The sanctity of our religious heritage has not been fully understood by our own people. Is it not time to educate them about what they should care for, with pride of possession?

With unfailing regularity one is greeted by reports in our morning dailies that ‘Panchaloha' idol thieves were nabbed by our alert police force. One cannot miss the irony in the fact that after nearly a century of such plunder, there are still unguarded idols for the take! Idols meant for worship have been the exclusive preserve of temples in South India, particularly Tamil Nadu, since the seventh century.
The Hindu : Arts / History & Culture : Who will guard the gods?

yes. it is really painful to see such theft are recurring. Many of the these cases are not even reported and only when some persons are caught, it reaches the newspapers. Even the lands owned by the temples were/are usurped and lot of temples are not even able to conduct pooja as per customs. There was an editorial by dailythanthi(of all newspapers) about the state of affairs in Temples of Tamil nadu.

I wish I could read Tamil, the google translation does not do justice.
Please can you post the English translation.

sorry for the delayed response shri prasad.

the translation is not exact verbatim but covers the substance of the editorial.

//It is well known fact that People of Tamil Nadu are very religious. There are lot of temples both big and small in Tamil Nadu. Our ancestors used to treat temple as their own home ensuring all types of assistance in the daily rituals and they parted with some of their property towards the same. But, their well intended nobility of giving away their own lands towards temple maintenance and daily rituals is being grossly misused nowadays in most of the temples.

The properties of lot of temples are under illegal occupation by vested interests. Even the rent due to be paid on the properties are not paid by the tenants with no follow up action by the authorities. There are totally 38,481 (temples, mutt included) under the HR&CE Department of Tamil Nadu. These temples and Mutts own property worth 4,78,462 acres of lands, 22,599 buildings and 33627 plots. All of them have been given for rent/tenancy only.

However, the Temples are not receiving rent and other dues at all from the above properties . The amount due to the received by the temples are mind boggling. The great irony is that the even the rent fixed for the occupation is so meagre that it is as good as giving the property for free.

Arulimigu Kapaleeswarar temple admn has taken a good initiative in this regard. They have displayed the list of defaulters along with the amounts in a Board in temple premises. This has created the awareness among the temple going devotees. And this initiative should be followed in other temples also. Every temple should display visibly the list of defaulters, amount due to be paid in their premises. The HR & CE department should take proactive measures to fix the reasonable rent/ tenancy fee on the properties.

Those who saw the board displaying the dues to the temple are furious and they are vocal in standing by the HR & CE in their actions to collect the due payments.

We are aware about the properties of temples under HR & CE. But, the properties of village temples are unaccounted for and many are unscrupulously enjoying them without paying any charges to the temples. Action should be initiated in this also to ensure that proper enumeration of the properties and collection of rent.

The devotees fervently hope that our Chief Minister being a pious and religious person will certainly direct necessary action in this regard and the Commissioner of HR & CE will also follow up on the directions of the Chief Minister. No one should take lightly the properties owned by the Temples and accountability should be ensured.//

A far cry. Or I would say it is like talking on from moon's surface. I doubt JJ would fight the case as her followers, most of them, were one with the DMK. Fortune favours the seeker perhaps. Either you give them in EMI as charity or they take themselves outright. The law enforcers or the courts have backlogs to overlap kaliyug.

My wife's family has been involved with Padi temple, once dilapidated structure is humming with activity and all the tenets are paying rents on time. It was a private initiative, with tacit support from government.

who will guard the Gods?

Dear all,
We are all the sons and daughters of God. As far as God is concerned, the whole world is his family. So, a theif also belongs to the same family. Therefore, it hardly matters to God as to who is the possessor of the property. In fact, God is nobody's property including the Governments of people or people themselves. No doubt, thief should be punished by God and he does it at the appropriate time. The appropriate time may be in the same birth or after several births. Of course, this does not justify thieving of the idol of God. As and when caught, person(s) are punished. In some cases, the punishment is given immediately and in some cases it is badly delated like justice in our Courts. Another point of view is that the people can enjoy the possession during one's lifetime only. Therefore, as far as God is concerned, the property remains within his family. So, in my opinion, God/idols of God(s) need not be guarded as everything in this world is happening according to the will of God.rajaji48

I read once before that in Shani Shingapur in Maharasthra which is famous for a Shani Bhagawan temple(with a Syavambhu idol)....no house/shops/post office has doors or latches and no theft occurs in this place cos there is a fear that anyone attempting any unlawful act will be punished by Shani Bhagawan immediately and no one dare steal a Shani Bhagawan idol too.

So I guess "fear" of bad luck can prevent thefts of idols.

what if the thief is an atheist?

Where have you been all this while Ozone dear??
There used to be a theory that Theist are the so called "immoral" ones who do all stuff and then pray to God to forgive them..so dont worry dear..an Atheist is sure he will not steal!!!LOL

Note:
I intend this as a joke and do not want this to escalate into an all out war of Theist and Atheist and if the moderator feels that this post of mine has potential for that to happen...I dont mind it being deleted.

The belief that "God" is in the idols installed in the garbhagrihams of temples, is one of the greatest tricks played by brahmins and Rajas of olden days. I don't know what their purpose was but I clearly remember my great grandfather being very unwilling to go to temple or even for the "utsavam".

I am told that Namboodiri men in Kerala used to visit temple, prostrate on the special "mandapam" before the sanctum, specially reserved only for brahmins in the olden days, and then, touching the floor with the left ring finger they used to recite the "moolamantram" for the main deity certain fixed number of times (108, 1008, etc.) and then again do namaskaram and come out of the temple; their belief was that a true brahmanan has to augment the "chaitanyam" of the moorthi in the temple by reciting the moolamantram.

But today such practices have completely disappeared. But the truth is that what we find in our temples is only an idol and nothing more.

The following Siddhar pADals will be instructive in this regard. (In the thread " chitrAnnam: kalanda-sAdam" one person is giving a one-sided view of Siddhars' views, favourable to the half-baked brahmins who frequent this site; Siddhars were critical of brahmins, vedas, etc.)

Is there any other authority apart from your great grandfather that temples are foisted on innocent people by brahmins and kshatiyas? You are insulting the intelligence and devotion of temple going public.

Idol is a derogatory term used by christians and muslims for the hindu gods, and idol breaking is deemed as an essential activity of the abrahamic religions. The word used in dharma respecting circles is murthu or vigraha.

So there were some siddhars praising brahminical practices and the vedic philosophy and some expressed contrary opinions. There is nothing new in this. You must the vyakyanams too.

"(In the thread " chitrAnnam: kalanda-sAdam" one person is giving a one-sided view of Siddhars' views, favourable to the half-baked brahmins who frequent this site; Siddhars were critical of brahmins, vedas" - there is no need to defend the owner of this particular thread as he is well known and respected. But your statement is in bad taste.

What is your agenda? mismatch of inner and outer skins!

I have a basic problem, with the theory that public property can be stolen and claimed as personal property. This is a moral issue in our country. People do not feel guilty in aggrandizing public property, these people are thieves.

We don not take pride in preserving our national monuments (UNESCO has to save us), our wildlefe (again Unesco), public land (all the politician). We condone immoral behavior and then expect government or some other agency to protect us from ourselves.

Shri sarang sir,

Even at the risk of inviting the ire of the administrator/moderators, let me tell you frankly that you appear to me to be an ideal example of those whom I call "pseudo-" or "half-baked" brahmins. You have just the outer skin of brahmana (not even any inner skin of a NB, I feel, and so I cannot even accuse you of an agenda like what you have done towards me.).

(I humbly request the moderators to allow my post to stand for at least 24 hours so that all people can have a chance to read what I have written, before it is removed.)

There is a verse in SvEtASvatarOpanishad 4:19; I am copying and pasting but cannot correct:

So, the veda (upanishads are considered part and parcel of vedas) says, na tasya pratimA asti; there is no likeness of Him or That, whose name is of the greatest fame. Hence whatever funny and comical idols with even numbers of hands, any number of heads and various arms of destruction etc., we are now worshipping as our Gods, in the temples and homes, are not like that whose fame (yaSaH) is great (mahat) unless you have some authority which clearly says that Brahman really looks like these and more.

Some part of the above appears in Mahanarayanopanishad also, but the "na tasya pratimA asti" has been cleverly omitted.

If you are so narrow minded as to feel that the word idol (vigraham) itself is a derogatory term, I can only tell you that the word "abishEk" is also a vulgar word in one of the European tongues. Hence there can be no end or substance to such arguments.

AFAIK, siddhars did not endorse brahmanical practices. While some of them criticised brahmanas, vedas and all, some were silent.

And lastly, my agenda, if any, is to tell people here what it really means to be a brahmin, nothing more, nothing less.

Bagavadpada sri sankaracharya must take lessons from you. And what srikrishna says in gita how to worship him is a myth. And the bhashyams written by the three and many more acharyas have no relevance according to you. Good for you, carry on with your ignoble work. The living 'true brahmin' calling everybody else pseudo. This was the strategy adopted by other atheists in this forum to deride and insult the community, quoting in isolation.

There is a verse in SvEtASvatarOpanishad 4:19; I am copying and pasting but cannot correct:

dear sri sarma-61,
With all due respect to your age, knowledge, wisdom and your stand, I ask that you write about things that are realistic, practical and pleasant. Going to temples has been a tradition long withstanding and things have changed since those days.
What are you trying to achieve by merely creating turbulence here through unrelated references?
You appear to have some information, history etc., which I am keen to hear and benefit from. If only, you could package them nicely and leave out the trash, you could make a less formidable contributor.
peace ! and thanks

Shri ozone sir,

Thank you for your considerate treatment to me and suggestions for my improvement. The one thing that stands "out of tune" (apa Sruti, so to say) in your post is that you find some "trash" in my posts but have not given any example/s for that. You know that no one will usually like to write trash and earn a bad name and so I request you to kindly copy & paste the "trash" portions you find in my posts.

I agree that going to temples has been a custom which is very old and historians probably trace the origin of temples in India to the Gupta dynasty (320 to 550 A.D.). But it should be remembered that the vedic hinduism did not envisage any permanent structures for worship of the vedic gods; they built temporary structures even for the most elaborate vedic yAgas and burned everything down and took a holy dip called "avabhruta snAnam" (purification bath, literally); so, you see sir, the vedic priests thought that their worship of the gods through those yAgas, made them impure, in some ways!

It was the jaina religion which laid great emphasis on their temples. SrAvakas (the laity) were obliged to visit temple daily and worship their Jina idols.

Hinduism, subsequent to the decline of the vedic beliefs and practices (which are now labelled as pUrvamImAmsa), copied many things from Jainism because that stream of faith had, by then, attracted the moneyed class of vaisyas or traders. This will be borne out from the many epigraphic evidences which show the large donations from the traders to Jainism as also to Buddhist monuments. It therefore appears that the hindus who had clung to the vedic beliefs, slowly adapted themselves to the jain mores like vegetarianism, temples and other things.

Now, the funny thing is that the jains do not believe that even their 24 Jinas cannot interfere in the Karma of anyone and they go to their temples only to pay their obeisance to the revered Jinas and their subordinate gods and goddesses (all of whom are powerless in interfering with the way karma works itself out in each SrAvaka's or yati's life) and to gain good thinking and inspiration to face life; but hindus have turned the temples as abodes of their Gods, big and small, and hold that those gods will be able to help them (the devotees who pray to the idols) by supernatural miracles if necessary.

I was just trying to bring this anomalous belief into correct perspective, but like the medieval Christian Church holding on to its roughly thousand year belief that the earth is flat, the sun, moon and planets go around the earth and so on, you seem to insist that the hindu beliefs about temples being hoary, are inerrant.

That was why I alluded even to the Namboodiris' view that the power of the idol in the temples emanates from those who add power to it through the prescribed method of reciting the "moolamantra". Under the 'tantric' system followed by many Kearla temples, the power in the idol is only a part of what the 'Tantri' has implanted into it at the time of its consecration, and in this sense, the Godhead in the main idol is supposed to be the son, offspring, or like the projeny of the Tantri. (That is the reason why the Sabarimala Tantri gets into the media often.)

My intention is only to try tell people that we have a "markaTa muShTi" (monkey's clasp) on all our cherished beliefs, right or wrong, particularly the religious ones; but as regards our scientific views, we are more flexible and change readily when one set of beliefs gets overruled by a newer one. For example we will have no difficulty to believe that neutrino can travel faster than light and hence neutrinos can make an entirely different universe.

Hope you do not find some "trash" in this post also.

My wife's family has been involved with Padi temple, once dilapidated structure is humming with activity and all the tenets are paying rents on time. It was a private initiative, with tacit support from government.

great to know that.

The overall issue in TN is deep rooted and only and only if the Government is forced into some action, something fruitful may emerge.

I agree that you need government support, but initiative has to come from concerned citizens.

Theist or atheist, thief is a thief.
I agree. But you see there can be thiefs with some fear or with some Principles, like the one our dear Dr introduced to us in one other post.
The hope is the Theist wouldnt steal Gods or even in temples.
I wouldnt be surprised if some theives even pray to Lord Ganesha before starting their new venture, because they also believe in:

Thugs in ancient India used to pray to Goddess Kali before their killings.
Ozoneji, you are giving too much credit to these thieves. To be identified as theist ot atheist you got have philosophy, and some ethics.

Thieves stealing or dealing with stolen property have neither.
Like Iyyarooraanji said they are despicable thieves.
