an old and intelligent lady by Tamil people. She wrote many of the poems that remain very popular even now and are inculcated in school textbooks in Tamil Nadu. These books include a list of dos and don'ts, useful for daily life, arranged in simple and short sentences.

I am giving hereunder layman's meaning of the version.

தையல் சொல் கேளேல்
don’t listen to women!

Bharathi was a man fought for women liberation. he propagated
தையலை உயர்வு செய்
Keep women in high position.

'தையல் சொல் கேளேல் - Thaiyal sol kelel - means ‘don’t listen to girls /Don't listen to the designing.’
There may be other interpretations too.

This is like dialect of a North Indian + Chennai Senthamizh!! :dizzy:

It should be written clearly as:

vaNNAnukku vaNNAththi mElE Asai; :hug: vaNNaththikkuk kazhudhai mElE Asai!

P.S: Don't know why women are degraded so badly! These should be words of a man, for sure!

Thanks for the translation. It was a response to Renukaji's pictures. It is a slippery slope, once you start it you have to expect it. I was just repeating what is quoted often, and you see it everyday.

If we separate avvaiyAr's words as 'thaiyal sol kEL El', it will mean that 'Hey! Listen to what a woman says!'

But the writer of the blog says that the following chart will explain the line better. A woman's seven stages are as follows:

1. 5 -7 years ... pEdhai

2. 8 - 11 yrs ... pedhumbai

3. 12 -13 yrs ... mangai

4. 14 - 19 yrs ... madandhai

5. 20 - 25 yrs .... arivai

6. 26 - 31 yrs ... therivai

Girls in the stages 1 and 2 are known as 'thaiyal' and will be immature. So don't listen to those girls.
