There are a number of old cultural traditions that could do with a modern-day reality check; an “end-of-life review”, if you will. It’s hard to believe that in 2010, we still have cultures and in some cases, entire countries, who continue to practice their old traditions, regardless of how inhumane and cruel they may be.
From scandalous bull fighting and cock fighting, rhino horn and exotic fur “farming”, the African wedding ritual of the killing of the bull, to the downright barbaric as in the case of the annual bloody massacre of the Calderon Dolphins of Finland. How many of these traditional practices are absolutely necessary for human survival?
Yes, I know there are huge commercial markets that are also responsible for the annual slaughter of thousands of animals including seals, whales, elephants etc, it’s not all simply cultural tradition, but really, when is enough, enough?
And if cruel animal-killing traditions are not enough to repulse, then what about the human cruelty traditions that continue to pervade modern day society.
