MS Dhoni recently retired from international cricket after a stellar career for Team India. In an international career lasting more than 15 years, Dhoni became one of the most accomplished cricketer in the history of cricket. He fulfilled the wishes of millions of Indian fans by leading India to victory at 2007 World T20 and 2011 World Cup whiel also winning the Champions Trophy in 2013. In fact, he is the only captain in history win all three ICC tournaments.Cricket fan all around the world adore Dhoni due to his immaculate skills on the cricket field.

Such has become the legend of Dhoni become that the legendary Sunil Gavaskar feels his popularity in India has exceeded the level of fandom even the great Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli enjoy in the cricket-crazy nation.

Have to disagree as usual 😀

No offence to Dhoni or any cricketer. But he is more a social media phenomenon. His captaincy and career conincided with the normals rise in social media usage by Indians specifically the last 10 to 12 yrs. Hence he is seen as more popular compared to his predecessors.

But social media is also a platform for mediocrity and herd mentality. If someone drums up propaganda about someone or something, everyone else joins in the wave..

Dhoni unfortunately coming from a small town was not groomed to be a classical batsman or wicket keeper. unlike a Rahul Dravid who was a class to watch. Dhonis shots were anything but classical, it is all over the place with hardly any technique.

So the next gen cricketers are learning all the wrong lessons not just in cricket but also in other areas like mass spread of hatred, trolling, bullying, etc..

Hence his popularity must be looked at from a rise in social media phenomenon.
