Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead school children, government officials, diplomats, army personnel and NCC cadets for a 35-minute demonstration of 15 yoga asanas at Raj Ghat on June 21, the day designated as International Yoga Day by the UN. The event has been registered as an entry into the Guinness Book of World Records, under "largest yoga demonstration/class (45,000) at a single venue' and if sources are to be believed, every inch of preparation has been directed to make the event a grand spectacle.

Yoga set to take China by storm as renowned Indian gurus gather in ancient city

Yoga set to take China by storm as renowned Indian gurus gather in ancient city

19 June 2015

This ancient city of mountains is famed in China as the home of tai chi — the popular Chinese martial art exercise.

But in the past few days, Dujiangyan has undergone a remarkable transformation into China’s yoga capital, as thousands of Chinese have descended here to learn what is known in China as ‘India’s tai chi’.

As hundreds of yoga activities are held the world over to mark the first International Yoga Day, organisers say the biggest event being held outside of India will be in Dujiangyan, outside Chengdu, the bustling, modern capital of Sichuan province.

Twenty of India’s most renowned gurus representing different yoga schools, from Ashtanga yoga and Krishnamacharya yoga mandiram to Iyengar yoga, are in Dujiangyan to hold workshops ranging from the benefits of pranayama and surya shakti to ‘yoga for pregnancy’.

On Thursday, the second of five days of intense workshops, a sprawling gymnasium that can hold a thousand people was filled to capacity to listen to the well-known Ashtanga yoga practitioner from Mysuru, R. Sharath Jois, the grandson of pioneering Ashtanga guru K. Pattabhi Jois.

“Now yoga is new in China, but there has been an immense response,” he told MAIL TODAY. “Everyone wants to learn traditional practice, so it is getting started here now. Hopefully, in a couple of years more and more yoga practitioners will be here.”
Danger lurks in sky on yoga day

Amidst massive preparations for International Yoga Day, intelligence agencies have warned of a possible aerial attack. A circular issued by the Intelligence Bureau, a copy of which is available with India Today, said terror organisations may try to create trouble during the main event, which will be held at the national Capital’s Rajpath on Sunday, June 21.

Following the IB alert, Delhi Police has banned flying of kites, balloons, glider, micro light objects during the program. Use of drones for aerial photography has also been banned to ensure effective defence measures. Roof-top snipers will be deployed to shoot down any threatening flying object, police officials said.
Three-tier security

A Republic Day-like security arrangement has been put in place for the event. The Delhi Police has appointed its top officers for the job. Three-tier security blanket will cover the capital as more than a dozen deputy commissioners and almost three dozen assistant commissioners have been roped in to look after the security arrangements at Rajpath in the heart of the city. Moreover, various commandants and DIGs of paramilitary forces will be in charge of the security at India Gate.
“It will be a mini Republic day for the Delhi Police in terms of security on yoga day. The security arrangements will be foolproof as Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with other Union ministers will perform yoga for 45 minutes. Also, we are expecting more than 30,000 visitors to India Gate,” a senior Delhi Police official said.

According to sources, the prime minister will flag off the event at Rajpath at 7.00 AM. The exercise is also aimed at creating a Guinness Book record. All the BJP office-bearers, ministers, elected representatives and chief ministers would participate in the event. The party has also directed all its state units to organise the event in each district across the country.

Almost 4,000 police personnel and 1,500 traffic policemen have been roped in for the event. Anti-aircraft weapons will provide air cover to the event following a terror threat and the Indian Air Force will coordinate with security agencies for the same, police said. Delhi Police have also installed CCTV cameras across India Gate, including all the important junctures apart from elaborate sanitisation of the area which has been underway.

According to the Delhi Police, only labelled vehicles of invitees and bona fide residents of these areas shall be permitted to enter the area on June 21 from 2 am till the event comes to an end at 10 am.
