As per the tradition and customs, the departed soul will take some time to get another body to undergo the karma chain of actions. Till then it needs food and water and for which the monthly and yearly rituals are performed by giving oblation to agni and feeding brahmins. By this the departed souls will be pleased and bless their family members. You may get more details from your family priest.
