Sri Rangasamy Elango, a dynamic Gandhian belonging to Dalith Community has transformed a village `Kuthambakkam'

The South Asian: Elango's Kuthambakkam: A Model Village

The importance of Rangaswamy Elango

Last week I met Sri Elango and had a detailed discussion about transforming our villages.

Now he has given up Panchayat President of Kuthambakkam village and has formed a training academy for village panchatyat people in his village. He wants to transform 1000 villages in the next ten years.

He doesn't belong to any political party and firm believer in Gandhian Economic Principles

Personally I have assured him full support to his cause and also mobilize resources to the best possible extent.

All the best

To Sri RVR ji, Gandhian economics is the only suitable economic policy for India but the Nehru and BRA combination ruined our Indian economy. Todays Price Hicks and Black Market, Online trading all because of Nehru's foolish policy. s.r.k.

esarkey,

i do not know what ambedkar did to ruin the economy. poor man, i think he had his hands full, architecting the constitution and concerning himself with the upliftment of the dalits.

to the best of my knowledge ambedkar did not dabble in economics or running of the state.

re nehru, i agree, with his socialist policies, and permit-licence-quota raj, he enabled a few in the congress party to make money. the rest, he distributed poverty. wealth creation was an unknown enigma to him.

re gandhian economics today: in this age of cell phones, cheap mobility and internet, all this, i think, would have to be incorporated into any society, urban or rural.

today i read that with the urban areas getting saturated, the next thrust of the cell phone companies will be in the villages. these might not have electricity, running water or flush toilets - but all of them will soon have cell phones. good things will come out of this, bypassing the creaky effort of the government.

there was an ad in one of the chennai based web magazines. this was an article about the popularity of 'villas' - apparently the new construction fad. these are gated communities - no high rises, but self sufficient with hospital, school, play ground, shops, temples etc. so that the folks within the community have no need to go out.

the best selling point was that this was monitored by 24 hour security and hence the denizens felt safe. this man, who built one of these communities was praising this to be a 'gandhian village' in a modern environment.

so, gandhi has not worked in vain, after all. :)

To Kunjuppu sir, BRA is the master mind to Nehru (Nehru was once full faith in Gandhis Micro economice based on village level Agri based production, Process, etc) to gave wrong directions since BRA was not accept Gandhi as a leader so Nehru went for Big industry etc., to days all misleadings because of BRA was the LAW Minister. To day UK addapt a new Laws. But Indians useing the outdated law.s.r.k.

Gandhian economics is valid even today inspite of all modernisation.

It is a simple economics where the total export from the village should not be less than the total imports to the village.

Sri Elango was adopting this technique covering not only his village but a cluster of twenty surrounding villlages.

Before he ventured out, people were selling paddy and buying rice, selling milk and buying butter and gee.

Sri Elango introduced appropriate automations using low cost technologies and ensured that more value added products were sold from the village.

In the same way, he ensured that the total imports was always less than the total exports out of these cluster of villages.

Prosperity started flowing to the villages immediately.

He straightaway ensured approx 90% employment within the villages itself by engaging them on producing value added products.

Being a Gandhian, he ensured that liquor was avoided through social awareness.

The unemployed youth were attracted to Cinema fans clubs earlier. With the productive employment, they started avoiding cinema and fans clubs also.

Cinema and Liquor are the enemies of poor and downtrodden people particularly belonging to the so called low castes.

He didn't avoid modern technology and at the same time used appropriate technologies to suit local conditions.

With the economic prosperity, the caste conflicts vanished and people started looking to welfare measures.

Since he is honest, capable and efficient, whatever money flowing from state and central governments to the villages were utilized productively.

In simple terms, he ensured that development agenda as the goal and carried all communities along with him.

He had offers from political parties with lucrative posts but he refused all of them and decided to replicate the model in other villages. Now his target is to develop one thousand villages within the next ten years.

I spoke to him about my native village and he readily agreed to help me. I have also promised to mobilize maximum resources at my command for all the villages which he is going to target.

He is a man of action and I have decided to follow him in his goals.

All the best

srk,

if you read nehru's glimpses of world history, he has admiringly written about the soviet union and its then emerging state owned heavy industries. 'temples of the future', i think he termed it.

it has been a long time since i read this or any of nehru's works. apart from the stunningly magnificient english prose, his observations, much as i did not go for them, found them very candid and a clear picture as to what he wanted a future india to be. the five year plans are a ditto copy of the soviet five year plans.

ambedkar, again gave us a modern constitution and enshrined many rights which took centuries for other genders or groups to achieve in their own countries eg. women franchise

simple life, high thinking, was emulated by gandhi ji.there is not a single leader of his class,an rare enigma in indian political scene,a maha athma.

Kunjuppu Ji,

Nehru didn't follow Gandhian principles after independence. Mahatma Gandhi withdrew from the seen after independence and didn't live to see the developments of the country.

If panchayatraj as envisioned by Mahatma Gandhi was adopted after independence, villages would have developed much better. Self sufficiency of the villages with continuous modernization would have definitely achieved inclusive development.

Today we are seeing vast developments in the cities but villages are left high and dry. Coca Cola and Pepsi are available in villages but there is no protected drinking water. Cell phones are available but there is no hygienic toilets. Cable TV and satelite TV are available but there are no proper roads.

More than sixty years after independence we are seeing all these things in a fairly developed state like Tamilnadu. It is difficult to imagine a similar village in UP or Bihar or some other backward state.

Dalits and Tribals are adopting Naxalism and Maoism because of the lopsided policies of the Central and State Governments.

Nehruvian socialism has developed licence/control raj with highest levels of corruption. It lead the country to bankrupcy 1990. Centralised planning created this situation. If we adopted panchayat raj with maximum decentralisation, the country would have prospered much better.

Subsequent liberalisation created lot of problems for rural economy. Agriculturists were committing suicide due to debt problems.

Even today, the naxalite/maoist problems are the result of our bad policies of the past.

After seeing Koothambakkam and Sri Elango, I am able to see what wonders we would have achieved if we have adopted Gandhian Economic policies right from day one.

All the best

rvr,

'what if' are the saddest words in the english language.

with a little more insight, with a little more active adoption of periyar's call for small families, women's education and funding for the farmers, we could have gone a long way to stabilize our population and brought prosperity.

a country need not industrialize to prosper. canada, new zealand, argentina are agricultural based countries - even though with a small populations.

china's model is strange. ram rod industrialization, though i think the government there too is having second thoughts about the ram rodding part, and giving workers more rights and share of the prosperity.

we cannot have a prosperous and thriving cities wihtout equal development in the hinterland.

Gandhian economy is glorification of poverty in the guise of simple life style. I think Sarojini Naidu made a comment To keep Gandhi poor millions are spent Jambu:mad2:

Dr Jambu Sir,

It is not about life style. It is about managing the resources internally.

Main objective is to make the villages self sufficient in several aspects.

In simple terms the total value of items sold out of villages has to exceed total value of items bought by the village.

The surplus thus created improves the standard of living in the villages.

As I said in my first posting, villagers were selling paddy and buying rice & its by products. After the implementation of Gandhian economic principles, villagers were selling rice flowers and other value added products which brought more revenue for the same products. The value addition also created more employment in the villages. They were not using outdated techniques for creating value added products but adopted appropriate modern technologies.

We are able to see today countries having similar problems. Any country whose exports and other realisation of foreign exchange is less than the total imports will face similar problems.

If the village clusters start adopting the principle, villages will prosper automatically. Lifestyles in villages will improve automatically.

Whatever our Planning Commission and other bodies doing at all India level is being done at local level which is a great idea to be appreciated.

I don't agree with your view that Gandhian economics means distribution of poverty

All the best

To Dr Jambunathan sir, Gandhian economics means Progress, prospective, self sufficient, and never give Poverty to any one, only Nehru economic was given more poverty and unemployment, blackmarketing, blackmoney etc.We fail to adopt Gandhiji vision of Modern India. s.r.k.
