Most gold medalists do, however, get some type of cash payment along with their medallion, but the amount of money depends on the athlete’s country.
The U.S. pays $25,000 per gold medal, $15,000 for the silver and $10,000 for the bronze. That might seem chintzy compared to what other countries pay, but the U.S. also tends to have more medal winners than many of the countries that pay higher amounts.
Here’s a look at estimates for what a few countries pay their gold-medal champions.
Singapore: $800,000
Kazakhstan: $250,00
Italy: $182,000
Russia: $135,000 — although some reports say the regional government of Chelyabinsk Oblast will pay a gold medalist $1 million.
China: $55,000, plus myriad prizes
France: $65,000
South Africa: $65,000
Mexico: $37,000
Canada: $20,00

Abhinav Bindra Sheds Light On Why India Isn't Winning Medals At Rio Olympics And Makes Absolute Sense.
Someone who knows the dynamics of Indian sports and what it means to rise through the ranks through the hostile bureaucratic walls of the federation.
The cost of one Olympic medal for the UK is 5.5 million Pounds - that is roughly Rs 48 crore per medal. So if India wanted 10 medals at Rio Games, it should ideally have invested at least Rs 480 crore on those medal winners.
The question Bindra indirectly wants us to ask all the authorities who run Olympic sports in India is do they invest that much of money on our athletes for the country to expect these many medals.Perhaps, India should take the example of Great Britain and learn from them how increased sports budget for Olympics have resulted in more medals.
Since the Beijing Games in 2008, Great Britain increased its funding to Olympic sports by a whopping 16 per cent. As a result, they've risen in the Olympic ranks from 34th spot at the Atlanta Games in 1996 to third spot at London Games in 2012 to already second place in Rio Games. It was earlier reported that US spends Rs 22 per day per athlete, Jamaica 19 paise per day per athlete and India just 3 paisa per athlete per day.

Naysayers will argue that it isn't fair to compare India with Britain's prowess as a sporting nation but what is evident is that if you have a target of medals to win at the Olympics, and can earmark a budget to achieve to that, it can work. It did so for Team Great Britain, it can for India too, provided the federations work towards that goal in sync with the athletes.

What A Shame That While Athletes Toil Away In Search Of Medals, Officials Party In Rio.
While Vijay Goel's selfies with athletes raised questions which forced him to fly back from Rio, it appears he is not the only one.

Raninder Singh, son of Congress’ chief ministerial candidate in Punjab, Amarinder Singh, and the National Rifle Association of India president is currently in Rio to cheer on the team. But what is he doing while our athletes are struggling to win medals? Partying, yes correct, partying.
Abhay Singh Chautala, son of former Haryana Chief Minister, OP Chautala joins him in the list. The man is out on bail after being probed in a disproportionate assets case. Even the judge is confused by the Rio trip as he did not take the necessary permission required.

Haryana's Sports Minister Anil Vij is also in Rio to support the 'Haryana Athletes'. But what are the members of his contingent doing? Chilling on the Rio beaches.

So not only do they forget the names of our athletes, they don'e even stand in their corner. We have no medals till now, but that does not mean an effort is not being put in. The conduct of the officials reflects just how much interest they have in how we fare at the Games.

It's a shame on us if we cannot stand by those looking to do India proud on the big stage.http://www.indiatimes.com/sports/ri...-of-medals-officials-party-in-rio-260106.html

Indian Hockey Teams Got Only Peanuts To Eat At Rio Embassy, Like Literally.

Imagine going for a function and skipping dinner as a result, but all you get are peanuts? No, no this is no joke, but after what happened to the Indian hockey teams at the Indian Embassy, well, they will feel the joke's on them.

They attended the Independence Day function, and of course canceled dinner at the Games Village as they expected to eat there. But surprise, surprise! All that they were served was some beer, snacks and peanuts. Yes peanuts! As a result they more or less had to leave with empty stomachs and it did not make them happy, needless to say.

“It was all about peanuts. We expected a dinner at least but what they served was beer and some soft drinks, and peanuts,” a member of the hockey team fumed.“We had cancelled our dinner at the Games Village and came all the way. It’s really disappointing,” he said as they were taken in two buses to the venue.

It was a low-key affair as the function clashed with many key events.

The invitation had come from the office of Rajiv Yadav secretary (sports) department of sports, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports Government India.
Pawandeep Singh Kohli, the Chief Medical Officer for the Indian contingent, was present at the reception and also confirmed that there was no proper food available.
Both the men's and women's hockey teams are out of the Olympics. India are yet to win a medal with just 4 days left in the Games. And this treatment meted out to them pretty much adds insult to injury.

They have plenty of money. They want to lavish money. And they are politicians after all. They have money for the purpose of partying only. Simple logic!!!!

Malaysia..we havent got our gold yet...banking on badminton single finals males between Lee Chong Wei of Msia and Lin Dan of China..

So far we have 2 silvers and 1 bronze..silvers from diving and the other mixed doubles badminton..bronze from cycling.

The winners of Gold would be given:

RM 1 million and RM 5,000 lifelong pension

Winners of Silver:

RM 300,000 and lifelong RM 3000 pension

Winners of Bronze:

RM 100,000 and lifelong RM 2000 pension.

Hoping for Lee Chong Wei to beat Lin Dan.

I am pretty sure Indians in India would prefer Lee Chong Wei to win cos Lin Dan beat Srikanth of India to reach finals.

So Srikanth could get at least a bronze in his upcoming 3rd placing match.
