Supreme Court junks medical entrance test rigged by hi-tech cheats

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Monday cancelled this year's All India Pre-Medical and Pre-Dental Entrance Test (AIPMT), finding it rigged by tech-savvy students who cheated in the examination by getting answers to questions through electronic devices they smuggled into test centres across the country. The court directed CBSE to hold the test afresh within four weeks.

AIPMT is the gateway for admission to 15% of seats in all central government medical colleges and participating state government medical colleges.

Over 6.3 lakh students had on May 3 taken the entrance examination, competing for 3,000-odd MBBS and BDS seats in top medical colleges.

......................

"If such an examination is saved, merit would be a casualty, generating a sense of frustration in genuine students, with aversion to the concept of examination. The possibility of leaning towards unfair means may also be the ultimate fallout. Even if one undeserving candidate, a beneficiary of such illegal machination, though undetected, is retained in the process, it would be in denial of the claim of more deserving candidates," a bench of Justices R K Agrawal and Amitava Roy said.

"The examination stands denuded of its sanctity as it is not possible to be cleansed of all the participating beneficiary candidates with certainty. We are thus, on an overall assessment of the materials on record, left un-persuaded to sustain the examination," said Justice Roy, who authored the judgment for the bench.

Cheating in exams has become hi tech...Looks like there will X Rays of all students before exams...I remember in the 80's even calculators were not allowed...Now we have reached a stage where even body clothing can become suspect!

Well said Ganesh Ji,

In those days, if a student is caught for such malpractice, everyone associated with him, right from parents and teachers have felt the stigma. But, nowadays, the race for top ranking seems to have pushed the ethics to the back seat.

It is important to score more mark and more important is through merit. It is unfortunate that a section of students have now developed an attitude to accomplish such task of top scoring, either by hook or crook.

Cheers.:)
