Are queues not an Indian custom?

Not open for further replies.
The one place in India, you have to maintain the queue is on all AksharDams. The Swaminarayan temple they police it, and sometimes brutally.

Akshardam temple is almost next door to my residence in delhi

Mostly Tourists go there.

It has been built on yamuna bed flouting all environmental rules.

The one in gujarat I happened to go once.

The special marble stone on walkways there do not seem to absorb heat.

I believe they have been specially got from some foreign country.

I do not like to go to crowded temples with restrictions and peculiar dress codes .Whether the bare bodies for males in some temples or mile long queues in tirupathi

with various gradation and prices for ticket darshan seem commercial.Akshardam - has also its dos and donts.

When one goes to these places, one feels best after returning safely with limbs intact and mind less polluted than before.

I read an article where the last person standing in the queue wll be served first decreases the average waiting time!
(what will be the strategies adopted to defeat this scheme)
Serving the last person to arrive in the queue could surprisingly cut waiting times, shows new research.
http://sciencenordic.com/queues-move-faster-if-last-person-served-first
A very thought provoking article.

Most of the domestic airlines in india like indigo keep increasing the counters for check in depending on overcrowding of multiple take off time of aircraft. One stands in

a long queue with less counters and get moved in bunches to new counters when they open . In fact those who come very late almost at boarding time get cleared

the fastest as special counters cater to these when the flight time nears. For minimal wait time it is best to go as late as possible with minimum risk.I see a lot of

wisdom in going late these days and I have never missed a flight.

Similarly now everyone has joined the price war with last minute low fares. For diwali 31st oct and 1st nov all fares were rock bottom [less than 50% of normal] in all

airlines to take on airindia which first started the last minute spot low fares.Normally lower fares are offered with atleast 15 days advance.

Though different queues exist in Tirumala Balaji temple, people are caged in between, just like cattle!

My nephew whom I escorted (?!) had to keep both his arms around me, to protect from the mad thrusts, inside the cages.
About five queues will ultimately emerge into one, near the sanctum sanctorum and we are sure to get 'chutnifyed'!!
:fear:

It is almost inhuman.
I promised myself that I will not visit any famous and popular Temples.

Do you realise in tirupathi queue, once you go past the darshan point in front of the vigraha, going out by the same people is made simple with no crowding or jostling.?

This queue mess is man made . It is clearly known how many can be comfortably accomodated in a time span. The numbers can be easily regulated at the

lower tirupathi itself as buses in which most go are run mostly by the local bus authorities up the hills. They hide behind religion for not widening the inner

sanctorum of the temple to make possible for more people to have a darshan . Putting up cages and treating people like cattle shows the respect these fellows have for

people.

But vaishnavites [I claim to be one ] have an extreme zeal and bear the man made hardship to go on critical festival days.I have been drawn into this by the fanatical

half of my family who are determined that my soul should go to heaven straight after my earthly body is crushed in the queue there.Last time I quietly skillfully

diverted

and said go to uppiliappan koil in kumbakonam considered to be elder brother of tirupathi venkateswara. One issue was that the prasadams there is without salt.Another

is mosquito menace in the city.

Dear Krish Sir,

When the number of visitors to a shrine is umpteen times more than the visitors that space can hold, there is no way to manage the crowd! :(

For those who believe all Gods are same, there is a beautiful temple in T' Nagar in Sing. Chennai itself and bhakthAs need not travel all the way

to Kumbakonam to get bitten by the special sized mosquitoes! :D

I have a reason for going there . My LTC destination is that as it is my declared hometown.

So this deivam gets classified as kula deivam.

I claim special rights to go to that temple.

For performing marriages, there are good halls with excellent facilities near the temple where one can have marriage at quarter the cost in chennai or any large metro. Even if

train or air fares are added , still it is good deal.

Many claim that they have a promise to God to marry there {I do not know they considered economics before that] . Thats what they tell the prospective grooms

family to

avoid expensive wedding in chennai

Something gets passed down from last generation.

When I had to declare a home town, there was no sense in declaring delhi where I worked.

So gave my parents place .

It ensured that at least once in 4 years I go there.

Similarly, When someone looked for a place for marriage,I facilitated by suggesting one of the few tamilnadu towns I was familiar with.

I am better than a TB in delhi who chose kashmir a couple of decades back for upanayanam of son.

Sensing economy in anything is not atall a bad idea, Krish ji. It is always wise to save for a better tomorrow. I understand Tirupathi as town you are referring to in your posts. But I have doubts whether that is less expensive compared to other places like Chennai? Can please throw some more light?

I was referring to kumbakonam ,my ancestral place was a village nearby .

Most vaishnavites choose between kumbakonam and srirangam as alternate to tirupathi.

Once there was an issue that a marriage in my family had to be shifted from kumbakonam on accouint of mahamaham and one political personality was planning to visit

there . There was police advise not to have it there.Sometimes politicians can upset economical calculations.

In terms of economics, food cooked by caterars with provision being supplied is far cheaper in smaller towns.

Even otherwise , a breakfast in a decent brahmin hotel would be one third of that in chennai woodlands.

The kalyana halls of andavan ashramam with huge hall with a dozen rooms both AC and non AC next to uppiliappan temple costs just in tens of thousands and private

hotel nearby next door has three floors of AC double rooms and suites with lifr and inverter costing just thousand plus per day.

After marriage , if necessary one can have reception only in a metro like chennai or delhi which is sensible

Kumbakonam is OK. Some how I got it as tirupati. Kumbakonam is a nice place and I love the veg food served in restaurants there. It is also one of my choice for post retirement life along with Trichi or Coimbatore.

hi

KUMBALONAM LOOKLIKE MORE CONSERVATIVE.....BUT COIMBATORE IS MORE LIBERAL...LOL

Easy way to maintain law and order is to shut down! We were stopped at Ramanathapuram and could not proceed to Rameswaram when former President Prathiba Patel was there between 12 and 2 PM though she was going there by Helicopter! Our friend from London was to Perform the Shardham of his father there and finally We took a different direction to Sethu Karai where it was done The temple priest presided over the ceremony in the absence of regular priests who do these cerimonies in Rameswaram!

On Sunday 30 Oct.after Deepavali My Sons and their family wanted to go to Rameswaram and were advised not to venture It was Devars Guru Puja at Pasumpon which is always Law and order Problem for the police to tackle - along all roads leading to that place So they had to changed their destination to Trichy Srirangam Jambukeswaram! in the opposite direction!

Have you been to Thirukkadaiyur (Nagapattinam District)Abirami temple for marriages...You will get a good place to stay if you get in touch with the Kovil Gurukkal..Many 60th and 80th Birthday celebrations are held there..Supposed to be very auspicious

TBS garu
Places like kumbakonam or srirangam are OK for one or two days stay for religeous tourism or for arranging marriages.

Unless one is a orthodox vaishnavite or muslim[ most land near temples are bought by minority community with remittances from abroad] ,it is not worth settling there.

If we are used to a metro lifestyle of delhi or chennai with its conveniences, we would be very uncomfortable in such towns.

Coimbotore is of course a better option because of the weather and proximity to hills. Most NRIs prefer to settle there after retirement . Or the parents settle there with

foreign based childrens support. But it is an expensive place . Also again , the minority issue crops up periodically. One has to choose the proper locality there for stay

Proximity to palghat is a plus if you are an iyer or have malayali roots

Coimbatore is facing water shortage and our friends settled in senior resorts there have started paying for water also! :(

Only place where you do not pay for water if used sparingly within limits set by govt,

Even electricty is at half rate within limits due to subsidy.

So stay put in delhi in own flat

Best option

Ram's cousin celebrated his 70th birthday there.

The food served at night, in a hall, was full of tiny insects resembling mustard seeds, dropping from the tube-lights! :yuck:
Dogs were roaming around during lunch time and some were smart enough to snatch appalams from the basket! :fear:

I was surviving only fruits and did not dare to have any food during my stay there. Probably, those who are served food

in the houses of sAsthrigaLs get nice, tasty and good food! :)

Is it a vaishnavite place?

If it is shaivite , I shall look for an iyer bride for my extended family also next.lol

They appear to be more in number.

They do not seem to be minding vaishnavites.

They like srichurnam on forehead a la Andal it appears.

I am still on the prowl for more additions to my family.

Kumbakonam is known for kosu and aanaikaal.Very polluted place.

Religeous places do not score high on hygeine.

:nono:, Krish Sir! Lord Shiva killed Yama to save Markandeya from him.

So, Thirukkadaiyur (aka Thirukkadavur) is famous ONLY for the celebrations by seniors and super seniors hitting 60, 70 and 80!!

I have no seniors in sixties and more looking for marriage.

They appear to be shy once bitten.

One distant one remarried after losing his wife .

His family did not forgive him for that.

In fact they refused to have anything to do with him though he had brought up his siblings and his only daughter had got married and had children in twenties.

No one wanted to keep him but did not want him to marry though as he was well off with property and was finacially sound for remarriage.

His second wife , a single lady married him for companionship. The marriage lasted twenty years and he died sometime back.

No second innings in that temple, Krish Sir! The same couple have to marry again and again!
