Mitrotsavam

The deity mitra (aka mithras, surya) was worshipped especially on the winter solstice, the shortest and gloomiest day of the year, as the ancients had figured out that the sun would then start on its northward trek on that day: ie. uttarayanam begins, the auspicious time of year.

this is why many ancient monuments (eg. stonehenge) in europe are focused on the winter solstice.

thus the deity surya/mitra forms a continuous link between western europe and india.

however, christists annexed the winter-solstice festival of mitra and claimed their godman jesus was born on that day. there is no evidence that jesus existed, so his so-called birthday is a pure artifice.

strange, isn't it, that the 'aryan-invasion' hoax-worshippers of india do not tell the christists this little fact and demand that the so-called christmas should be celebrated as mitrotsava.

in fact, it is being celebrated in kerala. kerala, protected as it was from the mohammedan invasions by the bulwark of vijayanagar, is the place where the most ancient traditions have had a precarious foothold. for instance, the great vedic rituals --agnicayana -- of the fire sacrifice, with the altars n the shape of a falcon, have been held most recently in kerala (see frits staal, the vedic ritual of the fire altar, http://www.amazon.com/Agni-Vedic-ritual-fire-altar/dp/B0006EHTIQ ). however, once the communists were able to decimate the nambudiri brahmins, these rituals have vanished there too. but someone is still celebrating the millennia-old mitratsava.

happy mitrotsava to all!

Invitation:

'Surya Atma Jagathastatushascha
-Yajur Veda

(The Sun is the soul of all things in cosmos, moving and unmoving)

Mitrotsavam, the festival worshipping Mitra (Sun God), is being celebrated on the 25
th of December, 2008. Mitra or Surya is the giver of all, a ¡pratyaksha deivam¢.

Mitra is the provider of life itself, and of energy, light, and rains. Mitra is the bestower of all bounties on Earth and is worshipped as Savita by the most profound of mantras, the Gayatri mantra.

For thousands of years, Hindus have understood the power of worshipping the Sun. Worshipping Mitra helps to cure diseases, especially those related to the eyes, head, and heart. Surya worship also sharpens the memory and intellect, gives strength and energy, wards away enemies, and provides all round prosperity.

In Trikkur village, Thrissur district, Kerala, Mitrotsavam rituals will begin at 9.00 am with a Ganapati Puja, followed by Surya Narayana Puja, 128 Surya Namaskarams, Chanting of Rig Veda Soura mantras, Surya Tarpanam, Savitr homam, Archana and chanting of Surya-Shlokas. There will be a sangeeta saparya (musical programme) by children. This will be followed by prasadam. For more information, please contact Sri. T.P. Gopalakrishnan (email: kichannatkr@...).

With many prayers to Mitra to bless all of us with health and prosperity and bestow upon us the courage and dedication to protect Dharma.

Shri tbs

I thought TN Govt is celeberating on Jan 14?Wasn't Pongal also changed?

Winter Solstice as per astronomy is Dec21/22.

Full gol maal.

Dear Bala,

Winter solstice falls on Dec 21/22 on which the night is the longest in the year and it is mid-winter.

On January 14, the Sun reaches Aquarius (Makara Rasi) and it is the date on which
the Sun starts its journey northwards. It is rightly called 'Uttarayanam'. (Remember Bhishma's desire to die in Uttarayanam). Since it is considered change of fortune for the better, signalling fresh arrivals, it is auspicious too. It also happens to be the time of harvest and in this season, money circulation will be very good, especially in an agrarian economy. Thus came the proverb 'Thai Pirandhal Vazhi Pirakkum'. Generally, the entire country will be happy, having paid off the debts taken earlier and acquired fresh assets too. Since 'Margazhi' was reserved for divine activities, mundane activities that were suspended earlier will resume with newfound cheers in 'Thai'.

As per ancient Tamil grammar texts and literature, the Tamil year is divided into
6 parts and the first one is called 'Ila Venil' (Spring). This usually falls on April 14
(in leap year on April 13). Therefore, it is the new year for the Tamils. Since
Tamils adopt solar calendar, unlike Telugu, Kannada or Marathi who follow lunar calendar, no one has any right to initiate changes in this practice followed from time immemorial.

(It may be interesting to note that months in Tamil calendar are based on lunar movements and that's why a month is called 'Thingal' in Tamil. In Telugu also, a month is called 'nela' - derived from the Tamil word 'Nila')

I think there might be some other untold reason for the change proposed by Mu Ka. When MGR was alive, as his Birthday falls on Jan 17, this date was named as 'Thiruvalluvar Day' and a public holiday also declared. Who can prove that Thiruvalluvar was actually born on some other day? Similarly, Jan 14 could be Birth Day of some one from Mu Ka's family, who knows?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Winter_Solstice

Its a decent written article about Winter Solstice.Makaram is Capricorn.Makara Rasi is Capricorn Rasi.Sun entering Makaram. But there is another school of thoughts, which says, this Rasis, were all later development of Sanathana Dharma. In the original Vedic period, there were no Rasi delineations for the Sun viewed from bhu-loka.

It was purely a Lunar,Solar Calendar based on Nakshatras only. That is how our Panchangams were created. But as sanathana dharma progressed, many schools of thoughts got incorporated.

As per astronomy ie modern science ,IMHO,uttarayanam is winter solstice only.Uttarayanam -Northwards Ayanam

Rishi Gargya
refers to Ayana occurring in Maghaa during his time. Ayana refers to apparent direction of Sun's North-South motion. The day of direction reversal is called an Ayana day (Uttara and Dakshina Ayana). When Rishi Gargya refers to Ayana he is clearly referring to a Solstice day and that Ayana occurred when Sun is at Maghaa.

There is one gentleman A.K.Kaul,who is actually writing truth, but the way he is going about it,nobody will believe his presentation.Even our Rashtriya Panchangam,by Saha Comittee, has mentioned,we should reveiw this at a later stage,to present it Sanathana Dharma adherents world over.

sb

I admit my mistake. 'Makara Rasi' is 'Capricorn' only. Pongal is known as 'Makara Sankaranthi' in Sanskrit, even though no pujas are made or soical celebrations arranged,
in the northern India on this day.

Pongal is seasonal festival, which is celebrated by Tamils.Especially started by Kings for the farming community.Just like Durga Puja in WB for Navarathri celeberations.Since long time back only Kings/Queens ruled,so each had a calendar. Some followed the Chakravarthis Calendar who was King of all Kings in India and nearby lands upto Egypt..and so on...

sb

P.S. I think Makara Samnkranthi in Samskritam. Our ancients even had a 13 months in a years...

Adhyaya eight of Amsha two of Shri Vishnu Purana by Parashara Rishi is in fact just like geography lesson on the phenomenon of seasons. Verses 27 to 37, 42 to 47 and 65 to 81 of the same adhyaya should be eye openers.

Mesha Sankranti is another name of Spring Equinox, Karkata Sankranti is synonymous with Dakshinayana, Tula Sankranti nothing but Autumn equinox, and Makar Sankranti just another name of Uttarayana!

“The sun enters Makara on the day of Uttarayana which is the shortest day of the year. It goes on increasing during the sun’s transit of Kumbha and Mina. Days and nights are equal on Vishuva day, when the sun enters Mesha Rashi. After that the duration of the days gets longer than that of the nights and it becomes longest on the day of Dakshinayana when the sun enters Karkata Rashi. Vishuva, Spring Equinox, occurs in between the Sharad and Vasant Ritu and the days and nights are then (on Vishuva Day) equal---of thirty ghatis each. Any charities given during the ayana and vishuva (equinoctial and solstice) sankrantis yield thousand fold results. The Uttarayana months of Makara to Mithuna i.e. Makara, Kumbha, Mina, Mesha, Vrisha and Mithuna are also known respectively as Tapah, Tapasya, Madhu ,Madhava, Shukra and Shuchih whereas the Dakshinayana months of Karkata to Dhanu viz. Karkata, Simha,Kanya, Tula,
Vrishcika and Dhanu are also known as Nabah, Nabhasya, Isha,Urja, Saha and Sahasya respectively”.

Then verses 77 to 81 link Krittika nakshatra to Mesha Rashi and Vernal Equinox and Vishakha nakshatra to Tula Rashi and Autumn Equinox. It means the nakshatra division also was sayana, starting with krittika with vernal equinox
(Mesha Rashi) at the time of Bhagavata and Vishnu Purana.

Subject: Mithraism

Mithraism is a very old religion from the area of Kashmir and Iran, possibly of 6th/5th century at the earliest. As the name suggests,
it concerns itself with the worship of Sun god.

Isa, perhaps the only prophet of the religion, declares in Bhavishya purana about himself. While Isa does not talk of Mithraism there, he mentions that he worships sun, which connects him to Mithraism. Also, he declares that he was born of virgin and was a saviour, which are again important features in Mithraism.

Most of the characteristics of Mithraism were readily accepted by Christianity. Mithraism was highly popular for several centuries in Europe. By 2nd century bce, it was well entrenched there. It is said that if Christianity did not spread itself so much in the world, Mithraism would have in its place. However exaggerated this statement might be, it is not without its element of truth.

While it is said that there was no trace of Mithraism in South Asia , its supposed place of origin, there are several sun temples which either dilapidated or been appropiated by other religions later. For eg., Srinagar district boasts of the temple of Sankaracharya, which was later called Takht e Suleiman. It was originally a temple meant for sun worship. Kashmir also houses the tomb of Isa.

Bhavishya purana says that Isa has crossed Indus to preach the foreigners, who have persecuted him. Rauza Tus Safa written by Mir Mohammed Khwand , in support of this, states that Isa has gone to Nisibis where he was initially persecuted, only to be accepted later. He established several sun temples there.

Isa declares himself to be a saviour in bhavishya purana. Mithraism also stresses this aspect. There are coins attributed to him, circulated from Kashmir and Taxila (Gandhara or Afganistan) to Kabul, these being the traditional important centres on old silk road.

" Soter Megas" coins are the most important of these collections, attributed to Vima Taktoo. Thanks to this, it is easier now to place Vima Taktoo in 5th or 6th c. bce rather in post Christian era. Kanishka who had succeeded Vima Taktoo, organized the 4th Buddhist council , attended by Isa. Thus, the term Maitreya (Bodhisatva) was applied to Isa, since Maitreya means son of Mithra (Sun God)

That Kanishka belonged to 5th or 6th c, bce, was further supported by the fact that he had strengthened Gandhara and Alexander mentions this fact in his last official gazatte, that he could not proceed further because Gandhara is too powerful to be attacked. I would be posting seperately on this, by looking at the independent evidences that show that Kanishka belonged to pre christian era.

My 2 cents, that is the main reason Islamic Mughals who terrorised India for 800 years, went and destroyed monuments of hindu architecture as well as burnt our samskritam books wriiten in palm leaves, clay tablets and finally brahmins as they were carrying it thru memories in brain cells.
