Nammazvar spent thirty one years under the Tamarind tree (puliya maram) at Thirukkurunkudi. He did yoga for sixteen years under the tree. The tree was considered an incarnation of Adi Seshan( snake bed of Vishnu). Like Buddha attained great wisdom under the the Peepal (Bodhi) tree, Nammalzvar attained all Siddhis under the tamarind tree. When he was young he had many problems in his growth. He was not a normal child.So his parents did what Perumal asked them to do. Nammazvar was one of the greatest Tamil saints.

கணிகண்ணன் is his name.

Thirumzisai alwar bestowed youth to an old lady who was doing kainkaryam to him. On hearing this the king of Kanchi wanted his disciple கணிகண்ணன் tobring the AlwAr to his court. கணிகண்ணன் replied that the Alwar was in a yogic trance and he cannot come and the king was furious and exiled him. கணிகண்ணன் informed his Guru-Thirumzhisai Alwar and the Alwar yadotkAri Perumal in thiruvehka . AlwAr went behind Kanikannan and Perumal went behind AlwAr.

So when Perumal left behind the Alwar, the whole city of Kanchi plunged in darkness, and the king had to request the Azwar who in turn
asked him to request his sishya and finally one by one returned back to Kanchi from ஒரிருக்கை.
But perumal was waiting for the Alwar to say நீயுமுன்றன் பைந்நாகப் பாய்படுத்துக்கொள் and after this the Lord took his சயன திருக்கோலம்.

since he heeded to Alwars words he is called Yadotkari and சொன்ன வண்ணம் செய்த பெருமாள்.

I read an account of the return of the trio whereby after returning to the original abode, the perumAL kept standing. When the AzhwAr asked him why he was standing, perumAL replied "you didn't tell me to lie down". Then upon the order of the AzhwAr to lie down perumAL spread his snake bed in the opposite direction. The head of the Lord is to the right of the audience while every other reclining posture has the head to the left of the audience. It is said, half in jest, that the Lord forgot which way he was lying down before He left the place acceding to the wishes of His devotee in a rush!
