It was not a fully back-handed compliment. There is, in India today, a full-fledged "adoption mafia" and so people who are supposed to be doing great social service by being associated with orphanages may be the visible end of this mafia. Unless we know therefore more about this couple's involvement with the orphanages and the adoption market, one cannot be so sure.

Secondly, I felt that our great followers of sanatana dharma will (can only) be motivated into some useful social improvement only if they are convinced that they are doing so for upholding and strengthening sanatana dharma.
