Folks,

There are several great saints who are unknown to public but still live with us.

There are several saints living in Tiruvannamalai who are really very simple, doesn't bother about materialism, doesn't like publicity and live in remote caves. How they manage their food on day to day is a big question .

Some of my friends have told me that they have met several such people in Haridwar, Rishikesh and other parts of Himalayas.

They are beyond religion, caste, language or race and are true living saints.

They live a life as envisioned by Saint Thiagayya' s Endaro Mahanubhavulu. Full meaning of the song is available in the following url

Endaro

I want to discuss about such living saints in this forum.

I request members not to bring fraudulent God men into this thread and we will restrict it only to real great saints who are not generally visible to public.

Let me start with my personal experience with one such great personality whom I have personally met.

Swamy Anvananda

Swamy Anvananda turned down materialistic life and dedicated himself to spirituality.

His earlier name was Parthasarathy. He was born to Late Srinivasa Iyengar, one of the earliest Presidents of the Congress Party during freedom movement. Mahatma Gandhi was much junior to him and use to stay with him during his Chennai visit.

Parthasarathi did Bar at Law in London and had an excellent legal practice in Chennai. He founded Prithivi Life Insurance company during British rule and was its Managing Director till it was nationalised and taken over by Life Insurance Company of India.

He had enormous wealth and had a luxurious life. He had children also. He was not very much attached to religion also. He had the habit of collecting idols, crafts etc and one day he collected an idol of a Hindu Goddess from a fisherman. Some how he got attracted to the idol and placed it in his compound under a tree.

He was interested in Tamil Literature and once Vallimalai Sachidanda Swamigal visited him after his trip to Vaishno Devi temple in Kashmir. He told Parthasarathi that the idol resembles Vaishavi and your destiny is with Goddess Vaishnavi.

Parthasarathi's interest in the idol increased eventhough he was against idol worship throughout his earlier life.

One fine morning he left his family and the luxurious home with the idol and went to their mango farm at Tirumullaivayil. It was a forest like environment in those days. It it a forty acre plus area with full of mango trees, snakes and other poisonous creatures.

He installed the idol in the farm with the help of Vallimalai swamigal. No agama sastras were followed for installation and only Tiruppugazh was recited at the installation ceremony.

He turned to Sanyasi life and was known as Swami Anvananda.
He lived in a thatched roof shed where snakes use to cross regularly. He never had proper food. He lived a very very ordinary life in the farm and refused to return to normal life in spite of repeated requests from his family members and fellow businessman. Late Sri Santhanam S/O T.V.Sundaram Iyengar is his close friend and use to visit him regularly. Whatever property he had in his personal name, he spent on charities. He asked his erstwhile family members to take all the properties in the joint name .

He died in the early eighties and refused to return home in spite of his sickness and old age. An orphan boy Palani (not belonging to TB community) helped him in his old age. He arranged Upanayanam for the boy and also marriage subsequently. Palani is fully devoted to the temple and is still living in the temple premises carrying out the job of his master.

He made the temple open to all irrespective of religion, caste or race. He allowed ladies of all caste and religion to perform poojas directly to Devi. Today the area has grown into a full fledged town whereas those days reaching the place itself was a big problem. The temple has become an important place of worship in Chennai.

Even if the crowd is large, no paid darshan is practiced. Archanas are not done on individual names and all are performed in the name of Goddess Vaishnavi only.

One of his sisters joined him later after spending her life on social work and died few days after the death of Anvananda ji.

His daughter Vasanthi, also joined him later in life and lived in a simple cottage in the temple premises. She died just few years back.

It is a case study of a great personality who moved from materialistic life to spiritual life.

Details about the temple is available in the following weblink

Sri Vaishnavi Shrine, Aavadi (Chennai)

All the best

Dear RVR anna,

I am going to ask you a question here...dont get me wrong..i dont want to be rude but at the same time i really want to ask you this...

Anna, how come you are so sure that the Saints and Gurus you rever are true and those you do not are false...
What are your criteria for determining this?

Dear Renu,

I am always after real gurus who gave up lust, materialistic desires, lead an ultra simple life and were not after fame or publicity.

Sri Anvananda was attracted to me because

1. He gave up all his wealth for charities. He himself had a lucrative legal practice and business which he gave up voluntarily.

2. He voluntarily gave up married life and attachments to his family.

3. He was practically living in a jungle type environment with no proper food and place to sleep

4. He never went after publicity. Even during his life time, he had a great friend in media baron Late Sri Ramnath Goenka (Owner of Indian Express group of publications). But he never allowed his activities published.

5. He never claimed that he is a Guru. He is highly learned and has built a huge library in the temple premises. He himself has written a book about `Saint Arunagirinathar' which he has not sold to any publisher for royalty.

As one associated with the temple founded by him, some of my friends attribute lot of good happenings in their lives to him and the Goddess. But we never claim anything as miracle or supernatural power. We never publicize anything. Even the website link which I have given is published by Murugan devotees organisation and not by us. Since Vallimalai Swamigal has installed the deity, Murugan devotees have written about the temple.

We just surrender to the lotus feet of Goddess Vaishnavi and inspiration of our master Swami Anwananda ji. We all take life and happenings as it come without any inhibitions.

Even today there are really true devotees who have surrendered their life at the service of lotus Devi and temple but not known to the public.

There are so many great saints living at present at Tiruvannamalai, Haridwar, Rishikesh and other places of Himalayas who may be like a Seshadri Swamigal, Ramana Maharishi and other great personalities. My object of this thread is to identify such `great saints' who are unknown to public.

I wish our members bring such great saints to this forum so that all of us can learn from their life. Since they don't teach anything (Since they don't claim themselves as Acharyas or Gurus) to public directly we can just learn something from their experiences.

All the best

Dear RVR anna,

What you are saying has many points...but these type of saints are more of the ones who are on their own journey and do contribute to welfare of the loka and samastha in a subtle way...thats fine....

but there are many so called high profile ones..who actively contribute to the welfare of the loka and samastha by imparting knowledge as a Bodhaka to knowledge parched Sadhakas...
Not only that ...they have Specialist medical care given free to everyone,Chennai and Andhra pradesh water projects...
Seva is done in villages...single mums(widows) are taught sewing, etc for earning a livelyhood..
Vedas and religous knowledge are taught to anyone regardless of nationality, race, caste, sex etc...No one need to blame any mutt also for not imparting Vedas...

Emphasis is given to Manava Seva...as the saying goes..Manava Seva is Madhava Seva...
Public are actively encouraged to participate in Seva activities...
Education given a new name...called Educare where Human Values are instilled so that we dont have educated empty individuals...like what the whole world is so full of now...

It might look as if these Divinities are sorrounded by wealth..but is it for them?
I am sure we can sit in a bank locker room and still not be attached to even one note there...

after all what is money....Burn it.... you only get ashes...

Dr. Renuka ji,

Do you know something????

A man who is suffering for the basic necessities of livelihood namely, cloth, food and shelter ( Roti, Kapada Aur Makaan) will adore a God Man and his trust through which one is benefited with Educare and Medical Aids.

A man who is self sufficient and self dependent, will be searching of isolated hermits in jungles and caves...

This is the basic human psychology....Exceptions do exists.

As per one's needs, one follows the spirituality. As long as spirituality is accepted, respected and followed, both are equally benefited.

There are enough literature in Sanskrit, Tamil and other languages which one can read, learn, understand and follow if they want.

There are enough temples to worship

There are traditional mutts/adheenams etc which propagate their respective philosophies. In Tamilnadu for example, Ramalinga Vallalar movement is there almost in every village. Vallalar lived in the ninth century but his movement is continued even today.

Vallalar.Org - Thiru Arutprakasa Vallalar

Ramakrishna Mutt is doing wonderful service in the field of education and health care throughout India even in remote villages.

But all the above have some amount of transparency in its working and is not developing personality cult.

Personally I am also associated with a school run by Swamy Dayananda saraswathi in tsunami affected area near Chennai were mostly students of all religions of fishermen community are studying. There is a local swamiji running day to day administration but inspite of my repeated requests, they are not bringing transparency to the entire working.

Personally I feel transparency is a must for any mutt, temple, adheenam or self proclaimed God men.

Most of the temples are controlled by Government and hence are subject to independent audit and review by Parliament.

There are news items appearing regularly that most of the God men are involved in `hawala rocket'. May be drug money is also routed through this God men. Politicians, film personalities, corrupt officials are all associated with these type of God men.

It is believed that these God men are worth several billion dollars. How they managed this much money. In the absence of correct answers, we have to presume that they are ill gotten. To cover up these activities, they engage in some charitable activities which is highlighted every where.

Personally I know some people who are cheated by these God men but they are afraid to open out due to fear.

Naxalites collect money by extortion but spend it on poor. Veerappan has spent the money collected by force and other illegal methods on poor people. We treat them as out laws but how can we worship these God men as spiritual Gurus.

If we go back to history, a Guru will evolve eventually for a real seeker of truth. For Ramana Maharishi, Seshadri Swamigal evolved as his Guru at a later stage.

These type of self proclaimed Gurus do more damage to Hindu religion. The recent episode of Nityananda has become a laughing stuff for the baiters of Hindu religion.

BBC episode of Puttabarthi Saibaba has done enough damage to our religion at international levels. If Saibaba and his followers are really interested in doing good for our religion, they should have proved that the tape is doctored and forced the BBC to apologize.

All these God men keeps silent and it amount to admitting the mistake. It only confirms the Tamil proverb `மௌனம் சம்மததிருக்கு அறிகுறி'

Catholics have single global head and erratic priests are taken into task. Today's paper carried the following article

Irish Catholic head apologises over paedophile priest failure | World news | guardian.co.uk

In the Hindu religon (or Sanathana Dharma as you may call it), there is no single command and every thing is left to natural forces. Only we have to be alert and to the best possible extent alert others.

Renuka,
I think you are talking about a religious social worker alone, not a saint.
Some Guruji's talk themselves as God or Avatar and people literally pray them. Even the enlightened souls whose soul is merged with the Supreme Brahman (Those who have reached Advaitha heights) cannot claim to be God themselves. If we beleive in such school of thought, we are all equally Gods and we will end up praying ourselves. First of all, anyone who claims to be a saint should not care for his name to be propagated. Swami Nithyananda was given free publicity and glorifying by the media and finally he was brought down to ground also by the same media. This Swamiji cared for his name to be propagated so that he got lot of followers and thereby became rich.
In my opinion Kanchi Mahaperiyvaa was one saint who lived the most simple living. He has not made schools, hospitals or other social activities. Saints should work to elevate man to higher spiritual levels and not for providing material needs. Unfortunately, more people are thronging to the one who provides more and more material pleasure than those who provide spiritual elevation.

Sri Amarkrishnan ji,

I could very well understand and accept your points....

I would like to share some of my view in this regard

During Kanchi Mahaperiyawal's era, the things were totally different. Hinduism was strong in the sense that people were much into spiritual life and Hindu traditional and cultural values were regarded and followed by majority of Hindus.

Now in the present days, there is a drastic change in our society. Many Hindus are converting into other religion. Many Hindus started questioning their own traditional practices and principles. Many Hindus are ridiculing their own systems and in the pretext of advancement and progress changing their life style to the extent of loosing their own cultural identity.

Whether it’s wrong or right is a different issue.

But to keep the human values up, to promote social responsibility, and welfare activities some sort of trusts are required with a spiritual touch for the betterment of society in general and for the Hinduism to grown and sustain.

Through such trusts many down trodden/economically week people have benefited a lot. Politicians are hardly doing anything for the society. If at all they do something, they too are attaining some personal benefits out of it.

We also know that there are many bad/negative forces in the country, operating against the society and tarnishing the image of the trusts and trying to ridicule Hinduism in total.

Saints can be revered to the extent of attaining spiritual growth of oneself. It can not help in uplifting the society constructively. Following saints has its own importance and is a different path.

If at all some sort of monetary manipulations are carried out for the benefits of politicians and other business tycoons through some trusts, common public can keep going utilizing the benefits of such trusts.

Such political and business scandals can never be ruled out in India.

If a large scale genuine trust needs to survive for the betterment of the society, such trusts are pressurized to head to the request of some corrupted politicians ulterior motives

If some of the well-to-do people are contributing for the social cause, motivated by some God men through spiritual preaching, why should we consider them as a social stigma?

We need such trusts as well. as long as the society in large is not suffering/deteriorating because of the existence of such trusts.

Ravi,

I fully accept that we should promote social activities like schools, hospitals etc.

I am also involved with such activities in a small way in tsunami affected area helping fishermen community of all the religions.

But unfortunately our community organisations doesn't bring transparency in the working and fund management.

If they are more transparent, we can organise lot of funds to start similar schools elsewhere.

Due to lack of transparency, I am personally constrained to restrict myself and move forward.

Whatever said Christian missionaries have perfected the art of managing such institutions which we have emulate.

All the best

Durga,

I very much remember our discussions earlier. Shall we keep 14th April,2010 (Tamil New Year day) tentatively for the visit. We can visit Thiruninravur (Vaishnava Divya Desam) and Thirumullaivayil Maasilamaniswarar temple also.

If that day is not possible, we may have to do it around 25th April Sunday.

All the best

hi folks,
some thoughts here...
1. trust god only...not god men
2 respect parents first...maata,pitaaa ,guru, daivam,,,,
3 ekalavya learned dhaurvidya without dronacharya (in real)
4,if at all guru required...follow aadi sankaracharya.sri ramanujacharya,
madhvachaarya, or sir vallabha charya...
5,try to learn self meditation....
6 for brahmins nitya sandhyavandanam with devotion...
7 social services leran from christian missionaries....
8 spirituality is core business for mathams or any ashrams....
9 engineering/medical college/super speciality hospitals are charitable
organisations of any ashrams management....the guru should not involve directly.....it should be accountable and transperency....
10 learn good work done by sri ramakrishna math/sri sivananda ashram....
11 away from political affiliation/or any celebacy...like cricketrs/cine actors....

just my 2 cents

regards'
tbs

Well saidTBS sir,

Excellent points to be followed by one and all.

If some section of the population believes God, let them do so.

If some other section doesn't believe, let them do so.

We don't require an intermediate between God and Us.

There is no proper regulation of these intermediate persons.

Invariable this intermediate person gets into some controversy or other.

Intermediate person also accumulates wealth and indulges in all sorts of illegal, immoral and unethical activities.

For a brahmin boy, the person who first teaches Gayatri Mantra during Upanayanam function is his Guru. It need not be father. Personally my eldest brother-in-law did Brahmobadesam for me. My elder brother did brahmobadesam for my second son.

The boy is suppose to seek truth himself after the Brahmobadesam function.

Upanayanam is not restricted to brahmins alone. Several other communities wear Poonal.

So a girl, husband is suppose to be equivalent to God கணவனே கண்கண்ட தெய்வம்

Let us avoid middle men and seek God directly.

All the best

Dear all,

We can't see air isnt it?
But we can feel it..and breathe it and it sustains us...
Same with Divinity...whoever the giver is..be it an uneducated person,a guru and avatar or even an animal.

I learnt a lot from my dog when I was small...
He used to have really good qualities...
He would join each Bhajan we had and insist on having the Suji Halwa and Kheer arpana before it was placed on the altar..otherwise he would not allow us to start the Bhajan..so he always ate first even before it was served at the altar..

Where we stayed there used to be lots of monkeys from the nearby jungle and my dog would divide his food with his paw and give equal share to the monkeys and to some other jungle dogs..
he would only eat after others have finished...
he used to love all Sathya Sai Bhajans and love to lie below Sathya Sai Baba's photo in our hall...

Sometimes I really wonder if we humans are really the more intelligent ones...

Great Sages

Dear Learned Members :

Thanks for sharing some good articles..

Can I request others to share some more valuable information about other Gurus who have adorned the "Kanchi Kamakoti Peeta". It is likely most of us have heard only about Maha Periyaval & his suceessors, apart from Shri Adi Shankara & Podhendra Sadhguru [thro Bhajan Sampradaya].
On going thro the large list of Madapathis who have served the Guru Parampara for around 2000 years, felt we should use this forum to update/gather some more information about our other Gurus.:help:

Thanks ..

Dear all,

For an incarnation of divinity...He does not need to "clear" His name when He is blamed...or accused of anything..

Om Thulya Nindhaathma Samsthuthaye Namah..
Salutations to Him who views praise and blame as the same...

Even Lord Buddha advocated the same...
Its just like a letter addressed to us..if we don't accept the letter of blame to us...what happens? simple..Return to sender...

You are true Dr. Renuka ji,

I believe in the same way....

As a common man I always believe that ignoring the bad/wrong people is the best way to live in peace and is the right way to ridicule the actions of filthy guys.

No doubt that an Incarnation of Divinity would not be bothered by any unnecessary disturbances.

It reminds me of the below three monkeys...

Don't See bad; don't Hear bad; don’t Speak bad

There have been books written from days of yore like Sri.Sadhasivabrahmendral who wrote Punya sloka manjari about Kamakoti peetadhipatis upto his time.An addendum was made to it by a later Acharya. In recent times Pulavar Mahadevan has written some tamil books covering a brief history of them

For being a saint and guru, it is essential that a guru should provide guidance to a spiritual sadaka rather than doing social service. It is not necessary that a saint should involve himself in social service. It is not the criterion at all. Sri Adishankiara, after founding the four monasteries in four cardinal centres of India, authored Mathamnaya Sasana, in which he enjoined on these gurus to follow certain tenets to uphold Dharma and in it is not included social service. It may be argued that Sankara's time is different from the present time. But with passage of time, the principal tenets and values can not change. It does not mean that gurus should not do social service, but it is to be emphasised that this is not the criterion for being a guru and saint.

A foreigner posed the question to Jagadguru Sri Sachidananda Sivabhinava Narasimha Bharathy Mahaswamigal of Sringeri, that how he could call himself Jagadguru while there are various people following different principles and even opposed to Hindu sanathana dharma; further there were people within Hindus themselves having faith other than Advaitha. Swamiji replied that 'Jagadguru' did not mean guru of globe; it meant that a spiritual sadaka wherever he resided in globe and if he sought his guidance he was bound to guide him suitable for his mental and spiritual mettle irrespective of caste or creed. A person might reside in Paris and seek his guidance whereas a person living near him may not do so; for the former he is guru and otherwise for the latter. In fact many foreigners have approached him foro guidance which he readily rendered.

Swami Tattavanishtha Saraswathi

Swami Tattavanishtha Saraswathi is a qualified Dental Surgeon with MDS qualification.

He is aged around 38 years now and he was running a dental clinic and was having excellent practice.

About ten years back, he quit the profession and joined Swami Dayanandha Saraswathi in his spiritual pursuit.

He mastered all the Upanisheds and is suppose to be an expert in Kenopanished.

Under instructions of his Guru Swami Dayananda Saraswathi, he undertook rural development, education and health sectors for the poor and down trodden sections of the society.

He has created a school in a tsunami affected area where mostly fishermen community people are living.

Vidyanidhi Trust

He is running the school with mostly donations from the general public. He teaches upanisheds globally and the entire revenues from such programs are donated to this school.

He is running a medical center also in the school premises catering to the local population free of cost.

He has not even published his photo or name in the website created for the trust.

He is very simple and fully devoted to social service.

This morning I met him at the school and took a photo along with him. I shall display the photo once it is forwarded to me.
