The Nation's Rajpath which is a ceremonial boulevard that is the center of attraction during the Republic day became Yogpath with thousands congregating for celebrating International Yoga Day (June 21) with PM Modi leading the nation performing Vajrasan and Padmasan

The celebrations are happening in 192 countries!

A great achievement for India on the cultural front with United Nations taking the lead in this stellar initiative!

[h=3][/h] New Delhi, June 21, 2015 [h=1]Rajpath has become 'yogpath', PM tells nation[/h]
At the commencement of what is possibly the largest congregation to practise Yoga, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared Rajpath had become 'Yogpath' (the path of Yoga) on Sunday.

"Did anyone ever think that Rajpath can become 'Yogapath'?" Mr. Modi said.

He said the country was not only celebrating a day but training the human mind to begin a new era of peace, amity.

Adding that Yoga was much more than a system of exercise, the Prime Minister said the ancient system would find its way to all corners of the world through the event and thanked the United Nations for its efforts towards the same.

“For most of the people, yoga is just a physical exercise. This is the biggest mistake.... Had this been the case, children working in circuses could have been called ’yogis’ Hence yoga is not only about making the body flexible,” he said, while addressing the participants.

The Prime Minister expressed hope that the atmosphere built in favour of yoga in the country will continue in future as well.

He also said that it is not important for him where this ancient technique originated and where all it has reached.

tai_chi_chuan_01.jpgYoga and Tai-chi:

Similar to Yoga Asanas, China has spread Tai Chi excercises to its Citizens. Tai Chi is recognised by the Chinese Government and many Health Institutes around the world as the form of exercise that offers one of the greatest all-round benefits to health. It is believed that Tai-Chi came from India when Budddhism was brought to China around Seventh century AD. Yoga Techniques and concepts of mental and spiritual awareness were introduced by the Buddhist masters.

The PM has the ability to galvanize people for any specific purpose.

It will be good if he is able to do this for constructive purpose at a faster pace.

Over 20 million Americans practice yoga boosting $27 billion market

Americans are spending over $11 billion a year on yoga classes and gear, up 88% from 2008

Press Trust of India | Washington June 21, 2015

While the world celebrated the first International Yoga Day today, over 20 million Americans have already been practicising the ancient Indian meditative exercise, fuelling the whopping USD 27 billion yoga industry in the country.

Years ago, when the US was first introduced to the 5,000- year-old Indian physical, mental and spiritual practice that aims to transform body and mind, more and more number of Americans have resorted to it for health benefits and no more confuse yoga with yogurt.

A whopping 20.4 million people reportedly practice yoga in the US, a significant increase from the 15.8 million yoga practitioners in 2008.

The business of yoga is growing fast, too. Americans are spending over USD 11 billion a year on yoga classes and gear (pants, mats, bags, blocks), up 88 per cent from 2008, according to media reports.

With an increasing number of yoga practitioners comes an increasing number of places to practice. Bikram, Ashtanga and Vinyasa yoga studios can be found all across America, but are more concentrated in some states than others.

Alaska hosts the most yoga studios per capita out of every state in the US, despite its minuscule population, Huffington Post reported in March.

"Yoga is becoming an increasingly popular form of exercise in the US and it is imperative to systematically examine its health benefits, especially the mental health benefits that this unique mind-body form of activity may offer," said Edward McAuley, Illinois kinesiology and community health professor.

Many breweries have also joined the yoga bandwagon hosting 'happy hour events' where one can attend a yoga class and grab a beer at an attractive price.

Washington's Hellbender Brewing Company has launched a "Detox to Retox", a monthly summer series of yoga, tastings and discounts, while Capitol City Brewing Company offers "Asana & Ale" in Shirlington, Washington Post reported last week.

Yoga, Captain-style

Yoga, Captain-style

On International Yoga Day, it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s friend and ally Vijayakant, the actor-turned-politician, who stole the show in Tamil Nadu. Organising a yoga camp at his party headquarters, Vijayakant was seen more giving instructions to his partymen, in his usual bossy style, than doing yoga. Sitting by his side, his wife Premalatha was seen correcting him a couple of times. He also complained of muscle pull as he tried to sit like a yogi. Better, you watch his expressions in the videos that as usual, went viral across various social media platforms. After all, he happens to be the most prominent political personality of Tamils among social media buffs here for quite sometime.

Good Health is a god given gift. A healthy new born child can suddenly become ill. Medicines are not cure for everybody. Active people are healthy and idles are either not healthy or going to become ill. Banks give you loan if you prove that you have enough money to pay them interest. Yoga is good for healthy who just use only their brain and not their bran. It must be as good as auto-urine therapy. I doubt yoga business will shut down pharma business. Does anybody know Iyengar or remember him? I think he propagated YOGA to the west and to the WORLD. Is he losing his place? I cannot say.

Though it is colloquially called 'Yoga' nowadays, these aasanas form part of Hatha yoga which is believed to have been revealed by Siva to Parvati in absolute secrecy. Unless these aasanas are taught (and learnt) with extreme care, the student is likely to suffer irreparable damage to his/her health. I know of two such cases one boy becoming acute asthmatic and another getting some (unrevealed) problems and opting to remain unmarried although both were normal when they went for studying the aasanas.

Since GOI is now making it (Yoga) compulsory in Central schools, there should be proper support system to take care of things going wrong also, I feel.

Swami Vivekananda predicted and strongly wished that India will become a 'vishva guru'. Modi in some of his election rallies pledged to work for the same. he offered to work for restoring the religious, cultural, spiritual links many countries in the east and west of india shared with india. The next step is to restore and develop hindu, budhdhist and jain religious places in these countries and promote religious and cultural tourism. Bharat as before can achieve fluidic spread eschewing military and economic interference.

A gist of the Hatha Yoga from Wikipedia is given below:

QUOTE

Hatha yoga also called haṭhavidya is a branch of yoga. The word haṭha denotes a system of physical techniques supplementary to a broad conception of yoga.[SUP][1][/SUP] [SUP][2][/SUP]

With its origins in Ancient India, Hindu tradition believes that Shiva himself is the founder of hatha yoga.

In the 20th century, hatha yoga, particularly asanas (the physical postures), became popular throughout the world as physical exercises, and is now colloquially termed "yoga".

According to legend, Lord Shiva is credited with propounding hatha yoga. It is said that on a lonely island, assuming nobody else would hear him, he gave the knowledge of hatha yoga to the Goddess Parvati, but a fish heard the entire discourse, remaining still throughout. The fish (Matsya) later became a siddha and came to be known as Matsyendranath. Matsyendranath taught hatha yoga to his disciple Gorakshanath.
